Abstract:
Describes the difficult economic situation in Poland in the late 1930s that resulted in harsh rivalries and antagonism between Poles and Jews. The Endecja Party, struggling for power in Poland, promoted a boycott of Jewish trade and instigated the peasants against the Jewish "strangers". Focuses on the Kielce region, where Endecja influences were strong. In response to the boycott and violent incidents, the Jews of Przytyk organized a self-defense group. In the Przytyk market on 9 March 1936 a call by Endecja members to boycott Jewish trade provoked a response by Jews. This resulted in a riot, during which one Pole and two Jews were killed and many were wounded. At the trial in Radom, many Jews were accused of and condemned for the violence, while the Poles were not seen as guilty. Describes reactions to this trial which did not bring justice, and deals with its echoes in Poland and abroad.
