Abstract:
Discusses Justinian's decrees concerning the Jews, published between 535-553. Jews could not hold office and could not own Christian slaves. Assemblies for communal prayer were prohibited, and synagogues were turned into churches. Justinian issued marriage laws conflicting with Jewish law. Jews were called upon to serve as "curiales", a burden rather than an honor. Jewish interpretations of the Bible were prohibited, since they supposedly distorted the plain meaning (as interpreted by Christianity) and thus negated fundamental Christian dogma. Justinian speaks of Jews as being insane for rejecting the true faith.
