Abstract:
Quoting the original version of the Ahasver legend from 1602 (in Germany) shows that Ahasver, the Wandering Jew, was not meant to be a negative figure. On the contrary, there was a certain admiration for the Jew who converted and pity for his eternal punishment. However, after a short time, a fake version of this legend was published, in which Ahasver was accused of blasphemy, representing all the Jews. This version, which charges the Jews with a collective guilt and includes anti-Jewish remarks, was revised and published for anti-Jewish incitement throughout the centuries.
