Abstract:
"Herrn Marcus' Bilderladen" was one of a series of sketches which Fontane, often ambivalent in his attitude toward Jews, sent from London to various Berlin newspapers. It was first published in 1856, and in a shortened version in 1858. In the first version, only recently rediscovered, Fontane notes that the Jews have always been middlemen, "pioneers of civilization". As against the negative stereotype of the Jewish pedlar, he lauds that pedlar's role in bringing progress - in the form of innovations and little luxuries - to the remotest areas. On a higher plane, the modest art gallery of Mr. Marcus, a Jew, transmits acquaintance with German art to the English public - the only gallery in London to do so. The second, briefer version of the sketch, published in the antisemitic "Kreuz-Zeitung", leaves out Fontane's general remarks on the positive role of the Jews. Pp. 28-35 reproduce the two versions.
