Abstract:
The Midrash, a form of Bible commentary, was compiled between the 4th century BCE-7th century CE. Midrashic literature used the biblical typology of the animosity between Jacob and Esau to illustrate the Jew-hatred of ancient times. The rabbis believed that whilst events and circumstances may change, the animosity between Jews and Gentiles remained the same. Antisemitism is portrayed as an inevitable reality, and the Jewish response is acceptance, not necessarily passive, of this situation.
