Abstract:
Discusses the veracity of details of Holocaust testimony, based on a comparison between Nazi records and the testimony of Marianne Ellenbogen, who survived the Holocaust by hiding in various places in Germany. Most of Ellenbogen's testimony is corroborated by Nazi documents, including Gestapo and municipal records, although Gestapo files were sometimes meant to mislead the reader. However, survivors' memories are occasionally inaccurate and can change over time. For example, in Ellenbogen's memory, circumstances surrounding traumatic events took on slightly larger dimensions, while other events were diminished or underplayed; on the other hand, many unlikely things mentioned by her were corroborated by Nazi records. The discrepancies resulted from Ellenbogen's attempts to impose some control on unbearable memories and from her inability to confront the past as it was.
