Abstract:
Ca. 110 of the original 2,200 Sonderkommando prisoners survived Auschwitz and the subsequent death marches; of these, ca. 40 men gave testimonies. In 1986 Greif embarked on a systematic study of the stories of the members of the Sonderkommando living in Israel, which has expanded since 1994 into a worldwide project. Testimonies of Sonderkommando members are of great importance, since these survivors are the only people who saw the killing process in Auschwitz, and they are not inclined to distort what was going on there, as are the Nazi killers. Sonderkommando members' accounts not only serve as arguments against revisionism, they also destroy myths concerning the extermination process and answer questions on relations between the Nazi staff and various groups of prisoners, resistance activities in the Sonderkommando in 1944, etc. Presents recommendations for interviewing Sonderkommando survivors.
