    Abstract: In Warschau 1909 geboren - verbrachte Ignace Strasfogel seine Kindheit in Berlin. 1923 wurde der kompositorisch begabte Junge in Franz Schrekers "Theorieklasse" aufgenommen; 1926 wurde seine 2. Klaviersonate mit dem Mendelssohn-Preis ausgezeichnet. Das Jahr 1933 brachte den jähen Abbruch seiner hoffnungsvollen Karriere in Deutschland und ein Ende seines Schaffens als Komponist. Noch Ende 1933 konnte er in die USA fliehen. Hier trat er zur Existenzsicherung als Pianist und Dirigent auf - über Jahrzehnte auch an der Metropolitan Opera in New York. Versuche, in den Jahren 1946 bis 1948 sich mit neuen Werken als Komponist in den USA zu etablieren, blieben erfolglos. Auch seine späte dezidierte Rückkehr zur Komposition ab 1983 konnte nicht ändern, dass Strasfogel in den USA nur als Dirigent wahrgenommen wurde - sein kompositorisches Œuvre blieb hier unbekannt. Seit mehr als drei Jahrzehnten beschäftigt sich Kolja Lessing mit dem Leben und Werk Strasfogels. Er selbst konzertiert weltweit als Geiger und Pianist, leitet Meisterklassen an Hochschulen und lehrt zur Zeit als Professor an der Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart. In den Jahren 1990 bis 1993 arbeitete Lessing mit Strasfogel zusammen. Er wurde zum Sammler biographischer Zeugnisse, forschte in zahlreichen Archiven und wertete Dokumente und Zeitzeugeninterviews aus.

    Abstract: William of Norwich is the name of a young boy purported to have been killed by Jews in or about 1144, thus becoming the victim of the first recorded case of such a ritual murder in Western Europe and a seminal figure in the long history of antisemitism. His story is first told in Thomas of Monmouth's The Life and Miracles of William of Norwich, a work that elaborates the bizarre allegation, invented in twelfth-century England, that Jews kidnapped Christian children and murdered them in memory and mockery of the crucifixion of Christ.In Inventing William of Norwich Heather Blurton resituates Thomas's account by offering the first full analysis of it as a specifically literary work. The second half of the twelfth century was a time of great literary innovation encompassing an efflorescence of saints' lives and historiography, as well as the emergence of vernacular romance, Blurton observes. She examines The Life and Miracles within the framework of these new textual developments and alongside innovations in liturgical and devotional practices to argue that the origin of the ritual murder accusation is imbricated as much in literary culture as it is in the realities of Christian-Jewish relations or the emergence of racially based discourses of antisemitism. Resisting the urge to interpret this first narrative of the blood libel with the hindsight knowledge of later developments, she considers only the period from about 1150-1200. In so doing, Blurton redirects critical attention away from the social and economic history of the ritual murder accusation to the textual genres and tastes that shaped its forms and themes and provided its immediate context of reception. Thomas of Monmouth's narrative in particular, and the ritual murder accusation more generally, were strongly shaped by literary convention

    Abstract: Mehr als 450 Musiker und Musikerinnen waren unter den etwa 18.000 überwiegend jüdischen Flüchtlingen aus Deutschland und Österreich, die ab 1938 vor der NS-Verfolgung in die chinesische Hafenstadt Shanghai flohen. Für die meisten war die Stadt kein Wunschziel, die zunächst teilweise, später ganz von den Japanern besetzt war. Kriegsbedingt gab es dort aber gerade keine Einreiseformalitäten. Für die Zeit bis zur Machtübernahme der Kommunisten 1949 war das Shanghaier Exil in politischer, kultureller und sozioökonomischer Hinsicht ein Ausnahmefall. In der 3,5 Millionen-Stadt lebten überwiegend Chinesen, daneben existierten aber exterritoriale Niederlassungen von Franzosen, Briten und US-Amerikanern. Außerdem gab es zahlreiche weitere Ausländergruppen, darunter russische Revolutionsflüchtlinge, Auslandsdeutsche und die Mitglieder bagdadisch-sephardischer und russisch-aschkenasischer jüdischer Gemeinden. Die Flüchtlinge hatten dabei zeitweilig mit einer verordneten Ghettoisierung, Kriegseinwirkungen, Inflation und Mangelversorgung zu kämpfen.

And yet, as surviving Jews returned from hiding, the camps, and their exiles abroad, so did their music. Transcending Dystopia tells the story of the remarkable revival of Jewish musical activity that developed in postwar Germany against all odds. Tina Frühauf provides a kaleidoscopic panorama of musical practices in worship and social life across the country to illuminate how music contributed to transitions and transformations within and beyond Jewish communities in the aftermath of the Holocaust. Drawing on newly unearthed sources from archives and private collections, this book covers a wide spectrum of musical activity – from its role in commemorations and community events to synagogue concerts and its presence on the radio – across the divided Germany until the Fall of the Wall in 1989. Frühauf's use of mobility as a conceptual framework reveals the myriad ways in which the reemergence of Jewish music in Germany was shaped by cultural transfer and exchange that often relied on the circulation of musicians, their ideas, and practices within and between communities. By illuminating the centrality of mobility to Jewish experiences and highlighting how postwar Jewish musical practices in Germany were defined by politics that reached across national borders to the United States and Israel, this pioneering study makes a major contribution to our understanding of Jewish life and culture in a transnational context.

    Abstract: This book presents an important re-theorisation of gender and anti-Semitism in medieval biblical drama. It charts conflicts staged between dramatic personae in plays that represent theological transitions, including the Incarnation, Flood, Nativity and Bethlehem slaughter. Interrogating the Christian preoccupation with what it asserted was a superseded Jewish past, it asks how models of supersession and typology are subverted when placed in dramatic dialogue with characters who experience time differently. The book employs theories of gender, performance, anti-Semitism, queer theory and periodisation to complicate readings of early theatre’s biblical matriarchs and patriarchs. Dealing with frequently taught plays as well as less familiar material, the book is essential reading for specialist, undergraduate and postgraduate researchers working on medieval performance, gender and queer studies, Jewish-Christian studies and time

    Abstract: Precarious Figurations focuses on the reception of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice in twentieth- and twenty-first-century Germany. Looking at theatrical practices and critical or scholarly discourses from the Weimar Republic to the new millennium, the book explores why the play has served simultaneously as a vehicle for the actualization of anti-Semitic tropes and as a staging ground for the critical exposure of the very logic of anti-Semitism. In particular, the study investigates how the figure of Shylock has come to be both a device in and a stumbling block for attempts to bridge the fundamental rupture in civilization brought about by the Holocaust. The careful analysis of the German reception of Merchant, and in particular of the ways of doing and reading Shylock in the context of painful German, and German-Jewish, discourses of identity and remembrance, is designed to raise fundamental questions – questions concerning not only the staging of Jewishness, the tenacity of anti-Semitism and the difficulties of Holocaust remembrance, but also the general potentials and limitations of theatrical interventions into cultural conflicts

    Abstract: Das Denken in Dichotomien war im 19. Jahrhundert weit verbreitet: männlich - weiblich, Produktion - Reproduktion, Verstand - Gefühl, Interpret - Virtuose, Heilige - Hure, deutsch - undeutsch, christlich - jüdisch, Geist - Natur usw. Wer als Musikkritiker, Musikwissenschaftler oder Biograph eine Wahrnehmung zu beschreiben und zu bewerten hatte, bediente sich gern dieser Topoi, um seine Wahrnehmung im Feld dieser Markierungen zu verorten, um Urteilen Kontur zu verleihen und sie in Rezeptionsraster einzufügen, die er auch bei seinen LeserInnen vermuten konnte. Das Anliegen dieses Buches ist es, verschiedene dieser Dichotomien zueinander ins Verhältnis zu setzen und insbesondere diejenigen Wertungen, die mit dem Gegensatzpaar männlich - weiblich verknüpft sind, mit den Wertungen anderer Dichotomien abzugleichen. Auf diese Weise ist eine Arbeit entstanden, die die Auswirkungen des Geschlechterdiskurses auf die Herausbildung von nationaler und konfessioneller Identität, Militarisierung und Antisemitismus in eindrucksvoller Weise verdeutlicht.

Kennedy, setzte sich für Bürgerrechte ein und polemisierte gegen den Vietnamkrieg. Eine tiefe persönliche Freundschaft verband ihn unter anderem mit Loki und Helmut Schmidt. In seiner aktuellen Biographie beschreibt Sven Oliver Müller das in jeder Hinsicht überreiche Leben einer Ausnahmepersönlichkeit, wobei er die schwierigen Aspekte nicht verschweigt: Eitelkeit, Arroganz, erotische Exzesse, den Hang zu Zigaretten und Alkohol, die innere Vereinsamung der späten Jahre.

    Abstract: Die 1911 erbaute Steinmeyer-Orgel der Christuskirche Mannheim ist mit 98 Registern, verteilt auf vier Manuale und Pedal, die größte denkmalgeschützte Orgel im Land Baden-Württemberg. Gemeinsam mit der ebenfalls 1911 eingeweihten Christuskirche ist die Steinmeyer-Orgel Zeugnis einer künstlerisch-technischen Meisterleis­tung des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Konzipiert im Austausch von deutschen und französischen Orgelspezialisten liegt in ihr eine Synthese von elsässischen Reformbestrebungen und romantischem Klang­ideal vor. Schon wenige Jahre nach ihrer Erbauung als Mannheimer Wunderwerk tituliert, überdauerte sie zwei Weltkriege. Mit der großen Restaurierung 2016 bis 2018, die zahlreiche technischen Reparaturen umfasste, konnte die Steinmeyer-Orgel auch wieder in den klanglichen Urzustand zurückversetzt werden. Diese Festschrift zeichnet die Geschichte dieses außergewöhnlichen Instrumentes von seiner Entstehung bis heute lebendig nach.

    Abstract: Joseph Joachim (1831-1907), of Jewish-Hungarian descent, was arguably the greatest violinist of the nineteenth century. His performing career in Berlin transformed the aesthetics and interpretation of German music. But Joachim was also a composer of virtuoso pieces, violin concertos, orchestral overtures, and chamber music works, all written between 1847 and 1864 in one intense outpouring of creativity. Katharina Uhde follows Joachim's compositional path through a changing cultural milieu. Joachim's compositions display intimate knowledge of the works of Mendelssohn, Wagner, Liszt, Schumann, and Brahms, yet he was no mere imitator. Joachim's style, classically conceived yet seasoned with a preference for dark, melancholy soundscapes and, in the earlier years, ciphers, virtuosity, and 'psychological' programmaticism, emerges as the product of various personal and socio-cultural currents: his search for national, religious, and cultural identity and a mature compositional style. Joachim's music drew on a wealth of treasures accumulated in his process of 'enculturation', which began with Mendelssohn in Leipzig. Joachim's aesthetic evolved from a deeply subjective approach, not insignificantly inspired by his muse, Gisela von Arnim. Her circle - the von Arnim and Grimm families - became Joachim's cultural and literary haven. But unforeseen events also impacted his output, among them Schumann's death, the ascent of the young Brahms, and the 'War of the Romantics'. Joachim's music throws light onto a vibrant decade, colored by realism, naturalism, new visual technologies, and emerging academic disciplines including psychology.     Abstract: Nachdem er jahrelang die Zerstörung seiner Familie im Holocaust verdrängte, beginnt der Geigenbauer Amnon Weinstein in seiner Werkstatt in Tel Aviv in den 1990er Jahren damit, Geigen zu restaurieren, die von jüdischen Musikern während des Holocausts gespielt wurden. Denn vor ihm steht ein Mann, der im Orchester von Auschwitz spielte, seine Violine über Jahrzehnte nicht angerührt hat und sie nun für seinen Enkel reparieren lassen will. Als Weinstein das Instrument öffnet, entdeckt er im Inneren Asche, die aus den Krematorien stammen muss. Grymes erzählt die Geschichte von sieben Geigen, die Weinstein in den folgenden Jahren zu neuem Glanz und Leben erweckt: Für die Musiker konnten sie ein Mittel sein, um rechtzeitig aus Europa zu fliehen, wie bei Bronislaw Hubermann, dem Gründer des Palestine Orchestra, des späteren berühmten Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Um nicht vollständig Mut und Verstand zu verlieren, wenn sie wie Erich Weininger bei seiner Odyssee nach Palästina von den Briten abgefangen und für Jahre nach Mauritius deportiert wurden. Oder wie Henry Meyer in Konzentrationslagern und Ghettos um ihr Leben spielten. Geigen konnten sogar dazu dienen, sich mit Waffen zu wehren, wie die Geschichte von Mordechai Schlein zeigt, der es schaffte, mit Hilfe eines Geigenkastens, in dem er Sprengstoff versteckte, einen Club voller SS-Offiziere in die Luft zu jagen. Und sie wurden zum einzigen Andenken an lang vermisste Verwandte, wie bei Shimon Krongeld, dessen Instrument nach seinem Tod völlig unerwartet bei seiner Familie in Jerusalem auftauchte.
