Abstract:
Present-day attempts to examine the conceptual and theological similarities between the Pauline and rabbinic understandings of the origin of sin have revisited some of the major questions raised by Sandmel in his seminal work, “Parallelomania.” What is the relationship between the sources in question (i.e. the Pauline epistles and Tannaitic literature)? And what constitutes a parallel between these corpora? Referring to Kuhn, Sandmel argues that in terms of dependency and influence it may be appropriate only to speak of “Traditionszusammenhang,” that is, a common Jewish tradition shared by Paul and the rabbis.
