Abstract:
In order to understand who and what was responsible for the riots against the Jews (or the "Judean community") in Alexandria in 38, analyzes the activities and whereabouts of three leading members of the Greek elite. Finds that the absence of any known members of this elite from the city at that time undermines the argument that the violence resulted from conflict over civil status. Advocates the acceptance of Philo's attribution of blame to the Roman authorities, the prefect Flaccus and the emperor Gaius. Concludes that neither a cultural war between Judaism and Hellenism nor a religious conflict between subaltern peoples, but rather Roman imperialism, helps best to illuminate the events of 38.
