Abstract:
A lecture delivered at the ICCJ Consultation in Prague, August 1990. Surveys the persistence of antisemitism in Poland after World War II, expressed in the political, cultural, religious, and social spheres up to the present day. Even when there were practically no Jews left in Poland, Polish-Jewish relations became an inner-Polish issue; antisemitism has become an instrument in a struggle between Poles. Three events in the past decade brought the problems into the public light: the film "Shoah, " Jan Blonski's article, and the Auschwitz Carmelite convent controversy. Notes recent attempts at reaching a better understanding in Polish-Jewish relations, but concludes that the present dialogue is conducted by the elite while the impact on Polish society is slight, that the growing impact of the nationalist Right (which uses antisemitic slogans) is a threat to Polish democracy, and that the Catholic Church could do more to fight xenophobia and antisemitism.
