Abstract: Both the Hebrew Bible and extrabiblical literature consider food and drink to be gifts from the deity to be enjoyed by human beings, especially when they live according to the divine laws and in moderation. When it comes to extrabiblical early Jewish texts about the meal in the World to Come, one notices a curious detail: while the World to Come is portrayed as being one of utter abundance and joy, none of the texts actually describe the righteous as drinking. References to drinking natural water, fruit being turned into drink, or any other possibility for the human consumption of liquids are simply absent from these texts. How is this to be explained? This article investigates the possible reasons for the conscious or subconscious omission of a function of the human body that is most common to all human beings.

Abstract: This article investigates the contexts in which the theme of breastfeeding occurs in the Hebrew Bible in order to determine to what extent these texts carry a literary function that goes beyond historical information, biological facts, and descriptions of human emotions. It finds that references to breastfeeding are often located in narratives about changing circumstances for individuals as well as in texts that reference the deity’s involvement with human beings. It is the thesis of this article that the theme of breastfeeding directs attention to infant Israel as it goes through the early stages of life and overcomes many difficulties while it can claim both a firm ancestry (symbolized by successful, strong, and long breastfeeding relationships) and the enduring attention of its God. In the end, it is the deity — albeit through human and especially female involvement — that nurses Israel into being and ensures its ongoing strength in past, present, and future.

Abstract: Ritual Dynamics in Jewish and Christian Contexts investigates questions that arise in modern ritual studies concerning Jewish and Christian religious communities: How did their religious rituals develop? Where did different ritual communities and their ritual texts interact? How did religious communities and their authoritative texts respond to change, and how did change influence religious rituals? The volume is a product of the interdisciplinary and international research efforts taken by the Research Centre “Dynamics of Jewish Ritual Practices in Pluralistic Contexts from Antiquity to the Present” at the Universität Erfurt (Germany) and unites the voices of important senior and emerging scholars in the field. It focuses on antiquity and the medieval period but also considers examples from the early modern and modern period in Europe
