Abstract:
Describes consecutive steps of persecution of the Jews in the Radom district from 1939 on, the foundation of ghettos and their liquidation, and the deportation to extermination camps. Most of the Jews in the district were murdered. Already in the 1930s relations between Jews and Poles deteriorated due to the strong antisemitic propaganda of Endecja circles trying to convince Poles that the Jews should be eliminated from economic life in the town, contending that then the situation of Poles would be much improved. Presents various attitudes of Poles who witnessed the persecutions and the murders. The most widespread attitude was indifference to the fate of the Jews. Sees the source of that indifference in prewar negative stereotypes of the Jews, and in cultural and religious barriers. Only a small number of Poles helped the Jews, which was a courageous act at the time because helping the Jews incurred a death penalty. A small group also denounced those Jews who escaped from the ghetto and were hiding in the countryside or in the forests.
