Abstract:
Discusses the establishment and activities of the Judenrat in the Radom district, set up in September 1939. Describes the figure of Józef Diament, the chairman of the Judenrat, who dominated the Council. The Judenrat was involved in supplying forced laborers and in the deportations. In this region, some "resettlements" were organized by the Jewish Council and not by the Nazis. There were, as well, some positive activities, involving help given to the poor and needy. However, the Council was seen by the Jews in the district as corrupt and collaborating with the Nazis, and they felt disappointed and embittered. Diament and his associates were arrested and sent to Auschwitz in April 1942 and then the Radom District Judenrat ceased to exist.
