Abstract:
When the term "socialists" or "socialism" is applied in the context of the 18th century, the reference is to a group of intellectuals distinguishable by three features: scathing criticism of the ancien régime, proposals for reforms, and a description of the ideal society or state that would arise in the future. Examines the works of three of these socialists: Mably, Mercier, and Linguet. Socialist positions on the Jewish question varied between extreme antisemitism and open support for the Jews, in accordance with changing conditions.
