Abstract:
States that the anti-Jewish disturbances in Kielce took place in reaction to a meeting of the Jews in Kielce related to the independence of Poland. Four Jews were killed; ca. 250 people, mainly Jews, were injured. On 4 December, Jewish members of the City Council submitted a protest to the Council in which the authorities were criticized for lack of adequate police action during the events. This protest was discussed at a meeting of the Council on 11 December. Both the protest and minutes of the meeting are presented (pp. 56-68). The minutes show a diversity of opinions expressed by Polish and Jewish members of the Council. Concludes that the Polish members of the Council mainly represented the approach of Endecja, reflecting the prevailing attitude among the elites in the cities of Poland. A statement issued by the Council condemned the pogrom, but also contended that the Jews "provoked" the Poles by demanding autonomy in the new state of Poland which would then become "Judeo-Polonia".
