Abstract:
Baur, a 19th-century Protestant theologian influenced by Schleiermacher and Hegel, held that the Jews recognized Jesus as miracle worke, as did Nicodemus in the Gospel of John, but were intellectually incapable of perceiving the spirit of God in him. Their religion remained on a low level of development because it depended on the senses, in contrast to Christianity which is absolute, spiritual religion. Argues that supposedly scientific theology like Baur's is biased and lacks perspective because it fails to examine its philosophical assumptions.
