Abstract: Argues that the expansion of the mass killing of Soviet Jews in July 1941 to include women and children (thus marking a transition to genocide) was the result of an order received by Einsatzgruppen at the time. Using material from the Einsatzkommando 9 trial held in 1959-60, especially the testimonies of two of its former officers, Greiffenberger and Schneider, shows that such an order was received by the commander of the EK 9, Alfred Filbert, on 17 July 1941. The order was most probably issued by Heydrich and was an outcome of the slowdown of the German offensive in the East and the increase in German losses in the rear. EK 9, a sub-commando of Eisatzgruppe B, acting mainly in Belorussia at the time, was the first unit to put the order into practice. Other commando units and Einsatzgruppen A, C, and D (acting in the Baltic areas, Ukraine, and southern Russia) implemented the order with some time lag, because their commanders received the order later.

Abstract: This article discusses the filmic representation of the infamous Wannsee Conference, when fifteen senior German officials met at a villa on the shore of a Berlin lake to discuss and co-ordinate the implementation of the so-called final solution to the Jewish question. The understanding reached during the course of the ninety-minute meeting cleared the way for the Europe-wide killing of six million Jews. The article sets out to answer the principal challenge facing anyone attempting to recreate the Wannsee Conference on film: what was the atmosphere of this conference and the attitude of the participants? Moreover, it discusses various ethical aspects related to the portrayal of evil, not in actions but in words, using the medium of film. In doing so, it focuses on the BBC/HBO television film Conspiracy (2001), directed by Frank Pierson, probing its historical accuracy and discussing its artistic credibility.

Abstract: On 2 May 1941, seven weeks prior to the German invasion of the USSR, a meeting of state secretaries took place in Berlin at which a plan was drafted to starve "x million people" in the occupied Soviet areas to death. Draws parallels between this meeting and the conference at Wannsee on 20 January 1942. Given the facts that the urban population of the USSR was a primary target of the planned starvation policy and that Soviet Jews were mostly urban dwellers, and that the Jews from the West, according to the Wannsee protocol, were to be brought to the Soviet territories, argues that these two plans were interconnected.

Abstract: The first comparative, comprehensive history of Nazi mass killing – showing how genocidal policies were crucial to the regime’s strategy to win the war Nazi Germany killed approximately 13 million civilians and other non-combatants in deliberate policies of mass murder, mostly during the war years. Almost half the victims were Jewish, systematically destroyed in the Holocaust, the core of the Nazis’ pan-European racial purification programme. Alex Kay argues that the genocide of European Jewry can be examined in the wider context of Nazi mass killing. For the first time, Empire of Destruction considers Europe’s Jews alongside all the other major victim groups: captive Red Army soldiers, the Soviet urban population, unarmed civilian victims of preventive terror and reprisals, the mentally and physically disabled, the European Roma and the Polish intelligentsia. Kay shows how each of these groups was regarded by the Nazi regime as a potential threat to Germany’s ability to successfully wage a war for hegemony in Europe. Combining the full quantitative scale of the killings with the individual horror, this is a vital and groundbreaking work
