Abstract:
Discusses Anatolii Rybakov's novel "Deti Arbata" ("Children of the Arbat"), published in 1988 in Moscow. The main subject of the novel, on which Rybakov had worked since the 1960s, is the Soviet generation of the 1930s. One of the "children of the Arbat" is an antisemite. His family's resentment of the new regime and of their own loss of status is turned against the Jews. The novel discusses, also, Stalin's antisemitism, which is motivated by his belief that it is in the nature of Jews to oppose authority. Among the political prisoners (Zeks), whose deportation to Siberia is described, are some Jewish characters, and despite their assimilation they also suffer from antisemitism.
