Abstract:
A paper presented at a meeting of the International Jewish-Catholic Liaison Committee (Rome, October 1985). Comments on the "Notes on the Correct Way to Present Jews and Judaism in Preaching and Catechesis" issued in 1985. Jewish circles hoped that the notes would reflect statements by Church leaders calling for the elimination of anti-Jewish prejudice from Catholic teaching and recognition of the eternal validity of Judaism. Previous research showed that while cruder antisemitic expressions have been eliminated from Catholic textbooks, negative stereotypes persist. The "Notes" contain admissions of the validity of Judaism, but Jews are disappointed by the assertion that salvation can be achieved only within the Church, and by the superficial treatment of the issues of antisemitism, the Holocaust, and Israel.
