Abstract:
Describes the case of Aristides de Sousa Mendes (1885-1954), Portuguese consul-general in Bordeaux from 1938, who saved the lives of about 30,000 persons (10,000 of them Jews) during the Nazi occupation, against his government's orders. After the war he was placed on inactive service, his diplomatic career ruined. In 1967, Yad Vashem declared him a "Righteous Gentile." In 1987-88 Portugal recognized Mendes' rescue activities by awarding a medal to his family and reintegrating him into the foreign service posthumously, with appropriate compensation to the family.
