Abstract:
Following an introduction, presents three documents (on pp. 121-149) describing anti-Jewish violence by Polish troops in Lida and Vilna in 1919, when Jews were widely identified with the Bolsheviks and many were massacred. Document 1 is the report of a local Jewish committee that investigated events after the Polish Legion captured Lida, including the murder of innocent Jews and looting of their property. The pogrom was attributed to rumors based on slander and prejudice. Jews were also subjected to insult and humiliation, forced labor, requisitions, and arrest. Document 2 is a list of 38 Jews killed in Lida, giving their ages and occupations and the circumstances of death. Document 3 is a report by Jews of Vilna to the Polish government about deportations, murders, atrocities, and looting suffered by Jews in Vilna and the surrounding areas. The Polish press is blamed for accusing all Jews of being Bolsheviks and, hence, making them targets for abuse and destruction.
