Abstract:
Kolmar's play was written in March-June 1938. It's setting is in Rhodes in the year 2, and is a reworking of the legend of Tiberius and his Jewish girlfriend, Ischta. Tiberius is in exile in Rhodes, but he will eventually become the Emperor of Rome as he has been promised by Jewish and other seers. However, Ischta is sacrificed to the gods by Tiberius. The play can be read as an attempt to gain insight and understanding into the mechanisms of power, which result in the sacrifice of innocent victims along the way.
