    Abstract: The Balkans provided the escape route for tens of thousands of German Jews, and remained a place of refuge until the Nazis brutally shut it off with the mass murder of Jewish refugees on the so-called Kladovo transport starting in September 1941, which can be considered as the beginning of the Holocaust in Europe. Responding to publications about the Western European and American exile experience of the Jews after 1933, this book offers comparative insights into the less trodden paths of the persecuted, illuminating the cultural and political context of the Balkan host countries, the response of local Jewish communities, and the reactions of common people and assorted criminals. The Balkans, often marginalised and loathed, emerges in hundreds of personal accounts of survivors gathered here, supplemented by extensive archival research, as a welcoming getaway, where thousands survived thanks to the Italian occupiers, illiterate peasants, and Communist-led Partisan resisters

    Abstract: Although the Enlightenment had seemed to bring an end to the widely held belief that Jews murdered Christian children for ritual purposes, charges of the so-called blood libel were surprisingly widespread in central and eastern Europe on either side of the turn to the twentieth century. Well over one hundred accusations were made against Jews in this period, and prosecutors and government officials in Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia broke with long established precedent to bring six of these cases forward in sensational public trials. Kieval examines four cases-the prosecutions that took place at Tiszaeszlár in Hungary (1882-83), Xanten in Germany (1891-92), Polná in Austrian Bohemia (1899-1900), and Konitz, then Germany, now in Poland (1900-1902)-to consider the means by which discredited beliefs came to seem once again plausible.Kieval explores how educated elites took up the accusations of Jewish ritual murder and considers the roles played by government bureaucracies, the journalistic establishment, forensic medicine, and advanced legal practices in structuring the investigations and trials. The prosecutors, judges, forensic scientists, criminologists, and academic scholars of Judaism and other expert witnesses all worked hard to establish their epistemological authority as rationalists, Kieval contends. Far from being a throwback to the Middle Ages, these ritual murder trials were in all respects a product of post-Enlightenment politics and culture. Harnessed to and disciplined by the rhetoric of modernity, they were able to proceed precisely because they were framed by the idioms of scientific discourse and rationality

    Abstract: A close reading of postrevolutionary Russian and Yiddish literature and film recasts the Soviet Jew as a novel cultural figure: not just a minority but an ambivalent character navigating between the Jewish past and Bolshevik modernity. The Russian Revolution of 1917 transformed the Jewish community of the former tsarist empire. In particular, the Bolshevik government eliminated the requirement that most Jews reside in the Pale of Settlement in what had been Russia’s western borderlands. Many Jews quickly exited the shtetls, seeking prospects elsewhere. Some left for bigger cities, others for Europe, America, or Palestine. Thousands tried their luck in the newly established Jewish Autonomous Region in the Far East, where urban merchants would become tillers of the soil. For these Jews, Soviet modernity meant freedom, the possibility of the new, and the pressure to discard old ways of life. This ambivalence was embodied in the Soviet Jew—not just a descriptive demographic term but a novel cultural figure. In insightful readings of Yiddish and Russian literature, films, and reportage, Sasha Senderovich finds characters traversing space and history and carrying with them the dislodged practices and archetypes of a lost Jewish world. There is the Siberian settler of Viktor Fink’s Jews in the Taiga, the folkloric trickster of Isaac Babel, and the fragmented, bickering family of Moyshe Kulbak’s The Zemlenyaners, whose insular lives are disrupted by the march of technological, political, and social change. There is the collector of ethnographic tidbits, the pogrom survivor, the émigré who repatriates to the USSR. Senderovich urges us to see the Soviet Jew anew, as not only a minority but also a particular kind of liminal being. How the Soviet Jew Was Made emerges as a profound meditation on culture and identity in a shifting landscape

    Abstract: "Sara Levy nâee Itzig (1761-1854), a salonniáere, skilled performing musician, and active participant in enlightened Prussian Jewish society, played a powerful role in shaping the dynamic cultural world of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Berlin. A patron and collector of music, she studied harpsichord with Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-84) and commissioned musical compositions from both Friedemann and his brother Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-88). Archival evidence demonstrates Levy's position as an essential link in the transmission of the music of their father, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), and as a catalyst for the "Bach revival" of the early nineteenth century, which was led by her great-nephew Felix Mendelssohn. Sara Levy's World: Gender, Judaism, and the Bach Tradition in Enlightenment Berlin represents the first scholarly exploration of the cultural, political, and aesthetic contexts that shaped Levy's world. Statt dessen musste er Bettelbriefe schreiben und Mäzene suchen, wegen seiner Sucht nach Luxus, aber auch, weil das frühe 19. Wagner gelang es, um sich und sein Schaffen einen Mythos zu kreieren, der ihm neue finanzielle - und künstlerische - Möglichkeiten eröffnete. Zu diesem Mythos gehörte, dass Richard Wagner als deutscher Künstler von der jüdischen Presse ungerecht behandelt, von dem jüdischen Komponisten Meyerbeer getäuscht und von dem jüdischen Musikverleger Schlesinger ausgebeutet werde - faustdicke Lügen, wie Ulrich Drüner aus den Quellen zeigt. So wie Luxus, Seide und Parfüms, weibliche Zuneigung, tiefe Freundschaften (Nietzsche, Liszt) brauchte Wagner zum Komponieren sehr lange diesen antisemitischen Impuls. Zu seiner Selbstinszenierung gehörte auch das Rezitieren und Deklamieren seiner Dichtung im engsten Kreise, woraus er die Sprachmelodie und die Inspiration gewann. Diese Biografie zeigt, wie Wagner nicht nur als Komponist, Regisseur und Dirigent wegweisend wirkte, sondern auch das Berufsbild des sich immer wieder neu erfindenden Intellektuellen in Deutschland maßgebend prägte

    Abstract: "Greg Burgess's important new study explores the short life of the High Commission for Refugees (Jewish and Other) Coming from Germany, from its creation by the League of Nations in October 1933 to the resignation of High Commissioner, James G. McDonald, in December 1935. The book relates the history of the first stage of refugees from Germany through the prism of McDonald and the High Commission. It analyses the factors that shaped the Commission's formation, the undertakings the Commission embarked upon and its eventual failure owing to external complications. The League of Nations and the Refugees from Nazi Germany argues that, in spite of the Commission's failure, the refugees from Nazi Germany and the High Commission's work mark a turn in conceptions of international humanitarian responsibilities when a state defies standards of proper behaviour towards its citizens. From this point on, it was no longer considered sufficient or acceptable for states to respect the sovereign rights of another if the rights of citizens were being violated. Greg Burgess discusses this idea, amongst others, in detail as part of what is a crucial volume for all scholars and students of Nazi Germany, the Holocaust and modern Jewish history "--

Hass-Parolen auf antiisraelischen Demonstrationen in Berlin, Frankfurt, im Ruhrgebiet, einseitige Berichterstattung und Kritik an Israel in Medien, Parteien (SPD, Linke), evangelischer Kirche, unter Intellektuellen (Martin Walser, Günter Grass, Jakob Augstein "haben den Antisemitismus salonfähig gemacht"). Sie haben viele Gespräche geführt, mit einem israelischen Journalisten in Berlin oder der dortigen Leiterin des Jüdischen Museums, die von ihren Erfahrungen, Befindlichkeiten erzählen und die versuchen, eine Erklärung für den Antisemitismus im Nachkriegsdeutschland zu finden. Das Buch klärt über den in Deutschland vorhandenen Antisemitismus auf, macht die Angst der hier lebenden Juden deutlich. Für eine legitime Kritik an Israel fordern die Autoren objektive Informationsgrundlagen. Dafür bietet das Buch zu wenig: Kritik wird in Nebensätzen und verkürzt behandelt, wichtige kritische Stimmen aus Israel fehlen völlig. Zur Diskussion. (2)

    Abstract: Seit ihrem ersten Erscheinen gilt diese Dokumentation als Standardwerk zum Wagnerschen Antisemitismus und zum Antisemitismus des 19. Jahrhunderts überhaupt. Seinerzeit wurde sie von der internationalen Wagnerforschung als Grundlegung für eine vertiefte Diskussion über Wagners Haltung in dieser Frage begrüßt. Zum erstenmal erlaubt sie es einer größeren Leserschaft, die Schrift Wagners in beiden Versionen, der ursprünglichen von 1850 und der erheblich erweiterten von 1869 kennenzulernen. Eine umfangreiche Einleitung bettet Wagners Vorstellungen in den Kontext seiner Zeit ein, ohne dabei die Strukturen seiner persönlichen Judenfeindschaft zu vernachlässigen. Ein gewichtiger Teil des Buches dokumentiert außerdem die zeitgenössischen Reaktionen, die es vor allem auf die Zweitpublikation gab. Seit geraumer Zeit ist diese Dokumentation vergriffen, aber immer wieder wurde eine Neuausgabe gewünscht. Sie wird nun hier vorgelegt, durchgesehen und bibliographisch auf den neuesten Stand gebracht. Damit ist eine Grundlagenpublikation zu einem Thema, das in den letzten Jahren, besonders im Wagnerjubiläumsjahr 2013, an Brisanz noch gewonnen hat, erneut greifbar.

    Abstract: Richard Wagners Aufsatz 'Das Judenthum in der Musik' gilt als unrühmlicher Höhepunkt einer langen Tradition antisemitischen Musikschrifttums. Die Untersuchung nimmt die geistesgeschichtliche Entwicklung jüdischer Stereotype seit der Antike in den Blick, aus der heraus erst Wagners Geisteshaltung beim Verfassen seines Aufsatzes im 19. Jahrhundert verständlich wird. Das Stereotyp des 'inauthentischen Juden' wird entlang der Geschichte des Christentums, vor allem des Protestantismus bis hin zu Wagners frühen musikalischen Schriften verfolgt. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden abschließend am Beispiel des jüdischen Komponisten Giacomo Meyerbeer konkretisiert

    Abstract: Bericht einer ungewöhnlichen Zeitzeugin: Edith Silbermann, geborene Horowitz, aus Czernowitz (Bukowina), Schauspielerin, Rezitatorin, Übersetzerin, Germanistin, Publizistin, Mittlerin zwischen deutschen und jüdischen Kulturtraditionen, erzählt ihre bewegte Familiengeschichte und ihre Jugenderlebnisse in Czernowitz vor und während des Zweiten Weltkrieges; ein Kapitel des Buches ist dem Lyriker Paul Antschel (Celan) gewidmet, mit dem sie seit den Czernowitzer Tagen bis zu seinem Tode befreundet war. Paul war ihre und Edith seine erste Jugendliebe. Edith Silbermann zeichnet ein plastisches Bild einer versunkenen Kulturwelt, die Paul Celan, Rose Ausländer, Edgar Hilsenrath und viele andere deutschsprachige, aber auch jiddische, rumänische und ukrainische Autoren hervorgebracht hatte. Edith Silbermanns Elternhaus war ein Mittelpunkt regen geistigen Austausches. Die umfangreiche Büchersammlung ihres Vaters, Karl Horowitz, zog viele Lyriker magisch an. Für den jungen Paul Celan war diese Bibliothek eine wahre Fundgrube. Dort verfasste er auch einige seiner frühen Gedichte, die er Edith schenkte. Edith Silbermann hatte eine besondere Art der Vortragskunst entwickelt, die Rezitation, Sprechgesang und schauspielerische Darstellung mit einfühlsamen Interpretationen verband. Ihre Rezitationskunst, vor allem ihr jiddisches Liedprogramm, ihre Vertonung eines Gedichtes von Paul Celan und ihre Vortragsweise anderer seiner Gedichte begeisterten das Publikum in Wien, Salzburg, Amsterdam, Den Haag, Rotterdam, Paris, Pittsburgh, Berlin und in vielen anderen deutschen Städten. Der vorliegende Band bringt zwei Audio-CDs mit Aufnahmen aus ihrem reichen Rezitationsprogramm. Die Herausgeberin Amy-Diana Colin (PhD, Yale) hat die auf umfassender wissenschaftlicher Recherche beruhenden Kommentare zu den jiddischen Liedern und Gedichten sowie den biobibliographischen Apparat verfasst. Colin würdigt und dokumentiert zugleich die Leistung Edtih Silbermanns als Rezitatorin und Kulturvermittlerin.

    Abstract: "From the late nineteenth century through the post-Holocaust era, the world was divided between countries that tried to expel their Jewish populations and those that refused to let them in. The plight of these traumatized refugees inspired numerous proposals for Jewish states. Jews and Christians, authors and adventurers, politicians and playwrights, and rabbis and revolutionaries all worked to carve out autonomous Jewish territories in remote and often hostile locations across the globe. The would-be founding fathers of these imaginary Zions dispatched scientific expeditions to far-flung regions and filed reports on the dream states they planned to create. But only Israel emerged from dream to reality.
