Abstract:
Criticizes German historian Heinz Schilling for hurried writing in the passages that deal with Luther's anti-Judaism in his book "Martin Luther: Rebell in einer Zeit des Umbruchs" (2012). Notes that Schilling misuses quotes from Osten-Sacken's own monograph "Martin Luther und die Juden" (2002) and from M. Awerbuch's "Humanismus: Reformation und Judentum" (1985). Schilling claims that the two historians connect Luther's anti-Judaism to Hitler's antisemitism. Osten-Sacken emphasizes that he and Awerbuch do not evaluate Luther in the light of later history, even though they underscore that Luther preached hatred and destruction of human dignity. Remarks, also, on false, questionable, and conflicting statements by Schilling regarding certain aspects of Luther's attitude toward the Jews.
