Abstract: In Christian tradition, Paul is the apostle to the nations. However, his portrayal in the Book of Acts is more nuanced. For a longer period, Paul's ministry is limited to Jews. Only from Acts 13 onwards does Paul slowly emerge as ministering to non-Jews. Yet even then, Paul remains foremost an emissary to diaspora Judaism. In its apology for Paul and his disputed way of including non-Jews into the people of God, Acts emphasises that Paul did so without diminishing the priority of Israel, as a staunch proponent of Jewish monotheism and in a way that took full account of the precarious situation of diaspora Judaism.

Abstract: This article argues that Moses Maimonides's Guide of the Perplexed first became known to a Latin Christian audience in Toledo before 1220, and that the section of it translated as the Liber de parabolis et de mandatis in 1223–24 (Guide III.29–49) is the work of Samuel ibn Tibbon and Michael Scot. Moreover, the introduction to exegesis that prefaces the translation reflects the work of ibn Tibbon. The article considers the impact early contact with the Guide had, first in Toledo, and then in Paris and Provence. The Guide presented a God who worked through the principles of Aristotelian physics, and offered an incentive to translate and study those works of Aristotle and his interpreters that illuminated these questions. Texts translated in Toledo under the inspiration of the Guide became core texts for Paris scholastics. William of Auvergne, the first Parisian scholar to use the translation, would play a key role in the trial of the Talmud. And Cardinal Romanus, to whom the Liber de parabolis et de mandatis was dedicated, is implicated in the controversy of the Guide itself among Jews at Montpellier.

Abstract: The suitability of the image of »the parting of the ways« has been challenged in recent years for understandable reasons. And yet the question about how the historical Jesus relates to the development ofadistinguishable social movement in his name remains a crucial one in the study of Christian origins. This essay provides an overview of those aspects of Jesus's career that are most relevant for this topic by charting some of the argumentative subcurrents in Jesus research. Attention then turns to the defense of three historical arguments: that Jesus was a controversial and divisive figure already in his own time, that his eschatological message about the kingdom was of such a nature that it left the spectrum of acceptable responses to it relatively narrow, and he was critical of the practices and beliefs of others in ways that made possible further group differentiation. Thus, we should stand by the conclusion of Joseph Klausner – ex nihilo nihil fit – if perhaps for reasons that differ from his.

Abstract: To affirm that Paul was a Jew did not emerge with the Paul within Judaism perspective, but only in recent decades have scholars begun not to evaluate this negatively over against Christianity. When the label »Paul within Judaism« appeared on the scene of scholarly research, it assembled under its umbrella a number of scholars who had argued over a significant period of time and from diverse angles that not only Paul himself but also his message should be seen as fully part of the range of Jewish traditions of the time. This has implications for all aspects of Pauline theologizing, including the key aspects of the assessment of time as messianic time, the role of scripture for ethnē in Christ, and God's faithfulness to his people Israel.

Abstract: This article discusses a few elements of the epistle to the Galatians and keeps two things in mind in its interpretation : the fact that Paul presents himself as apostle to the nations, and the position of the Galatians inside the Roman empire. It also includes an analysis of the relationships between Jews and non-Jews in Antiquity in order to better understand why the Galatians’ position, severely criticized by Paul, could actually make sense in the context of these communities.

Abstract: What happens if we think of "Jewish law" not as a category of Christian theology but as an element of ancient kinship construction, "ancestral custom" (Gal 1:14)? We will see more clearly how much late Second Temple Judaism shared with contemporary Mediterranean cultures. We will see how ancient ethnic essentialism—the conviction that different peoples evinced different behaviors because of their very "nature" (φύσις)—shapes Paul's thought about gentiles no less than it shaped Greek thought about Persians, or Roman thought about Greeks. We will see how Jewish law provided not the contrast to Paul's gospel but in fact much of its content. We will see that there is no reason to assume that Paul stopped living Jewishly (Ἰουδαϊκῶς) just because he wanted gentiles to stop living "paganly" (ἐθνικῶς). Abstract: Paul’s Jewishness has often acted as a pivot in scholarship about the relationship between Christianity and Judaism, especially in recent conversation about the date and duration of the so-called “Parting of the Ways.” Too little attention has been paid, however, to who represented Paul as Jewish (or not) and why. I examine the late antique reception of Paul’s ethnic identity in Epiphanius of Cyprus, heresiologist, bishop, and someone for whom representation of Jewishness often served as a foil for the manufacture of orthodoxy. I argue that for Epiphanius, when Paul’s ethnic identity is relevant at all, the focus falls on an Israelite, Benjaminite Paul. Paul’s Jewishness becomes peripheral. Building on this observation, I suggest that we must understand even the reification of Jewishness familiar to current scholarship as only one of the late antique Christian behaviors that governed identification as Israelite.

Abstract: The Provençal philosopher, biblical commentator, and grammarian Joseph Ibn Kaspi interprets some of the internal contradictions in the biblical text by using a methodology based on Maimonides’s Guide of the Perplexed. By drawing on Maimonides’s seven categories of contradictions, he argues that the first, third, fourth, and seventh type of contradictions explain inconsistencies within the Bible. He recognizes the first contradiction in the subjective influence of different biblical authors; the third contradiction in the differing parables of the resurrection of the dead; the fourth contradiction in whether or not children are punished for the sins of their parents and also in the contradictory decrees by King Ahasuerus in the Book of Esther; and the seventh contradiction in the relationship between God’s determinism and human freedom. At the same time, this article illustrates that Ibn Kaspi considers the first, third, and fourth contradictions to be only apparent contradictions, asserting that they merely appear as such to the reader. It is only the seventh type that is a true contradiction since, in Ibn Kaspi’s estimation, this was created by the biblical author with intent, in which one notion is intentionally false and the other intentionally true—thus revealing a dialectic of both freedom and determinism embedded in the biblical text.

Abstract: In this article I have attempted to put Justin’s theology in its own historical context. I would like to see Justin’s theology as a development from intra-Jewish theological discussions which took place in the Jewish-Christian confrontations where the borderlines between Judaism and Christianity were not at all clear in the first century and at the beginning of the second CE. Justin’s way of dealing with the promise given to Abraham mainly follows the Jewish apostle’s Paul’s interpretation of the Abrahamic faith in Romans 4 and Galatians 3–4. He has used Paul’s way of treating Abrahamic faith and Jesus’ saying in Mt 8:11–12, and developed more clearly a theological idea that the promise given to Abraham concerned the Christian Church from the very beginning. However, it is difficult to say that Justin represented pure supersessionistic theology because his interpretation does not nullify the intra-Jewish discussion still present in the New Testament. According to this intra-Jewish discussion, the promise of Abraham is related to Abraham’s physical descendants, the Jews who continue to practice the Mosaic Law (as expressed by Paul, the Jew, in Rom 9:1–5). The central debate in this intra-Jewish discussion concerned the question whether Jesus from Nazareth should be regarded as Messiah/Christ.

Abstract: When Paul says ‘Israel’, what or whom does he have in mind? Christian theological tradition has long answered that by ‘Israel’, a universalist Paul means ethnically non-specific ‘Christians’. But a great deal of evidence in Paul’s letters weighs against such an idea. This chapter examines, in turn, the modern myth of a post-ethnic Paul, ancient ideas about divine and human ethnicity, Paul’s language about Jewish and gentile ‘natures’, Paul’s language about Jewish and Gentile kinds of sins, Paul’s application of different Jewish laws to Jews and Gentiles, respectively, and finally Paul’s actual usage of the ethnonyms ‘Jew’ and ‘Israel’. It is concluded that, for Paul, Jews are Israel, and Israel, his own family, is the Jews. God, through Christ, at the end of the ages (mid-first century CE), was graciously calling all humanity into the redemption that he had promised to Israel long ago. Eschatological humanity thus remains two different people groups—Israel and the nations—embraced by a single salvation.

Abstract: This article describes the use of Greco-Roman and Hellenistic Jewish rhetoric and philosophy by Thomas H. Tobin, SJ, in his interpretation of the New Testament, in particular the letters of Paul. His approach highlights how Paul, as well as other NewTestament authors including the author of the Prologue of John, is part of the speculativetradition of Hellenistic Judaism. Paul is a recipient of such a tradition, as are otherHellenistic Jews like Philo. However, Tobin demonstrates how Paul not only appropriatesthis speculative tradition but transforms it in such a way that would have been consideredoffensive not only to Palestinian and Hellenistic Jews, but also to the larger Greco-Romanphilosophical traditions.

Abstract: The article shows that the Psalter as a book, that is, the Psalms in their sequence, tell a story that runs parallel to the Books of Samuel, to which the titles of several Psalms refer. The portrait of David thus sketched in the Psalter – as the Anointed who suffers and is persecuted but rescued by God – is a primary source for the Christology of the evangelists. The rescue of the Messiah from persecution and suffering leads the nations to convert to the God of Israel. This is exemplified in the sequence of Psalms 36-40.

Abstract: In Matthew and Mark, Jesus’ dialogue with his disciples immediately after his Transfiguration highlights the return of Elijah as a key to the epiphanic event. The present study contextualizes this exchange within Second Temple cosmology and eschatology and creative traditions of scribal exegesis that generated expectations of a coming eschatological high priest. An identification of John with this Elijah/High-Priest figure, together with certain traditions about Moses’ 'sanctification' in the cloud as well as the glorious high priestly vestments, positions Jesus’ own remarkable transformation upon the mountain in a new and very suggestive priestly light.

Abstract: In the Guide of the Perplexed Maimonides offers innovative readings of biblical terms and narratives through which he reveals his philosophy. Since he does not compose a comprehensive commentary on the Bible, Maimonides includes biblical exegesis throughout his philosophic work by explaining philosophic issues within the biblical text, in an effort to resolve seeming contradictions between philosophy and a literal understanding of the Bible. In the Introduction to the Guide, Maimonides presents his dual objective: to explain obscure biblical terms and parables, or verses and passages that have an external (literal, conventional) and an internal (philosophic) meaning. Maimonides maintains that the Bible has an esoteric level of philosophic truth, accessible to the intellectually qualified, which he discusses in his Guide for the discernment of those capable of understanding. Influenced by Al-Farabi, Maimonides argues that religion defers to philosophy and the Bible presents educational myths in which images represent philosophical truths for the masses. According to Sara Klein-Braslavy, Maimonides views the Garden of Eden narrative as such a myth reflecting “philosophic anthropology rather than historical narrative.” In his discussion of the episode in the Garden of Eden, Maimonides explores the human condition before and after the transgression and fulfills both objectives of his philosophic work by explaining an equivocal term and the figurative meaning of the sin and sinners in the parable – an explanation that is critical for a correct philosophical understanding of the challenging narrative.

Abstract: Present-day attempts to examine the conceptual and theological similarities between the Pauline and rabbinic understandings of the origin of sin have revisited some of the major questions raised by Sandmel in his seminal work, “Parallelomania.” What is the relationship between the sources in question (i.e. the Pauline epistles and Tannaitic literature)? And what constitutes a parallel between these corpora? Referring to Kuhn, Sandmel argues that in terms of dependency and influence it may be appropriate only to speak of “Traditionszusammenhang,” that is, a common Jewish tradition shared by Paul and the rabbis.

Abstract: One of the most intriguing textual variants in the New Testament occurs at Luke 3:22, the scene depicting the heavenly voice at Jesus’s baptism. This particular variant has broad consequences for how scholars understand the place of Luke’s Gospel within the Christological controversies that dominated the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Considering external, intrinsic, and transcriptional evidence, this article argues that perceived fears about Marcionism in proto-orthodox circles precipitated the textual corruption at Luke 3:22, prompting a theological redactor to introduce a reading that compounds Christological notions of messiah, prophet, and king in an attempt to strengthen Jesus’s links to Jewish history.

Abstract: The present article deals with a strand of ancient Jewish theological notions (in rabbinic literature, Fourth Ezra, and elsewhere) and Pauline ones. In these Jewish passages—sharing similar religious sensitivities and using similar terminology—human works stand vis-à-vis God’s mercy and his benevolence (צדקה). In some passages these categories turn out to be in tension in view of human sinfulness, since no human being can comply with the rigid standards of observing God’s commandments, resulting in the emphasis of divine mercy. Paul’s view, according to which “works (of the law)” and “grace” are mutually exclusive, is a radical intensification of this tension. Paul’s distinct ideas display the inherent dynamics of contemporary Jewish notions and reveal the inner tension within Jewish thought of the late Second Temple period, a tension that continued in Jewish writings (including rabbinic literature) after the Second Temple’s destruction.

Abstract: What made Jesus ‘news’? The key reason given in Mark and Matthew is that Jesus was an effective healer. In Q, likewise, Jesus fulfils John’s prediction of a Coming One who will baptize in Holy Spirit and fire by means of his healing mission. Luke complicates this slightly by emphasizing Jesus’ teaching on social justice, and John conceptualizes the healings as ‘signs’, but both also indicate that Jesus was news because he healed people. Thus, Galilee was in the grip of a chronic health crisis which people – both rich and poor – experienced as stress, and Jesus was news because he provided a solution. While being an exorcistic healer was not unusual, Jesus’ healing apparently was, both in its effectiveness and in its approach, involving physical touch. We now know that affective touch has a positive effect on the immune system. Disease crises in Galilee can be linked to the great density of its population, associated with widespread rural poverty and environmental degradation. Previous assessments of population in Galilee have hitherto been much too small.

Abstract: The paper examines how the figure of the biblical Moses was philosophically interpreted in medieval Jewish and Christian writings. It highlights a turning point in a new concept of prophecy and scriptural authority and suggests that this transformation was made complicated for both Jewish and Christian intellectuals by the appearance of Moses Maimonides, who was most influential in promoting the Muslim model of philosophic interpretation of prophecy, and at the same time confusingly emerged as a living manifestation of semi-biblical authority. Against Jewish exclusivist interpretation of Mosaic law as the leading polemical argument to encounter competing revelations, the first part of my paper points out a mechanism of “Jewish successionism”, i.e., the re-interpretation of the biblical Moses as an instrument for rationalizing normative paradigmatic shift. The second, main part of the paper turns to the Latin translation of Maimonides’s Guide of the Perplexed, placing it in the midst of a crucial western Latin turn into a new phase of engagement with Old Testament concept of prophecy. A short comparison between some prominent twelfth century figures and later Scholastic thought demonstrates the central role of the new Arab Aristotelianism in general, and that of Maimonides in particular. Maimonides reception among the schoolman will culminate in the writings of Meister Eckhart, exposing the full potentiality of the double appearance of the Egyptian (Rabbi) Moses.

Abstract: The new Paul within Judaism Perspective claims that Paul remained a Jew and loyal to the Torah throughout his entire life. His letters were addressed exclusively to Gentile Christians. However, all the Pauline letters do not give the impression that their contents only applied to certain groups within the different congregations. Without a doubt, Paul remained closely tied to Judaism throughout his life, but numerous texts document a break with the past and a departure towards something new. In addition, the Paul within Judaism Perspective ignores the theological standpoint and the organizational efforts required by the emerging group of Christians to establish themselves as a religious community. Any group who decides to set up its own meeting places, give itself a new name, develop new rituals and laws, organize its own communal meals, determine a new holy day and celebrate its own worship services based on a new and unique group image cannot be seen as part of another religious group. Ultimately, a new, impressive theological world comes to light, expressed in its own original style and with an extraordinary literary production. Neither the Jews, nor the strict Jewish Christians, nor the Romans of the time perceived the apostle Paul as someone who continued to consider himself and his congregations to be within the framework of Judaism.

Abstract: Spinoza's critique of Maimonides is usually read as a reflection of his relationship with his Jewish identity. Scholars have alternately argued that Spinoza inherits key aspects of his philosophy from Maimonides, thus pointing to Spinoza's sustained Jewishness even after excommunication, or that Spinoza's attack on Maimonides demonstrates the depth of his animosity towards his Jewish past. This article looks to re-orient the discussion, arguing that Spinoza's critique of Maimonides is best understood in the context of 17th-century Dutch interest in Maimonides. Dutch political Hebraists both revered Maimonides and relied heavily on his works to construct models of governance based on the ancient Hebrew polity. For Spinoza, both Dutch political Hebraists and Maimonides incorrectly ascribe eternal philosophical relevance to the Bible. Spinoza's attack on Maimonides doubly undermines Dutch political Hebraism, both by discrediting its primary source of information about ancient Israel (Maimonides) and by condemning its methodological premises, which Spinoza identifies as Maimonidean.

Abstract: This article examines the way Cyril of Alexandria interprets the Passion narrative in his commentary on the Gospel of John. It argues that besides the doctrinal, christological focus of his exegesis Cyril is concerned with a second issue: the contested masculinity of Jesus and his followers during the events of the Passion. This concern becomes clear when Cyril designates the cross-bearing Jesus as “the type of manly courage” (typos andreías). Following a survey of the current historical masculinity studies, the article examines Cyril’s interpretation of such scenes of the Johannine Passion account where Jesus is depicted as being arrested, beaten and flogged, humiliated and finally crucified – i.e., depicted in a way that might seem to contradict antique ideals of manliness. It finally analyzes Cyril’s explanations as to various “unmanly” or “manly” traits of Jesus’ adversaries, especially of the Jews, and of his followers: Peter, his beloved disciple and his Mother.

Abstract: The Apostle to the Gentiles left a winning but nonetheless difficult tradition behind. Paul taught that the Gentiles were not required to observe the Torah, but what exactly did that mean? If scholars disagree on Paul’s own view, the problem becomes even more acute when the various Jewish traditions on the Torah are observed properly. The “Old Testament” was accepted after Paul, but most of the rulings of the Torah were rejected, and few if any of the teachers could state the reasons for this. The original context, in which Paul and the other Apostles shook hands, was no longer understood once the Gentile part of the Church outnumbered the Jewish counterpart. This led writers to different, partly creative, solutions, and sometimes into a confusion which their first audience themselves could hardly understand.

Abstract: It has often been claimed that a major difference between “Jewish Christianity” and “Pauline Christianity” was the continuation or discontinuation of male genital circumcision. Evidence for the abandonment of physical circumcision within “Pauline” circles has been drawn from Paul’s opposition against gentile circumcision in the letters to the Galatians and Corinthians, as well from his imagery of “circumcision of the heart” in Romans 2. However, a closer examination of the metaphor of “circumcision of the heart” and other images of “inward circumcision” in biblical, early Jewish and post-Pauline Christian texts shows that the Pauline use of the image stands closer to the early Jewish understanding, in which “inward” and “outward” circumcision complement each other, than to later Christian readings, in which the “inward” circumcision replaces or denigrates the “outward”. The Pauline metaphor of “heart circumcision” is therefore not an image of Tora abandonment, but rather of Tora obedience and can be placed well within the possible spectrum of other contemporary Jewish understandings of the metaphor.

Abstract: The following article starts from the assumption that the proclamation of the historical Jesus has to be entirely located within Judaism of his time. It provides a brief overview of Jesus's public ministry by focusing on the interaction between his »judaïté« and his »singularité« (this conceptual pair was coined by Daniel Marguerat with reference to the historical Jesus). In the further course the attempt is made to show that the quest for the correlation of these two paradigms facilitates the perception of a fundamental theological continuity between the proclamation of the historical Jesus and the early Christian proclamation of Christ, which encompasses a no less fundamental historical discontinuity.

Abstract: This article offers a new approach to Profayt Duran's Reproach of the Gentiles (Kelimat ha-goyim), emphasizing the particular place accorded to Paul in this work and reading it against the background of converso Paulinism. This article integrates the idea of Paul the Jew in Reproach of the Gentiles with the broader ideology that Duran developed regarding the forced converts (ʾanusim) in his other writings. To some extent, based on the ambivalence in his views and his divided personality, Paul could serve as a model for those conversos now required to develop, like him, a divided identity and ambivalent positions. Thus, Profayt Duran should be considered a forerunner of converso Paulinism.

Abstract: This article addresses the question whether there are compelling reasons that suggest that the Davidic messiah in the Hebrew Bible must be a divine being, as opposed to having merely a human-heroic status. It presents a number of arguments that support a divine understanding in some of the texts that can be related to the expectation of a future Davidic messiah. It also draws attention to the fact that in many instances the divine interpretation of the relevant texts is possible or likely rather than necessary and that it is only the combination of a number of suggestive passages that allow the reader to discern the divine character of the Davidic messiah. The investigation is located in the broader context of the question of monotheism in the Hebrew Bible and draws some conclusions concerning the theological consequences of the affirmation of the divinity of the Davidic messiah.

Abstract: Like many others before him, Hilary of Poitiers was not indifferent to the wealth of Christological motifs in the figure of David. As king, prophet and shepherd, David has his place in the history of Salvation between Adam and Christ, as a representation of humanity seeking reconciliation with God. By choosing him among his brothers and preferring him to Saul, by anointing him, God gives him a central place in history and gives him a mission: to anticipate the Kingdom of Christ and be a vessel of the Holy Spirit that announces the Paschal mystery and the salvation of mankind. By transcending the traditional image of a mere prefiguration of Christ or prophet of the Messiah, the king of Israel reaches a fuller level of development and complexity in Hilary’s theology by also becoming the herald of Christians who, being anointed through baptism, are integrated into God’s mission and become joint heirs of His Kingdom.
