    Abstract: In den letzten drei Jahrzehnten hat die Erforschung der jüdischen Geschichte Thüringens einen grossen Aufschwung genommen. Der Band gibt einen Einblick in die Entwicklung jüdischen Lebens in der Region vom Mittelalter bis ins 20. Jahrhundert. Die Beiträge befassen sich u.a. mit der Blütezeit jüdischen Lebens in Thüringen im Mittelalter, mit der Entwicklung des Landjudentums in der Frühen Neuzeit und der Rolle der Hofjuden in den zahlreichen thüringischen Residenzen, dem Kampf um die rechtliche Emanzipation im 19. Jahrhundert, der Verfolgung und Vernichtung während der Zeit des Dritten Reiches und dem Neubeginn jüdischen Lebens in Thüringen nach 1945. Anhand ausgewählter Themenfelder bietet der Band sowohl eine Bilanz der bisherigen Forschung als auch einen Einblick in aktuelle Projekte und einen Ausblick auf künftige Forschungsperspektiven

    Abstract: "Most of the roughly 140,000 Holocaust survivors who came to the United States in the first decade after World War II settled in big cities such as New York. But a few thousand chose an alternative way of life on American farms. More of these accidental farmers wound up raising chickens in southern New Jersey than anywhere else. Speaking Yiddish to Chickens is the first book to chronicle this little-known chapter in American Jewish history when these mostly Eastern European refugees - including the author's grandparents - found an unlikely refuge and gateway to new lives in the US on poultry farms. They gravitated to a section of south Jersey anchored by Vineland, a small rural city where previous waves of Jewish immigrants had built a rich network of cultural and religious institutions. This book relies on interviews with dozens of these refugee farmers and their children, as well as oral histories and archival records to tell how they learned to farm while coping with unimaginable grief. They built small synagogues within walking distances of their farms and hosted Yiddish cultural events more frequently found on the Lower East Side than perhaps anywhere else in rural America at the time. Like refugees today, they embraced their new American identities and enriched the community where they settled, working hard in unfamiliar jobs for often meager returns. Within a decade, falling egg prices and the rise of industrial-scale agriculture in the South would drive almost all of these novice poultry farmers out of business, many into bankruptcy. Some hated every minute here; others would remember their time on south Jersey farms as their best years in America. They enjoyed a quieter way of life and more space for themselves and their children than in the crowded New York City apartments where so many displaced persons settled. This is their remarkable story of loss, renewal, and perseverance in the most unexpected of settings"

    Abstract: Zwischen 1933-1941 verließ knapp die Hälfte der aufgrund ihrer jüdischen Wurzeln verfolgten Münchner Bürger ihre Heimatstadt, um sich im Ausland ein neues Leben aufzubauen. Was bewegte die Münchner Juden dazu, den Schritt in die Emigration zu wagen? Unter der offensichtlichen Antwort der Erfahrung nationalsozialistischer Verfolgung verborgen lag ein vielschichtiges Netz aus Beweggründen. Anhand von Statistiken zur jüdischen Emigration aus München sowie durch detaillierte Einblicke in die Schicksale von vier Münchner jüdischen Familien stellt dieses Buch dar, wie unterschiedlich Entscheidungsprozesse für oder gegen die Auswanderung waren und wie stark die erfolgreiche Durchführung einer Emigration von einer Vielzahl externer Faktoren abhing.     Abstract: "This book offers a comparative study between a number of Talmudic and Middle Persian narratives. The present work seeks first and foremost to examine Talmudic narratives in their Iranian context, and secondly to examine the Talmudic background of Iranian narratives where applicable. The first and second chapters will offer an analysis of the alteration of historical and biblical figures in the Bavli (the Babylonian Talmud) based on the influence of Iranian mythical and historical figures, while the third chapter will provide an account of how Iranists can learn from Talmudic studies. Here we suggest that a Talmudic narrative may have encouraged Zoroastrian priests to compose an extensive work of religious literature, namely the Ardā Wīrāz-nāmag, an idea which will be further explored in the appendix. The relationship between Iranian and Jewish materials in the Talmudic era is merely a piece of a larger puzzle, a piece that a number of scholars-such as Elman, Secunda, Mokhtarian, Her-man, Kiel, Kalmin, to name a few-have recently begun to focus on. By focusing on Talmudic narratives that have not yet been sufficiently examined for Iranian themes and ideas, this book represents a contribution towards piecing this puzzle together"--

    Abstract: Jesus the Jew is the primary signifier of Christianity's indebtedness to Judaism. This connection is both historical and continuous. In this book, Barbara Meyer shows how Christian memory, as largely intertwined with Jewish memory, provides a framework to examine the theological dimensions of historical Jesus research. She explores the topics that are central to the Jewishness of Jesus, such as the Christian relationship to law, and otherness as a Christological category. Through the lenses of the otherness of the Jewish Jesus for contemporary Christians, she also discusses circumcision, natality, vulnerability, and suffering in dialogue with thinkers seldom drawn into Jewish-Christian discourse, notably Hannah Arendt, Julia Kristeva, Martha Nussbaum and Adi Ophir. Meyer demonstrates how the memory of Jesus' Jewishness is a key to reconfiguring contemporary challenges to Christian thought, such as particularity and otherness, law and ethics after the Shoah, human responsibility, and divine vulnerability

    Abstract: Previously considered irretrievably lost, the discovery of the only manuscript of the Messias Puer composed by Knorr von Rosenroth, the leading exponent of Christian Kabbalah in the seventeenth century, gives us an important insight into the evolution of his thought and specific vision of the relations between Jews and Christians. Moreover, the subtle intertwining of both Kabbalah and the emerging biblical criticism at work in this partial commentary on the New Testament Gospels sheds new light on the largely unexplored role of Esotericism during the Modern Era in the construction of the future study of religion.     Abstract: "This book is the first to link the modern appreciation for democratic freedom directly to Jewish political thought in seventeenth-century Amsterdam. The modern appreciation for democratic values is often assumed to have its roots in Classical thought. However, democracy has taken various forms in its progression to the governance many countries now employ. Working in dialog with Protestants, Jewish thinkers voiced the first Modern appeal for the reestablishment of a Jewish polity in the Holy Land. This appeal was grounded in a vision of a Jewish state governed by individual liberty and popular consent, which could be defined as a democratic Zionism. The book focuses on influential rabbi Saul Levi Morteira, as well as two of the most renowned members of his congregation, Baruch Spinoza and Miguel de Barrios. Unlike contemporary Catholic and Protestant thinkers, these three intellectuals found democratic values in an Old Testament polity that came to be revered as the Hebrew Republic. The book explores the trajectory by which this democratization of the Hebrew Republic evolved in the writings of Morteira as an alternative to divine-right rule. It then shows that, in spite of their divergent views toward practicing Judaism, Spinoza and Barrios disseminated Morteira's democratic ideas and promoted the Hebrew Republic as a model polity for a post-medieval political order. This book will be of great use to scholars of Judaism and Jewish philosophy in the modern era, medieval and early modern Spanish literature, as well as religious, political and intellectual history" --

    Abstract: Over the last decades, studies on cultural memory have taken a 'spectral turn'. They have explored the potential of haunting metaphors for addressing past instances of violence that affect present cultural realities. Zuzanna Dziuban contributes to the discussions on the figure of the ghost by enquiring into its culturally and historically located modality: the emergence of Jewish ghosts in contemporary Polish popular culture, literature and critical art. Locating this new interest in Jewish ghosts on the map of other Polish (and Jewish) ghostologies, this study seeks to explore the cultural and political functions of post-Holocaust haunted imaginaire.

    Abstract: "We treat the word Judaism as a given for describing the religion of Jews. But the term is in some ways socially constructed, rather than inevitable. After all, exactly what would constitute "authentic" Judaism? Some have argued that there are multiple Judaisms, going in the direction of plurals that so many scholars find satisfying. But Boyarin takes a different tack, proposing that before the modern era there should be no "Judiasm" at all. For Boyarin, there was no sphere of life that can be called Judaism that was separate from the political, artistic, and cultural elements of life. Moreover, he argues that Judaism is a Christian coinage to serve Christian discursive purposes by setting what we call Judaism in opposition to Christianity and that the term has little utility for Jews. The various Jewish languages have no such concept and no such term. He believes that categories drawn from outside the culture are anachronistic, not informative. Boyarin will be making a case for substituting Jewry for Judaism. Jewry is a concept that integrates many aspects of the lives of Jews, rather than separating out religion from other aspects of life"--

    Abstract: "This book discusses the "long fifteenth century" in Iberian history, between the 1391 pogroms and the forced conversions of Aragonese Muslims in 1526, a period characterized by persecutions, conversions and social violence, on the one hand, and cultural exchange, on the other. It was a historical moment of unstable religious ideas and identities, before the rigid turn taken by Spanish Catholicism by the middle of the sixteenth century; a period in which the physical and symbolic borders separating the three religions were transformed and redefined but still remained extraordinarily porous.     Abstract: The scientific debates on border crossings and cultural exchange between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have much increased over the last decades. Within this context, however, little attention has been given to the biblical Exodus, which not only plays a pivotal role in the Abrahamic religions, but also is a master narrative of a border crossing in itself. Sea and desert are spaces of liminality and transit in more than just a geographical sense. Their passage includes a transition to freedom and initiation into a new divine community, an encounter with God and an entry into the Age of law. The volume gathers twelve articles written by leading specialists in Jewish and Islamic Studies, Theology and Literature, Art and Film history, dedicated to the transitional aspects within the Exodus narrative. Bringing these studies together, the volume takes a double approach, one that is both comparative and intercultural. How do Jewish, Christian and Islamic texts and images read and retell the various border crossings in the Exodus story, and on what levels do they interrelate? By raising these questions the volume aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of contact points between the various traditions

    Abstract: During Israel's military operation in Gaza in the summer of 2014 the commanding officer of the Givati infantry brigade, Col. Ofer Vinter, called on his troops to fight "the terrorists who defame the God of Israel". This unprecedented call for religious war by a senior IDF commander caused an uproar, but it was just one symptom of a profound process of religionization, or de-secularization, that Israeli society has been going through since the turn of the twenty-first century. This book analyses and explains the reasons for the religionization of Israeli society, a process known in Hebrew as hadata. It argues that this process had its origins in the 1967 war, has been accelerating since 2000, and is manifested in a number of key social fields. It further argues that Jewish religion, inseparable from Jewish nationality, was embedded in Zionism from its inception at the end of the 19th Century but was subdued to a certain extent in favour of the national aspect in the interest of building a modern nation-state. In addition to discussing religionization in the military, the educational system, and the media of mass communications, the book includes a major chapter on the religionization of the Israeli visual fine arts field, a topic that has not been researched before now. Through careful examination of religionization, this book sheds light on a major development in Israeli society, which will additionally inform our understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As such, it is a key resource for students and scholars of Israel Studies, and those interested the relations between religion, politics and nationalism, secularization and new social movements

    Abstract: In The Authority of Law in the Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism , Vroom identifies a development in the authority of written law that took place in early Judaism. Ever since Assyriologists began to recognize that the Mesopotamian law collections did not function as law codes do today—as a source of binding obligation—scholars have grappled with the question of when the Pentateuchal legal corpora came to be treated as legally binding. Vroom draws from legal theory to provide a theoretical framework for understanding the nature of legal authority, and develops a methodology for identifying instances in which legal texts were treated as binding law by ancient interpreters. This method is applied to a selection of legal-interpretive texts: Ezra-Nehemiah, Temple Scroll, the Qumran rule texts, and the Samaritan Pentateuch

    Abstract: Die palästinakundliche Sammlung des Greifswalder Gustaf Dalman-Institutes beherbergt unter anderem eine Bibliothek wertvoller hebräischer Drucke aus dem 16.-18. Jahrhundert. Etwa 20 davon enthalten umfangreiche Zensurvermerke, die mehrheitlich aus Oberitalien stammen. Anhand dieses Materials untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit das Phänomen der päpstlichen Zensur jüdischer Bücher zunächst mit Blick auf das Verfahren und fragt nach den Zensoren, ihren Kriterien, Richtlinien und Methoden. Daraus ergibt sich sodann die Frage nach der christlichen Wahrnehmung des Judentums, die darin zum Ausdruck kommt. Um welche Sachverhalte wird gestritten? Was bedeutet die Zensur für die Textüberlieferung? Wie lassen sich die christlich-jüdischen Beziehungen im Spiegel solcher Diskurse beschreiben? Wissenskontrolle und Wissenstransfer erscheinen als die beiden Seiten ein und derselben Medaille.     Abstract: In Nuptial Symbolism in Second Temple Writings, the New Testament and Rabbinic Literature , André Villeneuve examines the ancient Jewish concept of the covenant between God and Israel, portrayed as a marriage dynamically moving through salvation history. This nuptial covenant was established in Eden but damaged by sin; it was restored at the Sinai theophany, perpetuated in the Temple liturgy, and expected to reach its final consummation at the end of days. The authors of the New Testament adopted the same key moments of salvation history to describe the spousal relationship between Christ and the Church. In their typological treatment of these motifs, they established an exegetical framework that would anticipate the four senses of Scripture later adopted by patristic and medieval commentators

    Abstract: "This special edition large format LSTS volume publishes ten biblical and five non-biblical fragments from the Judean Desert, more than half of them for the first time. The fragments will be published with 42 adjoining photographs. The publication of seven new fragments from the Judean Desert will supplement the Discoveries in the Judaean Desert series and update scholars on the full textual situation. Two of the new biblical fragments preserve substantial textual variants. The new Aramaic fragment demonstrates interesting linguistic forms. The book will include a 10 page essay by Martin Schoyen about how he tracked down and acquired Judean Desert fragments and artifacts from 1994, and another (15-20 pages) by Hanan Eshel on the present state of affairs with regard to Judean Desert fragments in private hands.     Abstract: Das Judentum ist als pädagogisch wirkender Kulturzusammenhang anzusehen, der global und interkulturell zu betrachten ist. In drei Etappen – von der Binnenperspektive zu transkulturellen Aneignungen – stellt der Band die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang von Bildung und Kultur neu. Im ersten Teil werden pädagogische Strukturen des kulturell institutionalisierten Judentums aus einer Binnenperspektive historisch begründet. Dabei geraten ihre Einflüsse von Moderne und Aufklärung ebenso in den Blick wie ihre Ursprünge in der Thorah.     Abstract: This study examines the relationship between time and history in Second Temple literature. Numerous sources from that period express a belief that Jewish history began with an act of covenant formation and proceeded in linear fashion until the exile, an unprecedented event which severed the present from the past. The authors of Ben Sira, Jubilees , the Animal Apocalypse , and 4 Ezra responded to this theological challenge by claiming instead that Jewish history began at creation. Between creation and redemption, history unfolds as a series of static, repeating patterns that simultaneously account for the disappointments of the Second Temple period and confirm the eternal nature of the covenant. As iterations of timeless, cyclical patterns, the difficult post-exilic present and the glorious redemption of the future emerge as familiar, unremarkable, and inevitable historical developments

    Abstract: "In this book von Wahlde provides an exploration of three distinct cultural and religious backgrounds against which scholars have frequently proposed that the Gospel and Letters of John are to be read and understood. von Wahlde examines each of these three possibilities in turn, and shows how they may be regarded as plausible or implausible depending upon the evidence available. von Wahlde shows that there are features within the Gospel and/or Letters of John that do in fact suggest that they were influenced either by Gnosticism, Docetism or one of the variant forms of Judaism. However, in each case, while some of the evidence suggests a particular background, von Wahlde shows that it is equally evident that not all of the evidence can be seen to suggest the same background. Through an examination of the origins and purpose of the gospel, and drawing on the conclusions of his well-regarded commentary on the Johannine literature, von Wahlde presents a new way of understanding the Gospel in its wider contexts."--Bloomsbury Publishing

Wissenschaftler_innen aus Deutschland und Italien entwerfen in diesem Band Möglichkeiten eines zukünftigen Erinnerns. Erstmalig werden dabei auch Lorenza Mazzettis malerische Bearbeitungen eines traumatischen Massakers durch deutsche Soldaten, Bruno Canovas künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Faschismus sowie neue Erkenntnisse über das Schicksal Felix Nussbaums vorgestellt und in die fachhistorischen Diskurse eingebettet.

    Abstract: Welche Rolle spielen räumliche Aspekte für die Identitätsarbeit und Gemeinschaftsbildung junger russischsprachiger Juden, die heute in Deutschland leben? Alina Gromova hat 15 junge Erwachsene ein Jahr lang durch ihren Alltag begleitet und ist ihnen an Orte wie jüdische Treffs und Partys, Cafés und Wohnungen, Synagogen und Clubs gefolgt. Die Analyse von Begegnungen zwischen jüdischen, russischen, deutschen, israelischen und muslimischen Traditionen offenbart einen ungezwungenen Umgang mit jüdischer Religion und Symbolik, jüdischer Essenstradition und Mode.Diese ethnologische Studie zeigt: Es ist ein Umgang »koscher light«, in dem sich Religion und Tradition nach den Gesetzen der Urbanität richten.
    Abstract: What role do spatial aspects play for the identity work and community education of young Russian-speaking Jews who now live in Germany? Alina Gromova has accompanied 15 young adults for a year through their daily lives and followed them to places like Jewish dates and parties, cafés and homes, synagogues and clubs. Her analysis of encounters between Jewish, Russian, German, Israeli, and Muslim traditions reveals a casual handling of Jewish religion, symbolism, food tradition, and fashion. This ethnographic study exhibits the dealings of Generation »Kosher Light«, in which religion and tradition conform to the laws of urbanity.
