Abstract:
In front of Dan 5:1-30 a short account appears, which follows in the edition of LXX88-Dan chapter 4, in the edition of LXX967-Dan chapter 8. In MT-Dan/Th-Dan it is not attested. In analyzing this short account, the focus has been up to now on the edition of LXX88-Dan only. The question why it was prefixed to, and preserved alongside the long account – both accounts relate to the same event, display an identical beginning and are spoken in this edition by the same voice, i.e. the book narrator – has not been answered sufficiently. In this article, the focus is on its position in the edition of LXX967-Dan. It will be demonstrated that 'Dan 5:0' is best understood in connection with the previous vision in Dan 8, spoken by Daniel in the world of the book. The main thesis is that in a diachronic perspective 'Dan 5:0' was created (or inserted) in the first place when the nonmasoretic textual sequence, as witnessed by LXX967-Dan, was established. Only in the course of a textual revision, replacing Dan 5 behind Dan 4, 'Dan 5:0' was kept but became a mere 'preface'. During a further revision, adapting Greek Daniel more closely to the proto-masoretic edition, 'Dan 5:0' was finally deleted altogether.
