Abstract:
In recent years there have been discussions in Poland about which term denoting the Holocaust is most appropriate - loan-words like "Holocaust", "Holokaust" and "Shoah", "Szoa", or the Polish "Zagłada". These terms have different connotations: e.g. "Holocaust" and "Shoah" are religious terms, not so fitting to denote the Nazi-sponsored mass murder; "Holocaust" can be used as a synonym for genocide, not specifically the genocide of the Jews. Some authors object to using the word "Holocaust" and prefer Polish terms. Expresses discontent with the word "Shoah" as having an un-Polish phonetic make-up, but predicts that all three words will function in the Polish language to denote the Nazi genocide of Jews, albeit in different spheres. Calls for the Polonization of their spelling: "Holokaust", not "Holocaust"; "Szoa", not "Shoah".
