Abstract:
Discusses Theodor Fontane's antisemitism, which Michael Fleischer, in his study "Kommen Sie, Cohn" (1998) traced "like a red thread" in the author's personal correspondence. One of Fontane's antisemitic letters was even reprinted in the SS journal "Das Schwarze Korps" in 1935. But, in general, literary historians, including the editors of Fontane's correspondence with his wife (also in 1998) minimize this trait in the writer. In his published works, Fontane was much more cautious in expressions of antisemitism; on occasion he even demolished antisemitic stereotypes, as in the person of the generous moneylender Baruch Hirschfeld in "Der Stechlin". Discusses Fontane's antisemitism in the context of his character and his social-political milieu.
