    Abstract: Das vorliegende Buch beschreibt das Schicksal polnischer Juden im besetzten Deutschland der Jahre 1945–1948. Untersucht wird vor allem ihr Verhältnis zu den einheimischen Deutschen, den Besatzungsmächten, den polnischen DPs sowie den Vertretern von Hilfsorganisationen in den DP-Lagern. Es ergibt sich das Bild einer Gemeinschaft, die ihre Wurzeln in der jüdischen Bevölkerung im Polen der Vorkriegszeit hat. Zugleich verkörpern diese Menschen eine neue Identität: die der Scher’it Hapleitah – der Überlebenden der Shoah. Aus den „polnischen Juden“ wurden in den Nachkriegsjahren Juden aus Polen, und schließlich schlichtweg Juden, die ihr Leben außerhalb ihres Herkunftslandes aufbauen wollten. Die Erfahrung der Shoah und der Glaube an eine Zukunft in Palästina hielten diese Gemeinschaft zusammen.
    Abstract: This book discusses the fate of Polish Jews in postwar Germany 1945–1948, focusing primarily on their relations with their surroundings: local German population, the occupying administration, Polish DPs, and representatives of the aid agencies in the DP camps. The book looks at a community, which to a large degree remained a continuation of the Jewish community in Poland. Its members were still part of the pre-war and wartime networks, while becoming a new entity: a group creating a new identity, that of Sh'erit ha-Pletah: the survivors of the Holocaust. During the years they spent in Germany Polish Jews became Jews from Poland and finally simply Jews building their lives outside their country of origin. This community was unified by the shared experience of the Holocaust and the belief in the future in Palestine.
    Abstract: Monografia opisuje los polskich Żydów w powojennych Niemczech w latach 1945–1948, koncentrując się przede wszystkim na ich relacji z otoczeniem: miejscową społecznością niemiecką, administracją i żołnierzami wojsk okupacyjnych, polskimi dipisami i przedstawicielami zarządzających obozami organizacji pomocowych. Z badań przedstawionych w książce wyłania się obraz społeczności, która była kontynuacją przedwojennej żydowskiej społeczności w Polsce, ale jednocześnie stawała się czymś zupełnie nowym – grupą budującą nową tożsamość, tożsamość Szerit hapleta – ocalałych z Zagłady. W czasie kilkuletniego pobytu w Niemczech polscy Żydzi stali się Żydami z Polski i wreszcie po prostu Żydami, budującymi życie poza krajem urodzenia. Spoiwem tej społeczności było doświadczenie Zagłady i wiara w przyszłość narodu w Palestynie.

    Abstract: "The international conference "Psalms in Rituals from Antiquity to the Present," held on October 24-26, 2018, at the Max-Weber Kolleg in the University of Erfurt, Germany, aimed to showcase and also to build upon recent developments in what has become a very exciting field, bringing to it the distinctive perspective of the Research Centre "Dynamics of Jewish Ritual Practices in Pluralistic Contexts from Antiquity to the Present," which hosted the event. The Research Centre, which was funded from 2015 to 2020 by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), investigated the dynamic relationship of rituals in pluralistic contexts and specifically in Jewish and Christian religious traditions. While religious institutions often focus on tradition, invariability, and rootedness in history, the Research Centre has found and studied numerous examples of innovation and change in regard to religious ritual practices. This landmark conference approached the subject of the Psalms as a dynamic part of Jewish liturgy, ritual, and community formation from a broad perspective. ... This volume contains a selection of the papers delivered at that conference together with two additional papers, those of James Aitken and Laura S.     Abstract: Im Dezember 321 teilte der römische Kaiser Konstantin den Kölner Ratsherren mit, dass es fortan gesetzlich möglich sei, auch jüdische Bürger in den Rat zu berufen. Sein Brief gilt als die älteste schriftliche Quelle, die jüdisches Leben auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Deutschlands belegt. Er ist somit die Grundlage dafür, dass 2021 das Festjahr „1700 Jahre jüdisches Leben in Deutschland“ begangen wurde. In den 24 Beiträgen dieses Buches, die zum überwiegenden Teil auf einen Call for Papers für „Aus Politik und Zeitgeschichte“ zurückgehen, spiegelt sich ein kleines Stück der Vielfalt des jüdischen Lebens in Deutschland wider – von den frühen Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart. Sie zeigen, dass gelebtes Judentum wesentlich mehr ist als Religion, und dass es innerhalb der jüdischen Community in Deutschland eine große Bandbreite unterschiedlichster und sich wandelnder Identitäten gibt.

    Abstract: "This volume presents the culmination of research on an almost ignored literary corpus: the translations into literary Italian of classical Hebrew texts made by Jews between 1550 and 1650. It includes dozens of poetical and philosophical texts and wisdom literature as well as dictionaries and biblical translations produced in what their authors viewed as a national tongue, common to Christians and Jews. In so doing, the authors/translators explicitly left behind the so-called Judeo-Italian. These texts, many of them being published for the first time, are studied in the context of intellectual and literary history. The book is an original contribution showing that the linguistic acculturation of German Jews in the late 18th century occurred in Italy 150 years earlier"

    Abstract: This book is the only comprehensive treatment in any language of a rather "exotic" Balkan Jewish community. It places the Jewish community of Bosnia and Herzegovina into the context of the Jewish world, but also of the world within which it existed for around five hundred years under various empires and regimes. The Bosnian Jews might have remained a mostly unknown community to the rest of the world had it not played a unique role within the Bosnian Wars of the early 1990s, providing humanitarian aid to its neighbor Serbs, Croats, and Muslims

    Abstract: Am 17. Februar 2019 wäre Walter Grab 100 Jahre alt geworden. Sein persönlicher Werdegang spiegelt die Herausforderungen und politischen Verwerfungen des 20. Jahrhunderts wider. Als Historiker hat er wichtige Beiträge zur Demokratiegeschichte und ihrer Verbindung zur Emanzipation der Juden geleistet. Insbesondere die Französische Revolution und ihre Wirkungsgeschichte haben ihn lebenslang beschäftigt. Dabei stand auch die Frage im Mittelpunkt, weshalb die Ideen der Revolution in Deutschland nicht den gleichen Erfolg hatten wie etwa in Frankreich oder England. Diese Forschungen verknüpfte er mit einem anderen großen Thema, zu dem er ebenfalls bedeutende Beiträge geleistet hat: Dem Verhältnis zwischen der Demokratiebewegung und der Emanzipation der Juden in Europa. Im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Kolloquiums am Europa Kolleg und dem Institut für die Geschichte der deutschen Juden in Hamburg wurden seine Arbeiten gewürdigt und mit der Frage nach der Zukunft der Demokratie in Europa verknüpft werden. Der Band stellt die Ergebnisse einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit vor. Mit einem Grußwort des Kultursenators Dr. Carsten Brosda. Mit Beiträgen von Carsten Brosda, Uwe Friesel, Alexander Grab, Andreas Grimmel, Arno Herzig, Yael Kupferberg und Rainer Nicolaysen.
    Abstract: On February 17, 2019, Walter Grab would have turned 100. His personal career reflects the challenges and political upheavals of the 20th century. As a historian, he made important contributions to the history of democracy and its connection to the emancipation of the Jews. In particular, the French Revolution and its history of impact have occupied him throughout his life. He also focused on the question of why the ideas of the Revolution did not have the same success in Germany as they did, for example, in France or England. He linked this research to another major topic to which he also made significant contributions: The relationship between the democracy movement and the emancipation of Jews in Europe. In the context of an interdisciplinary colloquium at the Europa Kolleg Hamburg and the Institute for the History of German Jews in Hamburg, his work was honored and linked to the question of the future of democracy in Europe. This volume presents the results to a broader public. With a greeting by the Senator for Culture Dr. Carsten Brosda. With contributons by Carsten Brosda, Uwe Friesel, Alexander Grab, Andreas Grimmel, Arno Herzig, Yael Kupferberg and Rainer Nicolaysen.

    Abstract: "This study investigates the negotiation of Jewish-German-Communist identity in post-Holocaust Germany, specifically East Germany. After an introduction to the political-historical context, it highlights the conflicted writings of six East German Jewish writers: Anna Seghers (1900-1983), Stefan Heym (1913-2001), Stephan Hermlin (1915-1997), Jurek Becker (1937-1997), Peter Edel (1921-1983), and Fred Wander (1917-2006). All were Holocaust survivors. All lost family members in the Holocaust. All were important writers who played a leading role in East German cultural life, and all were loyal citizens and committed socialists, although their definitions and maneuvers regarding Party loyalty differed greatly. Good soldiers, they viewed their writing as contributing to the social-political revolution taking place in East Germany. Informed by Holocaust and trauma studies, as well as psychology and deconstruction, this study looks for moments when Party discipline falters and other, repressed, thoughts and emotions surface, decentering the works. Some recurring questions addressed include: What is the image of Germans? Do the works evidence revenge fantasies? How does the negotiation of ostensibly mutually exclusive identities play out? Is there acknowledgement of the insufficiency of Communist theory to explain anti-Semitism, as well as recognition of Stalinist or other forms of Communist anti-Semitism? Although these writers ultimately established themselves in East Germany, attaining positions of privilege and even power, their best works nonetheless evince an acute sense of endangerment and vulnerability; they are documents both created and marked by trauma"--

    Abstract: In Drunk on Genocide, Edward B. Westermann reveals how, over the course of the Third Reich, scenes involving alcohol consumption and revelry among the SS and police became a routine part of rituals of humiliation in the camps, ghettos, and killing fields of Eastern Europe. Westermann draws on a vast range of newly unearthed material to explore how alcohol consumption served as a literal and metaphorical lubricant for mass murder. It facilitated "performative masculinity," expressly linked to physical or sexual violence. Such inebriated exhibitions extended from meetings of top Nazi officials to the rank and file, celebrating at the grave sites of their victims. Westermann argues that, contrary to the common misconception of the SS and police as stone-cold killers, they were, in fact, intoxicated with the act of murder itself. Drunk on Genocide highlights the intersections of masculinity, drinking ritual, sexual violence, and mass murder to expose the role of alcohol and celebratory ritual in the Nazi genocide of European Jews. Its surprising and disturbing findings offer a new perspective on the mindset, motivation, and mentality of killers as they prepared for, and participated in, mass extermination

Einige Historiker, Politiker sowie Bürgerrechtler instrumentalisieren die DDR-Aufarbeitung sogar für ihr rechtspopulistisches Engagement. Das Buch fasst wesentliche Ergebnisse der Tagung „Nach Auschwitz: Schwieriges Erbe DDR“ vom Januar 2017 zusammen. Es versteht sich als ein Plädoyer für eine intensivere Hinwendung der Zeitgeschichtsforschung wie der politischen Bildung zur Untersuchung und Kritik der SED-Diktatur als einer von drei Nachfolgegesellschaften des Nationalsozialismus.     Abstract: Remigration und Austauschbeziehungen in die Diaspora untermauerten das Selbstverständnis der transnationalen Gemeinschaft der Juden in Deutschland nach 1945. Aber wie entwickelte sich jüdisches Gemeindeleben unter ihrem Einfluss im geteilten Deutschland? Im Beitrag werden am Beispiel der Gemeinden in Dresden und Würzburg Säkularisierungs- und Traditionsbelebungsprozesse unter dem Einfluss von Remigration nachvollzogen. Unter Einbeziehung der politischen Bedingungen im Kalten Krieg wird als Zweites der Frage nachgegangen, welche Rolle transnationale Beziehungen und Räume für das jeweilige Gemeindeleben spielten.

Der liberale jüdische Theologe Leo Baeck (1873 IBM1956) wurde mit seinem Hauptwerk ?Das Wesen des Judentums? von 1905 weithin bekannt. Doch sein Werk steht heute IBM anders als das Martin Bubers oder Franz Rosenzweigs IBM im Schatten seiner politischen Funktionen während des Dritten Reichs. Michael Meyer schildert eindrucksvoll, wie der Rabbiner dank seiner Bereitschaft zum Martyrium fast Unmögliches erreichte. Als Präsident der ?Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden? blieb er in Verhandlungen mit der Gestapo trotz Verhaftungen standhaft, verhalf zahllosen Juden zur Auswanderung und widerstand mehrfachen Gelegenheiten zur Flucht. Ab 1943 in Theresienstadt interniert, nahm er dort vor allem seelsorgerliche und soziale Aufgaben wahr. Nachdem er ganz unerwartet das Ghetto überlebt hatte, emigrierte er nach London. Das 1955 in Jerusalem gegründete internationale Leo Baeck Institut machte ihn zu seinem ersten Präsidenten.     Abstract: "In Émigré Voices Lewkowicz and Grenville present twelve oral history interviews with men and women who came to Britain as Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria in the late 1930s. Many of the interviewees rose to great prominence in their chosen career, such as the author and illustrator Judith Kerr, the actor Andrew Sachs, the photographer and cameraman Wolf Suschitzky, the violinist Norbert Brainin, and the publisher Elly Miller. The narratives of the interviewees tell of their common struggles as child or young adult refugees who had to forge new lives in a foreign country and they illuminate how each interviewee dealt with the challenges of forced emigration and the Holocaust.     Abstract: Jews and the study of antisemitism are often disregarded in multiculturalism in the United States. This “brushing aside” of the Jewish community places Jews in a very difficult situation because, due to continued discrimination and prejudice, Jews need recognition and acceptance in the multicultural community. While light-skinned American Jews are often perceived as White, they are positioned between being considered White and somehow less than when they are found to be Jewish. Therefore, Jews find themselves in this nebulous “space between” the Black/White binary. This text takes a personal approach to the study of Jewish people, antisemitism, and the inclusion of the Jewish experience into university multicultural discourse. It also introduces a new Jewish critical race framework that develops from Critical Race Theory and has similarities in the fight against racism and injustice in U.S. society. The Jewish Struggle in the 21st Century: Conflict, Positionality, and Multiculturalism addresses the needs of the Jewish community in the United States as it pertains to its tenuous position in the fields of multiculturalism and critical race studies. It addresses the lack of representation in the diversity and multicultural education classroom as well as issues of antisemitism at the university level

Die Zusammenhänge zwischen der nationalsozialistischen „Euthanasie“ und dem Holocaust sind noch immer nicht vollständig erforscht. Der Sammelband, zu dem namhafte Forscherinnen und Forscher beigetragen haben, beschäftigt sich mit den Beziehungen zwischen den beiden Mordprogrammen. Er benennt Kontinuitäten, Kausalitäten und parallele Entwicklungen. Dabei geht es um Themen wie Biopolitik, Eugenik und Zwangssterilisation, die Judenverfolgung in der Vorkriegszeit, die Morde im Rahmen der „Aktion T4“, die Krankenmorde in den Konzentrationslagern und im besetzten Polen, die „Aktion Reinhardt“ sowie die justizielle Ahndung der Verbrechen nach 1945. Die Untersuchungen erweitern unser Verständnis von den Verbrechen im Nationalsozialismus insgesamt und speziell zum Verhältnis von „Euthanasie“ und Holocaust.

    Abstract: Fragt man nach der Rolle des Privaten im Nationalsozialismus, werden meist zwei Thesen aufgeführt: Das Privatleben im Dritten Reich wurde politisiert, andererseits hat ein Rückzug in private Nischen stattgefunden. Unabhängig davon wurde dem zeitgenössischen Verständnis bislang nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit zuteil. Diese Studie rekonstruiert unterschiedliche Bedeutungen des Privaten während des NS-Regimes und versteht das Private als ein Deutungsmuster, mit dem gesellschaftliche und politische Prozesse analysiert wurden. Auf der Grundlage von autobiographischen Beiträgen deutscher Emigranten, die 1940 in Harvard gesammelt wurden, zeigt der Autor, dass es zu einer zentralen sprachlichen Praxis wurde, zwischen Privatem und Politischem zu unterscheiden. Ausgrenzung und Verfolgung drangen selbst in die Sprache des Privaten ein. So werden bisherige Forschungen zum Nationalsozialismus um eine neue Sichtweise aus der Historischen Semantik ergänzt

    Abstract: Der Band präsentiert die Vielfalt der jüdischen Erfahrungen in der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit erstmals aus einer gesamteuropäischen, transnationalen Perspektive. Die elf Essays und zahlreichen Abbildungen zeigen, dass jüdische Überlebende und Flüchtlinge keine apathische Gruppe von Opfern waren, sondern ihr Schicksal nach dem Zivilisationsbruch aktiv in die Hand nahmen: Sie suchten überlebende Verwandte, organisierten ihre Ausreise, versuchten trotz katastrophaler Zustände soziale Netzwerke und jüdische Gemeinden wiederaufzubauen und bemühten sich um Gerechtigkeit und Wiedergutmachung sowie um die Dokumentation der nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen. Vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Flüchtlingskrise und dem Zunehmen nationalistischer Politik in Europa fokussiert der Band auf die unmittelbare Nachkriegszeit als Geburtsstunde der europäischen Idee und zeigt, wie sich eben diese Idee in den Biographien überlebender Jüdinnen und Juden abzeichnet. Die vorgeschlagenen Maßnahmen reichten dabei von reduzierter Hilfeleistung für sog. ›Schwache‹, über Heiratsförderungen oder -verbote und Zwangssterilisation bis hin zur staatlich gesteuerten Fortpflanzung der Menschen. Dies hatte zur Folge, dass sich zum Ende des 19. und am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts auch in Deutschland eine erhebliche Bandbreite an ›rassenhygienischer‹ Literatur entwickelte, welche die Grundlage der vorliegenden Diskursanalyse bildet. “Decline“ or “rise” – between these two poles of the early “Rassenhygiene” or “Eugenik” different positions and recommendations were proposed for the prevention of the so-called “Entartung” of the modern “Kulturmenschheit” or the promotion of the so-called “Höherzüchtung”. The suggested agendas covered limited assistance for so-called “weak”, special facilitation or ban of marriage and forced sterilization to the point of state-controlled reproduction of human beings. As a consequence, by the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century an extensive variety of “rassenhygienischer” literature emerged in Germany forming the basis for the present discourse analysis.

    Abstract: Die Erinnerung an den religiös-zionistischen Pädagogen Kurt Silberpfennig (1905–1942) stellt sich dar wie ein vor langer Zeit zerschlagenes Glas; die meisten Scherben sind zu Splittern zertreten, blind geworden und zu Sand zerrieben. Nur Weniges ist von ihm geblieben, eine Akte mit Studienunterlagen, ein Ausreiseantrag, ein polizeiliches Vernehmungsprotokoll, wenige Briefwechsel, zwei Zeitschriftenbeiträge, drei Fotos, sein Name in Adressbüchern. Die Recherchen führen zu einem Lehrer und Jugendfunktionär, der an der jüdischen Volksschule des Philanthropin in Frankfurt am Main unterrichtete, anschließend für den Jugendverband Bachad im Palästina-Amt in Berlin arbeitete und in dieser Funktion als Delegierter 1939 am 21. Zionistenkongress in Genf teilnahm. Ab 1940 leitete Silberpfennig das Hachschara-Lager Steckelsdorf in Brandenburg und wurde im Juli 1942 mit seiner Familie und den Steckelsdorfer Jugendlichen nach Auschwitz deportiert. Der Studie gelingt es, die noch vorhandenen Fragmente in ihren zeitgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang einzuordnen und schließlich eine weitgehend unbekannte Phase deutsch-jüdischer Bildungsgeschichte zu rekonstruieren.

Im Fokus der Studie stehen eine Reihe von markanten politisch-ideologischen Themenfeldern und Schlüsseldebatten aus der zionistischen Wochenzeitung Jüdische Rundschau, die mit Konzepten der modernen Nationalismus- und Zionismusforschung sowie mit Ansätzen aus der postkolonialen Kritik untersucht werden. In enger Anlehnung an Homi K. Bhabhas Hybriditätstheorie geht die Autorin von der These aus, dass der deutsche Zionismus eine eigentümliche, ›hybride‹ Variante von Nationalismus entwickelte, die einerseits ausgiebig auf die Traditionsbestände des deutschen Nationalismus zurückgriff, und andererseits sich zugleich davon distanzierte. The present study explores concepts of ‘nation’ and ‘nationalism’ in early German Zionism before the First World War. Doing so, it focuses on a series of crucial issues and keynote debates in the contemporary Zionist press, particularly in the prominent Zionist newspaper Jüdische Rundschau. The introduction adapts current theories of Zionism, nationalism and postcolonial studies so as to provide a methodological framework of analysis for Diaspora Zionism. It argues that German Zionism is best understood in line with Homi K. Bhabha’s notion of hybridity as it was characterized by a close affinity to various forms of German nationalism, while, at the same time, by its own distinctive – albeit contradictory or counternarrative – transformations of these adapted ideas.

Jewish-Christian Grass Root Initiatives in Germany and Austria after 1945] From a doctrine of contempt to a doctrine of respect: After 1945 Christian churches had to confront their own anti-Jewish tradition and recognized their complicity for the shoah. The Jewish-Christian Dialogue is one significant result of that shift in mindset. In Germany and Austria, Jewish-Christian discussion initiatives based on the Hebrew Bible - a common document of faith shared by both Judaism and Christianity - were established in the first decades of the post-war period. This monography concentrates on four such dialogue initiatives, and the genesis and development of these dialogue-based educational formats and their reception of the Bible are analysed. The qualitative study grants dialogue-participants ample space for their perceptions und experiences.

    Abstract: Obwohl das Thema »Gedächtnis« Teil eines großen Diskurses innerhalb der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften ist, fehlt es bislang an einer Gedächtnistheorie, die einen echten epistemischen Nutzen für die Geschichtswissenschaft aufweist. Mit Hilfe der soziologischen Systemtheorie von Niklas Luhmann überträgt Juliane Reil konstruktive Ansätze aus den Theorien von Jan Assmann, Pierre Nora und Johannes Fried in ein integratives Modell von Gedächtnistheorie. Dabei wird das komplexe Zusammenspiel von Gedächtnisprozessen auf individueller und kollektiver Ebene anhand von prominenten Beispielen des praktischen Umgangs mit dem Holocaust (etwa den vielerorts gelegten »Stolpersteinen«) deutlich gemacht

Die Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger fragen, welche geschlechtsspezifischen Erwartungen an Männer, Frauen und Paare in der »Volksgemeinschaft« gerichtet wurden, welche Handlungsräume sich ihnen eröffneten oder verschlossen und welche Dynamiken die gedachten wie gemachten Ordnungen freisetzten.     Abstract: In Lost in Translation, Found in Transliteration , Alex Kerner examines London’s Spanish andamp; Portuguese Jews’ congregation in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as a community that delineated its identity not only along ethnic and religious lines, but also along the various languages spoken by its members. By zealously keeping Hebrew and Spanish for prayer and Portuguese for community administration, generations of wardens attempted to keep control over their community, alongside a tough censorial policy on book printing. Clinging to the Iberian languages worked as a bulwark against assimilation, adding language to religion as an additional identity component. As Spanish and Portuguese speaking generations were replaced with younger ones, English permeated daily and community life intensifying assimilationist trends

    Abstract: The Jew in Czech and Slovak Imagination,1938-89 is the first critical inquiry into the nature of anti-Jewish prejudices in both main parts of former Czechoslovakia. The authors identify anti-Jewish prejudices over almost fifty years of the twentieth century, focusing primarily on the post-Munich period and the Second World War (1938–45), the post-war reconstruction (1945–48), as well as the Communist rule with both its thaws and returns to hardline rule (1948–89). It is a provocative examination of the construction of the image of ‘the Jew’ in the Czech and Slovak majority societies, the assigning of character and other traits – real or imaginary – to individuals or groups. The book analyses the impact of these constructed images on the attitudes of the majority societies towards the Jews, and on Holocaust memory in the country

Jahrhunderts und verstärkt im Deutschen Kaiserreich war der völkische Nationalismus in der Rechten verankert und gewann während der Weimarer Republik sichtlich an politischer Relevanz. Das Handbuch beschreibt und analysiert das Aufkommen rechtspopulistischer Wissenschaftsfelder seit der Jahrhundertwende bis hin zur Radikalisierung, Nazifizierung und Mobilisierung von Wissenschaftlern für die Kriegs-, Umsiedlungs- und Vernichtungsabsichten in den Jahren bis 1944/45. Völkische Forschungsparadigmen wirkten auch danach in der Bundesrepublik weiter und können bis in die Gegenwart verfolgt werden. Die Neuauflage des Handbuchs nimmt die wissenschaftshistorische Herausforderung an und erschließt mit rund 150 neuen Lemmata und Neuüberarbeitungen bisherige Leerstellen.     Abstract: "The Scientification of the "Jewish Question" under National Socialism describes the attempt of a considerable number of German scholars to counter the vanishing influence of religious prejudices against the Jews with a new antisemitic rationale. As anti-Jewish stereotypes of an old-fashioned soteriological kind had become dysfunctional under the pressure of secularization, a new, more objective explanation was needed to justify the age-old danger of Judaism in the present. In the 1930s a new research field called "Judenforschung" (Jew research) emerged. Its leading figures amalgamated racial and religious features to verify the existence of an everlasting "Jewish problem". Along with that they offered scholarly concepts for its solution"--

    Abstract: Antisemitism is on the rise in Europe, sometimes manifesting in violent acts against Jews, but more commonly noticeable in everyday discourse. This innovative empirical study examines written examples of antisemitism in contemporary Germany. Drawing on 14,000 letters and e-mails sent between 2002 and 2012 to the Central Council of Jews in Germany and the Israeli embassy in Berlin, as well communications sent between 2010 and 2011 to Israeli embassies across Europe, the authors show how language plays a crucial role in activating antisemitism across a broad spectrum of social classes, investigate the role of emotions in antisemitic argumentation patterns, and analyze “anti-Israelism” as the dominant form of contemporary hatred of Jews

    Abstract: The New Ethnic Studies in Latin America aims at going beyond and against much of Jewish Latin American historiography, situating Jewish-Latin Americans in the larger multi-ethnic context of their countries. Senior and junior scholars from various countries joined together to challenge commonly held assumptions, accepted ideas, and stable categories about ethnicity in Latin America in general and Jewish experiences on this continent in particular. This volume brings to the discussions on Jewish life in Latin America less heard voices of women, non-affiliated Jews, and intellectuals. Community institutions are not at center stage, conflicts and tensions are brought to the fore, and a multitude of voices pushes aside images of homogeneity. Authors in this tome look at Jews’ multiple homelands: their country of birth, their country of residence, and their imagined homeland of Zion

    Abstract: »Gott liebt die Juden«. Erst während des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils brachte die Kirche es über sich, diese Erklärung in ihre Verlautbarungen aufzunehmen. Zuvor hatte sie jahrtausendelang gelehrt, dass das Volk, dem die Kreuzigung Jesu zur Last gelegt wird, von Gott verflucht sei und bleibe. In den 1940er Jahren schwieg die Katholische Kirche überwiegend, als Juden von den Nationalsozialisten zu Millionen ermordet wurden. Wie kam es dazu, dass eine Institution mit der Aura der Unfehlbarkeit einen der revolutionärsten ideologischen Paradigmenwechsel der Neuzeit unternahm? Die Gründe für diesen radikalen Schnitt entspringen den Jahren kurz vor dem Holocaust, aus einem verzweifelten theologischen Kampf, den eine kleine Gruppe katholischer Konvertiten bestritt, um ihre neuentdeckte Glaubensgemeinschaft vor dem Einfluss der nationalsozialistischen Ideologien zu schützen. Insbesondere der ehemalige Jude Johannes Oesterreicher sowie der einstige Protestant Karl Thieme überwanden diesen besonders fraglichen Aspekt der katholischen Kirchengeschichte, indem sie in jahrelangem Engagement Debatten in akademischen Schriften anstießen, sich für die Volksbildung einsetzten und ihre Interessen auch im Vatikan selbst durchzusetzen versuchten. Doch ihr letztendlicher Erfolg war nicht die Folge immer neuer Aufrufe zu mehr Menschlichkeit, sondern der Neuentdeckung bis dahin vernachlässigter Teile der Heiligen Schrift. Der Band beleuchtet das erstaunliche Stillschweigen, welches die Kirche während des Holocausts bewahrte, und zeigt die uralten Lehren auf – laut derer die Juden erst vom Fluch Gottes erlöst würden, wenn sie sich Christus zuwendeten –, die zu der problematischen Haltung der Christen dem Judentum gegenüber führte

    Abstract: The Festschrift Darkhei Noam: The Jews of Arab Lands presented to Norman (Noam) Stillman offers a coherent and thought-provoking discussion by eminent scholars in the field of both the history and culture of the Jews in the Islamic World from pre-modern to modern times. Based on primary sources the book speaks to the resilience, flexibility, and creativity of Jewish culture in Arab lands. The volume clearly addresses the areas of research Norman Stillman himself has considerably contributed to. Research foci of the book are on the flexibility of Jewish law in real life, Jewish cultural life particularly on material and musical culture, the role of women in these different societies, antisemitism and Jewish responses to hatred against the Jews, and antisemitism from ancient martyrdom to modern political Zionism
