Abstract:
During the revolution of 1905-07 in Russia, the Polish Endecja abandoned its anti-Russian ideology in favor of a pro-Russian, anti-German stance, and even assisted Russian forces in suppressing the revolution. At the same time, its anti-Jewish stance was radicalized due to its belief in an affinity between German and Polish Jews and in the existence of an international Jewish socialist conspiracy against Poland. Demands made by Polish Jews for national-cultural autonomy were seen as part of a Jewish-Masonic plot to destroy the Polish nation; therefore, in elections to the first three dumas, the Endecja opposed Jewish representation. Under its leader, Roman Dmowski, the Endecja opposed assimilation due to what it considered the "inherently destructive character of Jewishness" and used antisemitism to unite Poles in the nationalist camp.
