Abstract:
Gives details of the controversy over the convent from its establishment in 1984. Discusses the moves which led to the 1987 agreement to relocate the convent, the subsequent delays, postponements, and mutual suspicions which reached a climax in 1989 with demonstrations at Auschwitz led by American Rabbi Avi Weiss, and antisemitic speeches by Poland's Cardinal Glemp. The Vatican intervened to defuse the crisis by removing the matter from administration by the Polish Church. Notes that John Paul II's intervention at an earlier stage would have prevented the crisis, and that his unsettling remark that "Israel's infidelity to God" had caused the creation of a new covenant was made at the height of the dispute.
