    Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

    Abstract: Der Rechtsanwalt Achim Doerfer, geb. 1965 (zuletzt: "Die grosse Abzocke", ID-A 2/17), Sohn und Enkel von Holocaust-Überlebenden, Mitglied des Vorstands der Jüdischen Gemeinde Göttingen, bringt in diesem Buch sein Unbehagen mit der Erinnerungskultur an den Holocaust in Deutschland zum Ausdruck. Der erste Teil seines Buchs ist dem Thema jüdischer Widerstand in der NS-Zeit und jüdische Rache in der Nachkriegszeit gewidmet, im 2. Teil setzt er sich mit der politischen und juristischen Aufarbeitung des Holocaust auseinander und im 3. Teil mit dem "Märchen deutsch-jüdischer Versöhnung". Er beklagt, dass nach wie vor Jüdinnen und Juden vor allem als Opfer gesehen werden und es keine Anerkennung jüdischen Widerstands gibt. Er kritisiert die mangelnde Strafverfolgung von NS-Tätern. Kritisch sieht er auch, dass Erinnerungsarbeit vor allem von einem christlich geprägten Verständnis von Versöhnung geprägt ist. - Eine Streitschrift, die zur Auseinandersetzung mit der heutigen Erinnerungskultur an den Holocaust anregt.     Abstract: "The true story of a vigilante group of Holocaust survivors who conspired to kill six million Germans, Nakam (Hebrew for "vengeance") tells the story of "the Avengers" (Nokmim), a group of young Holocaust survivors led by poet and resistance fighter Abba Kovner, who undertook a mission of revenge against Germany following the crimes of the Holocaust. Motivated by both the atrocities they had endured and the realization that murderous antisemitic attacks on survivors continued long after the Nazi surrender, these fifty young men and women sought retaliation at a level commensurate with the devastation caused by the Holocaust, making clear to the world that Jewish blood would no longer be shed with impunity. Had they been successful, they would have poisoned city water supplies and loaves of bread distributed to German POWs, with the aim of killing six million Germans. Kovner and his followers went to great lengths to carry out their plans, going so far as to obtain the plans for Nuremberg's municipal water system, secure large quantities of poison, infiltrate a POW camp and the bakery that supplied it, and distribute poisoned bread to prisoners - but their plots were ultimately stymied. Most of the members of Nakam eventually returned to Israel, where for decades many of them refused to speak publicly about their roles in the group. While the Avengers' story began to come to light in the 1980s, details of the relations between the group and Zionist leadership and the motivations of its members have remained unknown. Drawing on rich archival sources and in-depth interviews with the Avengers in their later years, historian Dina Porat examines the formation of the group and the clash between the formative humanistic values held by its members and their unrealized plans for violent retribution"--

Götz Aly setzte sich in seinen Reden der vergangenen Jahre, von denen die wichtigsten in diesem Band versammelt sind, immer wieder mit den vielfältigen Praktiken auseinander, die Schuld auf möglichst kleine Gruppen und Unpersonen abzuschieben. Doch auch wenn sich mancher dagegen sperrt, so zeigt Götz Aly, es bleibt "Unser Nationalsozialismus". Seine Maxime lautet: Die Vergangenheit nicht "bewältigen", sondern vergegenwärtigen. So lässt sich daraus lernen.

There is an "unacknowledged kinship" between studies of Zionism and post-colonial studies, a kinship that deserves to be both discovered and acknowledged. Unacknowledged Kinships strives to facilitate a conversation between the historiography of Zionism and postcolonial studies by identifying and exploring possible linkages and affiliations between their subjects as well as the limits of such connections. The contributors to this volume discuss central theoretical concepts developed within the field of postcolonial studies, and they use these concepts to analyze crucial aspects of the history of Zionism while contextualizing Zionist thought, politics, and culture within colonial and postcolonial histories. This book also argues that postcolonial studies could gain from looking at the history of Zionism as an example of not only colonial domination but also the seemingly contradictory processes of national liberation and self-empowerment.     Abstract: Zwischen anti­faschistischer Gesell­schaft, sozialistischer Utopie und gelebtem Juden­tum: Was hieß es, jüdisch in der DDR zu sein? Viele Jüdinnen und Juden entschieden sich nach der Schoa bewusst für ein Leben im noch jungen deutschen, sozialistischen Staat – getrieben von dem Wunsch, ein besseres, ein anderes Land schaffen zu können. Was aus ihren Idealen wurde, wie sich jüdisches Leben in kleinen Gemeinden neu konstituierte und wie sich die gesellschaftlichen Umbrüche auf das Selbstverständnis der Jüdinnen und Juden in der DDR auswirkten, ist Thema dieses Bandes. Mit der kulturgeschichtlichen Ausstellung "Ein anderes Land" nimmt das Jüdische Museum Berlin vielstimmige jüdische Erfahrungen in der DDR in den Blick und macht damit einen bislang wenig beachteten Teil deutscher Nachkriegsgeschichte sichtbar.

    Abstract: Am 24. Juni 1922 wurde Außenminister Walther Rathenau in Berlin ermordet. Die Täter waren Mitglieder der Organisation Consul, einem paramilitärischen, rechtsradikalen Geheimbund aus dem Umfeld von Kadettenschulen und Offizierskasinos des Kaiserreichs, der die Zerstörung der Weimarer Republik zum Ziel hatte. Der Journalist Thomas Hüetlin erzählt die Vorgeschichte des Attentats und zeichnet das Portrait einer bemerkenswerten und ambivalenten Persönlichkeit: Der Berliner Jude Walther Rathenau stand für Weltläufigkeit und Moderne und nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg auch für Frieden, Aussöhnung und Kooperation mit anderen Nationen – und damit für alles, was das nationalistische Milieu verachtete. Hüetlin gewährt Einblicke in die beklemmende Welt der Täter und Mitverschwörer und schildert das gesellschaftliche Klima einer Zeit, in der Jüdinnen und Juden für die Miseren und Krisen Deutschlands verantwortlich gemacht wurden. Nicht zuletzt der Mord am Kasseler Regierungspräsidenten Walter Lübcke durch einen Rechtsextremisten im Juni 2019, fast hundert Jahre später, offenbart in erschreckender Weise die Aktualität von Hüetlins Reportage.

    Abstract: "For centuries Jews in Germany were denied full rights and excluded from gentile society. At the same time, Jewish law restricted scholarship to exegesis of the Talmud. But from the late seventeenth century onward, as German universities progressively opened their doors to them, many Jews turned toward university studies. This process accelerated around 1800 once education (Bildung) assumed a central role for social ascent among the so-called Bildungsbürgertum (cultural bourgeoisie). Many Jews sought to benefit from the professional and social opportunities that university attendance enabled, but they soon discovered that while the state encouraged education as a means of "moral improvement" of the Jews, it was unwilling to concede them the right to professional careers. Alienated from their ancestral religion and unwilling or unable to return to trading occupations, academized Jews often found themselves leading precarious existences. Many joined the struggle for emancipation or took up the reform of Judaism.     Abstract: In der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und in der DDR setzten sich Künstler*innen in vielfältigen Ausdrucksformen und Stilen mit der nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit auseinander. Dabei wurde das künstlerische Schaffen nicht nur durch staatsübergreifende Erinnerungsdiskurse beeinflusst. Vielmehr erzielten künstlerische Auseinandersetzungen mit der Vergangenheit eine emotionalisierende Wirkung auf das Ausstellungspublikum in Ost- und Westdeutschland und beeinflussten somit auch die Vergangenheitsdiskussionen.     Abstract: "In 1935, Adolf Hitler declared Munich the "Capital of the Movement." It was here that he developed his anti-Semitic beliefs and founded the Nazi party. Though Hitler's immediate milieu during the 1910s and 1920s has received ample attention, this book argues that the Munich of this period is worthy of study in its own right and that the changes the city underwent between 1918 and 1923 are absolutely crucial for understanding the rise of antisemitism and eventually Nazism in Germany. Before 1918, Munich had a decidedly cosmopolitan flavor, but its open atmosphere was shattered by the November Revolution of 1918-19. Jews were prominently represented among many of the European revolutions of the late 1910s and early 1920s, but nowhere did Jewish revolutionaries and government representatives appear in such high numbers as in Munich. The link between Jews and communist revolutionaries was especially strong in the minds of the city's residents. In the aftermath of the revolution and the short-lived Socialist regime that followed, the Jews of Munich experienced a massive backlash. The book unearths the story of Munich as ground zero for the racist and reactionary German Right, revealing how this came about and what it meant for those who lived through it"--

    Abstract: This discourse analysis, which also utilizes the thought of Jacques Lacan, examines hermeneutically (and to a lesser extent quantitatively) narrative and emotional correlations between German and Israeli media. Three selected media art projects that take up stereotypes of Muslims open our eyes to the contradictions and complexes inherent to certain discourses through "narrative reflections" in the sense of "emotional argumentation."
    Abstract: Was sagt die mediale Rede über den muslimischen Anderen eigentlich über uns aus? Die Doktorarbeit untersucht anhand einer „psychologischen Diskursanalyse“ Stereotypisierungen des Muslimischen in deutschen und israelischen Medien. Anhand der Rezeption von drei ausgewählten Medienkunstprojekten werden in einem ersten Schritt zentrale – neuerdings „psychologische“ – Diskurselemente aufgezeigt, die Stereotypisierungen aufbauen und die in einem zweiten Schritt verglichen werden. Den „diskursiven Medienkunstprojekten“ gelang dabei eine bisher nicht erfasste „mediale Interaktion“ als "narrative Rückspiegelung" zwischen alternativen und etablierten Medien. Die – hier mit Jaques Lacan erweiterte – Diskursanalyse in der Tradition des Duisburger Instituts für Sprach- und Sozialforschung hermeneutisch (und weniger quantitativ) zeigt narrative und emotionale Korrespondenzen in Form von "philosemitischen Einsamkeiten" oder "parallelen Empathielosigkeiten" zwischen deutschen und israelischen Diskursen, und zwar als oft unbewusste Komplexe, die Stereotypisierungen des Muslimischen aufbauen

    Abstract: "Colonialism and the Jews in German History brings together new and path-breaking studies on the historical relationship between colonialism and the Jews in Germany. The book considers the mutual influences on the situation of the Jews in Germany, including attitudes towards Jews and anti-Semitism but also Jewish self-conceptions, and the ideology and politics of German colonialism.     Abstract: "This quantitative study of Piotrków Trybunalski traces the evolution of the population in the typical early modern semi-agrarian town in which the majority of activity was concentrated in the Jewish suburbs into a provincial capital in Congress Poland. Through the use of longitudinal aggregations and family reconstruction it explores fertility, mortality, and marriage patterns from the early nineteenth century, when civil records were introduced, until the Holocaust, revealing key differences as well as striking similarities between local Jews and non-Jews. Aufgrund eines kritischen, z.T. stark stereotypen Bildes des italienischen Judentums traten die Repräsentanten der Wissenschaft des Judentums im Deutschland ihren italienischen Kollegen aus einer hegemonialen Position entgegen. Das Verhältnis zwischen der Wissenschaft des Judentums in Italien und jener in Deutschland war in vielerlei Hinsicht asymmetrisch, etwa wenn es um die strukturellen Voraussetzungen oder Publikationsmöglichkeiten ging. Der tatsächliche, intensive Wissenstransfer zwischen den jüdischen Gelehrten beider Länder verrät jedoch ein aufrichtiges Interesse aneinander und die wechselseitige Bereitschaft zur Förderung aller jüdisch-literarischen Bestrebungen. Die Studie unternimmt es, eine empfindliche Forschungslücke im Bereich der jüdischen Geistesgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts zu füllen, indem sie die Entwicklung der Wissenschaft des Judentums (der Vorläuferin der modernen historischen Judaistik), ihrer Institutionen, Publikationsorgane und zentralen Figuren in Italien mit jener im deutschen Sprachraum in Verbindung setzt und auf die komplexe Interaktion der beiden nationalen Wissenschaftskulturen hin untersucht
    Abstract: The study focuses on the transfer of knowledge and culture as well as the mutual networks between representatives of the German-language science of Judaism and a polyphonic Italian-Jewish group of scholars in the period between 1820 and 1870. It emphasizes the specific characteristics of the small Italian-speaking group of scholars in tension with the science of Judaism in the German context

Anhand der Geschichte strittiger Begriffe wie Assimilation, Minderheit oder Mehrheit, Ethnizität und Stamm erzählt dieses Buch eine Geschichte der Pluralität, die bis in unsere Gegenwart reicht.     Abstract: Am 17. Februar 2019 wäre Walter Grab 100 Jahre alt geworden. Sein persönlicher Werdegang spiegelt die Herausforderungen und politischen Verwerfungen des 20. Jahrhunderts wider. Als Historiker hat er wichtige Beiträge zur Demokratiegeschichte und ihrer Verbindung zur Emanzipation der Juden geleistet. Insbesondere die Französische Revolution und ihre Wirkungsgeschichte haben ihn lebenslang beschäftigt. Dabei stand auch die Frage im Mittelpunkt, weshalb die Ideen der Revolution in Deutschland nicht den gleichen Erfolg hatten wie etwa in Frankreich oder England. Diese Forschungen verknüpfte er mit einem anderen großen Thema, zu dem er ebenfalls bedeutende Beiträge geleistet hat: Dem Verhältnis zwischen der Demokratiebewegung und der Emanzipation der Juden in Europa. Im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Kolloquiums am Europa Kolleg und dem Institut für die Geschichte der deutschen Juden in Hamburg wurden seine Arbeiten gewürdigt und mit der Frage nach der Zukunft der Demokratie in Europa verknüpft werden. Der Band stellt die Ergebnisse einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit vor. Mit einem Grußwort des Kultursenators Dr. Carsten Brosda. Mit Beiträgen von Carsten Brosda, Uwe Friesel, Alexander Grab, Andreas Grimmel, Arno Herzig, Yael Kupferberg und Rainer Nicolaysen.
    Abstract: On February 17, 2019, Walter Grab would have turned 100. His personal career reflects the challenges and political upheavals of the 20th century. As a historian, he made important contributions to the history of democracy and its connection to the emancipation of the Jews. In particular, the French Revolution and its history of impact have occupied him throughout his life. He also focused on the question of why the ideas of the Revolution did not have the same success in Germany as they did, for example, in France or England. He linked this research to another major topic to which he also made significant contributions: The relationship between the democracy movement and the emancipation of Jews in Europe. In the context of an interdisciplinary colloquium at the Europa Kolleg Hamburg and the Institute for the History of German Jews in Hamburg, his work was honored and linked to the question of the future of democracy in Europe. This volume presents the results to a broader public. With a greeting by the Senator for Culture Dr. Carsten Brosda. With contributons by Carsten Brosda, Uwe Friesel, Alexander Grab, Andreas Grimmel, Arno Herzig, Yael Kupferberg and Rainer Nicolaysen.

    Abstract: Jews and Armenians are often perceived as peoples with similar tragic historical experiences. Not only were both groups forced into statelessness and a life outside their homelands for centuries, in the 20th century, in the shadow of war, they were threatened with collective annihilation. Thus far, academic approaches to these two "classical" diasporas have been quite different. Moreover, Armenian and Jewish questions posed during the 19th and 20th centuries have usually been treated separately. The conference “We Will Live After Babylon” that took place in Hanover in February 2019, addressed this gap in research and was one of the first initiatives to deal directly with Jewish and Armenian historical experiences, between expulsion, exile and annihilation, in a comparative framework.     Abstract: Bis vor wenigen Jahren hieß es in Deutschland stets, jüdisches Leben sei ein selbstverständlicher Teil der Normalität. Aber spätestens nach dem Überfall auf die Synagoge in Halle 2019 und der massiven Ausbreitung von antisemitischen Verschwörungsmythen in der Corona-Krise bekam dieses Bild tiefe Risse. Eva Gruberová und Helmut Zeller sind durch Deutschland gereist und haben zugehört – von Rostock über Berlin bis Dortmund und nach München, mit einem Abstecher nach Wien. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Juden hierzulande kein normales Leben führen können, es sei denn, man hält Polizei und Sicherheitszäune vor jüdischen Kindergärten, Brandanschläge auf Synagogen, oder perfide Witze für etwas, das zur deutschen Normalität gehört. Jüdinnen und Juden erleben Übergriffe und Anfeindungen auch aus muslimisch geprägten Milieus. Was aber viele nicht sehen: Antisemitismus kam und kommt aus der "bürgerlichen Mitte". Die Reportagen, Interviews und Analysen machen sichtbar, dass der Judenhass tief in der Gesellschaft verwurzelt ist – und uns alle angeht.

    Abstract: Die Überlebenden des Holocaust, die sich nach dem Ende des Krieges in der sowjetischen Besatzungszone niederließen, schwankten noch etliche Jahre lang zwischen Bleiben und Gehen. Während die einen Deutschland nur als Zwischenstation auf dem Weg nach Palästina oder den USA ansahen, letztlich aber doch in Berlin, Erfurt oder Leipzig blieben, sahen sich andere zu Beginn der 1950er-Jahre erneut zur Flucht aus ihrer alt-neuen Heimat gezwungen. Nur ein kleinerer Teil schloss sich wieder zu jüdischen Gemeinden zusammen. Die meisten der aus dem Exil in den sowjetischen Machtbereich zurückgekehrten Juden standen der Religion eher fern und wollten am Aufbau einer sozialistischen Gesellschaft mitwirken. Der Band beleuchtet einzelne widersprüchliche Aspekte dieses Neubeginns: Freiheit der Religionsausübung, staatliche Unterstützung für die Gemeindegründung und besondere soziale Fürsorge für die Überlebenden waren überschattet von fortdauerndem Antisemitismus in der Bevölkerung, vom Scheitern einer Wiedergutmachungsregelung und von der stalinistischen Verfolgung, die phasenweise auch eine deutlich antisemitische Richtung aufwies.

Mit der 1999 etablierten Gedenkstättenkonzeption ist der Bund an der Aufarbeitung der NS-Vergangenheit und auch des DDR-Kommunismus beteiligt.Unverkennbar ist jedoch der Trend, Geschichte und Geschichtsbewusstsein auf Erinnerung zu reduzieren und diese für den Königsweg von Demokratie- und Menschenrechtserziehung zu halten.Im Gegensatz dazu wird in diesem Band davon ausgegangen, dass weder das individuelle noch das historische Erinnern als solche automatisch identisch sind mit (selbst-)kritischem Lernen aus unannehmbarer Geschichte (Imre Kertész).     Abstract: "The Medieval Postcolonial Jew, In and Out of Time studies violent temporal clashes that are written into the medieval vision of annus domini [the year of our Lord]. Christian temporality represents Jewish time as queerly oddly outmoded and advocating uncivil and socially disruptive behavior. Jewish temporality, in turn, records a marginalized people who work to rescue their embattled temporality from becoming a time forgotten and colonized. Through a select group of literature in Middle English, Latin, and Hebrew, as well as sixteen manuscript pictorials, author Miriamne Ara Krummel confronts the notion that annus domini time (whether disguised as CE or AD) figures as the universal standard. Krummel's argument details how Other temporalities-ones outside and not like annus domini time-are cast as nonstandard and imagined as wholly devised out of stories that promote fear and terror, and are positioned as putative threats to the fabric of the temporal empire of Latin Christendom. Ultimately, the book reflects on the ways in which "common" time both marks and silences marginal identities and cultures and shows to what extent the dynamics of the medieval environment materialize in our modern world"--

    Abstract: Die deutsche Geschichtsschreibung hat in den letzten Jahrzehnten einen spezifischen "spatial turn" erfahren.     Abstract: Die Spannungen zwischen der Abgrenzung von der nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit und der durchgehenden Beschäftigung der DDR-Führung mit den politischen Folgen des „Dritten Reiches“ formulierten eine andere Art von „NS-Vergangenheitsbewältigung“ im Vergleich zur Bundesrepublik. Diese wurden von den ideologischen Vorbedingungen dieses Staates geprägt und hatten eine entscheidende Rolle in der Arbeit des Ministeriums für Auswärtige Angelegenheiten der DDR (MfAA). Jonathan Kaplan untersucht verschiedene Aspekte der „NS-Vergangenheitsbewältigung“ im MfAA: die Integration von DDR-Diplomaten mit politischen Erfahrungen aus dem „Dritten Reich“ und von Diplomaten mit jüdischer Herkunft, und die propagandistischen Maßnahmen der DDR gegen Nazi- und Kriegsverbrecher in der Bundesrepublik.
