Abstract:
The Jewish student fraternities were founded in the 1890s, after the German fraternities increasingly excluded Jews; their original purpose was to combat antisemitism and maintain Jewish honor. Jewish students seeking integration into German society joined the Kartell-Convent (KC); those aspiring to greater national-Jewish identity joined one of two organizations with Zionist tendencies. All adopted the customs of the German fraternities, particularly dueling; challenge to a duel was considered essential to the maintenance of Jewish honor. The Jewish-national fraternities also represented Jewish interests in campus politics. Remarks that day-to-day internal fraternity affairs increasingly took precedence over the fight against antisemitism.
