    Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

    Abstract: Much of the most recent research on Jewish scepticism was inspired by the work of the early modern Venetian rabbi Simone Luzzatto, the first thinker in the history of Jewish thought to declare himself a sceptic and a follower of the New Academy. This collected volume shines new light on the intimate relationship between Luzzatto’s sceptical thinking and an era marked by paradoxes and contrasts between religious devotion and scientific rationalism, as well as between the rabbinic-biblical Jewish tradition and the open tendency towards engagement with non-Jewish philosophical, literary, scientific, and theological cultures. It plots out an original path along which to understand Luzzatto’s scepticism by pointing to the various facets of being a Jewish sceptic in seventeenth-century Italy.

    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

    Abstract: Why are conceptions of afterlife so diverse in both Jewish and Christian antiquity? This collection of essays offers explanations for this diversity through the lens of social memory theory. Das erste haben bereits viele gelesen, das zweite wurde bisher kaum beachtet. Die Studie „Schreibformen. Georges Perecs literarischer Materialismus“ schließt diese Forschungslücke. Sie skizziert die marxistische Genealogie in Perecs Texten und zeigt, dass seine oulipotische Praxis nicht zu bloßen Sprachspielereien führt. Das Schreiben unter formalen Einschränkungen ist vielmehr als eine Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlichen Zwängen zu begreifen, unter denen auch die künstlerische Arbeit steht. Literarische Praxis und Gesellschaftskritik fallen dabei zusammen. Angesichts der gegenwärtigen Unschärfe im Verhältnis von Aktionismus und Kunst sind Perecs Schreibformen wegweisend.

    Abstract: Theology is the science of the incomprehensible. Understood as an independent university discipline, it offers multifaceted perspectives that require not only an interdisciplinary but also an epistemological balancing act. Scientific theology in this sense is always exchange, reflection, encounter, and positioning as well as a form of transcendence.     Abstract: Theologie ist die Wissenschaft vom Unbegreifbaren. Als eigenständige universitäre Disziplin verstanden bietet sie facettenreiche Perspektiven, die nicht nur einen interdisziplinären, sondern zugleich epistemologischen Balanceakt erfordern. Wissenschaftliche Theologie in diesem Sinne ist immer Austausch, Reflexion, Begegnung und Positionierung sowie eine Form von Transzendenz. Partridge also documents public school teachers, federal program leaders, and politicians demanding that young immigrants account for the global persistence of anti-Semitism as part of the German state's commitment to anti-genocidal education. He uses these stories to interrogate the relationships between European Enlightenment, Holocaust memory, and Black futures, showing how noncitizens work to reshape their everyday lives. In doing so, he demonstrates how Blackness is a concept that energizes, inspires, and makes possible participation beyond national belonging for immigrants, refugees, Black people, and other People of Color

    Abstract: Jewish music has become the subject of a respectable literature in different academic disciplines and a touchstone of public and intellectual discourse in such diverse fields as the performing arts and religious studies, the visual arts and philology, cultural studies, and librarianship, and spanning topics that extend to almost all continents. As a forward-looking and multidisciplinary endeavor, The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Music Studies maps this emerging field within the framework of spatiality, temporality, and collectivity as analytical and conceptual categories. It does so by embracing all hemispheres, and interrogating Jewish music’s meaning of various places and spaces across the temporal frame of antiquity through the early twenty-first century. The introductory chapter provides a theoretical foundation that paves the way for the rich selection of case studies brought together in the subsequent sections. These case studies document the different facets of Jewish music and theorize its multivalent correlation with spaces and collectives around the world. The thirty diverse chapters, conceived by an international team of thirty-one outstanding scholars, are divided into eight thematically organized sections, the first of which addresses Jewish music in various lands and territories (some without defined borders in time and space), followed by sections that focus on cities, as well selected spaces therein—ghetto, concert hall, archive, and sacred and ritual spaces. These sections, which largely look at actual and concrete spaces (roughly presented in the order of scale), are followed by the phenomenological spaces of destruction and remembrance, and shekhinah, that is, divine presence.

    Abstract: "The international conference "Psalms in Rituals from Antiquity to the Present," held on October 24-26, 2018, at the Max-Weber Kolleg in the University of Erfurt, Germany, aimed to showcase and also to build upon recent developments in what has become a very exciting field, bringing to it the distinctive perspective of the Research Centre "Dynamics of Jewish Ritual Practices in Pluralistic Contexts from Antiquity to the Present," which hosted the event. The Research Centre, which was funded from 2015 to 2020 by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), investigated the dynamic relationship of rituals in pluralistic contexts and specifically in Jewish and Christian religious traditions. While religious institutions often focus on tradition, invariability, and rootedness in history, the Research Centre has found and studied numerous examples of innovation and change in regard to religious ritual practices.     Abstract: Collaborative engagement between activist academics from Israel and Northern Ireland highlighted the challenges and potential of working through education to promote shared learning and shared life in divided societies. Following these initial explorations, the volume brought together educationalists from Europe, the United States and South Africa to widen the range of experience and insights, and broaden the base of the conversation. The result is this book on the role of shared education, not only in deeply divided societies, but also in places where minorities face discrimination, where migrants face prejudice and barriers, or where society fails to deal positively with cultural diversity. Together, the contributors challenged themselves to develop theoretical and practical paradigms, based on practical knowledge and experience, to promote activist pedagogies. Their shared purpose was to work for more humane, just and democratic societies, in which education offers genuine hope for sustained transformational change. The four main themes around which the book is organized are: educating for democratic-multicultural citizenship, models of shared learning, nurturing intercultural competencies, and reconciling dialogue in the face of conflicting narratives. The book draws on a wide range of international perspectives and insights to identify practical strategies for change in local contexts

Sein Brief gilt als die älteste schriftliche Quelle, die jüdisches Leben auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Deutschlands belegt. Er ist somit die Grundlage dafür, dass 2021 das Festjahr „1700 Jahre jüdisches Leben in Deutschland“ begangen wurde. In den 24 Beiträgen dieses Buches, die zum überwiegenden Teil auf einen Call for Papers für „Aus Politik und Zeitgeschichte“ zurückgehen, spiegelt sich ein kleines Stück der Vielfalt des jüdischen Lebens in Deutschland wider – von den frühen Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart.     Abstract: Am 17. Februar 2019 wäre Walter Grab 100 Jahre alt geworden. Sein persönlicher Werdegang spiegelt die Herausforderungen und politischen Verwerfungen des 20. Jahrhunderts wider. Als Historiker hat er wichtige Beiträge zur Demokratiegeschichte und ihrer Verbindung zur Emanzipation der Juden geleistet. Insbesondere die Französische Revolution und ihre Wirkungsgeschichte haben ihn lebenslang beschäftigt. Dabei stand auch die Frage im Mittelpunkt, weshalb die Ideen der Revolution in Deutschland nicht den gleichen Erfolg hatten wie etwa in Frankreich oder England. Diese Forschungen verknüpfte er mit einem anderen großen Thema, zu dem er ebenfalls bedeutende Beiträge geleistet hat: Dem Verhältnis zwischen der Demokratiebewegung und der Emanzipation der Juden in Europa. Im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Kolloquiums am Europa Kolleg und dem Institut für die Geschichte der deutschen Juden in Hamburg wurden seine Arbeiten gewürdigt und mit der Frage nach der Zukunft der Demokratie in Europa verknüpft werden.     Abstract: On February 17, 2019, Walter Grab would have turned 100. His personal career reflects the challenges and political upheavals of the 20th century. As a historian, he made important contributions to the history of democracy and its connection to the emancipation of the Jews. In particular, the French Revolution and its history of impact have occupied him throughout his life. He also focused on the question of why the ideas of the Revolution did not have the same success in Germany as they did, for example, in France or England. He linked this research to another major topic to which he also made significant contributions: The relationship between the democracy movement and the emancipation of Jews in Europe. In the context of an interdisciplinary colloquium at the Europa Kolleg Hamburg and the Institute for the History of German Jews in Hamburg, his work was honored and linked to the question of the future of democracy in Europe. This volume presents the results to a broader public. With a greeting by the Senator for Culture Dr. Carsten Brosda. With contributons by Carsten Brosda, Uwe Friesel, Alexander Grab, Andreas Grimmel, Arno Herzig, Yael Kupferberg and Rainer Nicolaysen.

Dieses Buch will die Erinnerung an den Holocaust in der Zusammenarbeit von Überlebenden und Zeichner:innen auf ungewöhnliche Weise bewahren und weitergeben, gerade auch an eine junge Leserschaft, indem es eingespielte Sehgewohnheiten und Bilder vom Holocaust aufbricht. Ausgewiesene Zeithistoriker:innen erklären in knappen, instruktiven Nachworten den Kontext der Geschichten, die aber auch ohne solche Erläuterungen unmittelbar und auf ergreifende Weise ein unfassbares Geschehen lebendig werden lassen.

The National Socialist era still has repercussions on society today. But how is the Shoah addressed in studies and teaching? This book examines the history of the impact of the Shoah in various settings of education and reflects on the theoretical and empirical research to date. Knowledge about and references to the Shoah continue to be transmitted between generations and at the same time are continuously updated in institutional and discursive contexts of contemporary society. This affects educators in several ways: in their own biographies and learning histories and in their subsequent teaching practice. The authors deal, among other things, with the politics of memory, the inheritance of feelings and the possibility of addressing the Shoah in various socialisation processes.

    Abstract: These essays reflect the lively debate about the sectarian movement of the Scrolls. They debate the degree to which the movement was separated from the rest of Judaism, and whether there was one or several watershed moments in the separation. Notable contributions include a cluster of essays on the Teacher of Righteousness and a thorough survey of the archaeology of Qumran. The texts are problematic in historical research because they rely on biblical stereotypes. Nonetheless, possible interpretations can be compared and degrees of probability debated. The debate is significant not only for the sect but for the nature of ancient Judaism

    Abstract: Franz Oppenheimer (1864-1943) was a prominent German sociologist, economist and Zionist activist. As a co-founder of academic sociology in Germany, Oppenheimer vehemently opposed the influence of antisemitism on the nascent field. As an expert on communal agricultural settlement, Oppenheimer co-edited the scientific Zionist journal Altneuland (1904-1906), which became a platform for a distinct Jewish participation within the racial and colonial discourses of Imperial Germany. By positioning Zionist aspirations within a German colonial narrative, Altneuland presented Zionism as an extension, instead of a rejection, of German patriotism. By doing so, the journal’s contributors hoped to recruit new supporters and model Zionism as a source of secular Jewish identity for German Jewry. While imagining future relationships between Jews, Arabs, and German settlers in Palestine, Oppenheimer and his contemporaries also reimagined the place of Jews among European nations.

Almost half the victims were Jewish, systematically destroyed in the Holocaust, the core of the Nazis’ pan-European racial purification programme. Alex Kay argues that the genocide of European Jewry can be examined in the wider context of Nazi mass killing. For the first time, Empire of Destruction considers Europe’s Jews alongside all the other major victim groups: captive Red Army soldiers, the Soviet urban population, unarmed civilian victims of preventive terror and reprisals, the mentally and physically disabled, the European Roma and the Polish intelligentsia. Kay shows how each of these groups was regarded by the Nazi regime as a potential threat to Germany’s ability to successfully wage a war for hegemony in Europe.     Abstract: The MAZEWA project is presented here as an example of the work of the Netzwerkstatt of Hillersche Villa in Zittau which aims to further develop the remembrance and commemoration work around the local Jewish cemetery. Using Heritage Interpretation as the methodological basis of the project, the cemetery is presented as a focal point to the history of the Jewish community in Zittau.

    Abstract: In Sirach and Its Contexts an international cohort of experts on the book of Sirach locate this second-century BCE Jewish wisdom text in its various contexts: literary, historical, philosophical, textual, cultural, and political. First compiled by a Jewish sage around 185 BCE, this instruction enjoyed a vibrant ongoing reception history through the middle ages up to the present, resulting in a multiform textual tradition as it has been written, rewritten, transmitted, and studied. Sirach was not composed as a book in the modern sense but rather as an ongoing stream of tradition. Heretofore studied largely in confessional settings as part of the Deuterocanonical literature, this volume brings together essays that take a broadly humanistic approach, in order to understand what an ancient wisdom text can teach us about the pursuit of wisdom and human flourishing

    Abstract: Antisemitismus wird in der Schulsozialarbeit und im Studium der Sozialen Arbeit zu wenig thematisiert. Das Buch zeigt mithilfe von Antisemitismus-Expert_innen Wege und Strategien auf, um das zu ändern. In den einzelnen Beiträgen wird es immer wieder deutlich: Antisemitismus muss in der Schule wie auch in anderen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen wahrgenommen, erkannt und bekämpft werden. Dafür benötigen wir in der Sozialen Arbeit das nötige Wissen und Können, aber auch eine antisemitismuskritische Haltung. Der internationale Ethikkodex und das daraus entwickelte Konzept Diskriminierungskritische Soziale Arbeit fordern uns auf, Strategien aus dem Konzept »Social Justice und Diversity« der Policy Practice auch in Bezug auf Antisemitismus umzusetzen.     Abstract: "In Unveiling the Hidden-Anticipating the Future: Divinatory Practices Among Jews Between Qumran and the Modern Period, Josefina Rodríguez-Arribas and Dorian Gieseler Greenbaum collect ten studies based on primary sources ranging from Qumran to the modern period and covering Europe and the Mediterranean basin. The studies show Jews practising divination (astrology, bibliomancy, physiognomy, dream requests, astral magic, etc.) and implementing the study and practice of the prognostic arts in ways that allowed Jews to make them "Jewish," by avoiding any conflict with Jewish law or halakhah. These studies focus on the Jewish components of this divination, providing specific firsthand details about the practices and their practitioners within their cultural and intellectual contexts-as well as their fears, wishes, and anxieties-using ancient scrolls and medieval manuscripts in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judaeo-Arabic.     Abstract: One quarter of all Holocaust victims lived on the territory that now forms Ukraine, yet the Holocaust there has not received due attention. This book delineates the participation of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and its armed force, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (Ukrainska povstanska armiia—UPA), in the destruction of the Jewish population of Ukraine under German occupation in 1941–44. The extent of OUN and UPA’s culpability in the Holocaust has been a controversial issue in Ukraine and within the Ukrainian diaspora as well as in Jewish communities and Israel. Occasionally, the controversy has broken into the press of North America, the EU, and Israel. Triangulating sources from Jewish survivors, Soviet investigations, German documentation, documents produced by OUN itself, and memoirs of OUN activists, it has been possible to establish that: OUN militias were key actors in the anti-Jewish violence of summer 1941; OUN recruited for and infiltrated police formations that provided indispensable manpower for the Germans' mobile killing units; and in 1943, thousands of these policemen deserted from German service to join the OUN-led nationalist insurgency, during which UPA killed Jews who had managed to survive the major liquidations of 1942.
