Abstract: Describes the fate of Jewish soldiers in the Polish army who were taken prisoner in September 1939 and sent to Nazi POW camps. There were about 50,000 Jews among the 500,000 Polish prisoners. They were separated from the non-Jews, in violation of the international law for the protection of prisoners of war. The Jews were forced to build camps; they were prohibited from maintaining contact with the Polish prisoners. In 1940, the Jewish POWs were transported to the Generalgouvernement, handed over to the SS and Gestapo, and sent either to labor camps or extermination camps. The fate of Jewish army officers was different. Most of them survived the war. The Wehrmacht tried to isolate them in special ghettos in the "oflags, " but the Polish officers took a firm stance against segregation of the Jews. Concludes that the Nazis did not murder the Jewish officers for fear that Nazi officer-POWs would be murdered in retaliation.
