    Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

Sie skizziert die marxistische Genealogie in Perecs Texten und zeigt, dass seine oulipotische Praxis nicht zu bloßen Sprachspielereien führt. Das Schreiben unter formalen Einschränkungen ist vielmehr als eine Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlichen Zwängen zu begreifen, unter denen auch die künstlerische Arbeit steht. Literarische Praxis und Gesellschaftskritik fallen dabei zusammen. Angesichts der gegenwärtigen Unschärfe im Verhältnis von Aktionismus und Kunst sind Perecs Schreibformen wegweisend.

    Abstract: The Hellenistic period was a pivotal moment in the history of the Jewish priesthood. The waning days of the Persian empire coincided with the continued ascendance of the high priest and Jerusalem temple as powerful political, cultural, and religious institutions in Judea. The Aramaic Scrolls from Qumran, only recently published in full, testify to the existence of a flourishing but previously unknown Jewish literary tradition dating from the end of Persian rule to the rise of the Hasmoneans. Throughout this book, Robert Jones analyzes how Israel’s priestly institutions are represented in these writings, and he demonstrates that they are essential for understanding the Jewish priesthood at this crucial stage in its history

    Abstract: Am 17. Februar 2019 wäre Walter Grab 100 Jahre alt geworden. Sein persönlicher Werdegang spiegelt die Herausforderungen und politischen Verwerfungen des 20. Jahrhunderts wider. Als Historiker hat er wichtige Beiträge zur Demokratiegeschichte und ihrer Verbindung zur Emanzipation der Juden geleistet. Insbesondere die Französische Revolution und ihre Wirkungsgeschichte haben ihn lebenslang beschäftigt. Dabei stand auch die Frage im Mittelpunkt, weshalb die Ideen der Revolution in Deutschland nicht den gleichen Erfolg hatten wie etwa in Frankreich oder England. Diese Forschungen verknüpfte er mit einem anderen großen Thema, zu dem er ebenfalls bedeutende Beiträge geleistet hat: Dem Verhältnis zwischen der Demokratiebewegung und der Emanzipation der Juden in Europa. Im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Kolloquiums am Europa Kolleg und dem Institut für die Geschichte der deutschen Juden in Hamburg wurden seine Arbeiten gewürdigt und mit der Frage nach der Zukunft der Demokratie in Europa verknüpft werden. Der Band stellt die Ergebnisse einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit vor. Mit einem Grußwort des Kultursenators Dr. Carsten Brosda. Mit Beiträgen von Carsten Brosda, Uwe Friesel, Alexander Grab, Andreas Grimmel, Arno Herzig, Yael Kupferberg und Rainer Nicolaysen.
    Abstract: On February 17, 2019, Walter Grab would have turned 100. His personal career reflects the challenges and political upheavals of the 20th century. As a historian, he made important contributions to the history of democracy and its connection to the emancipation of the Jews. In particular, the French Revolution and its history of impact have occupied him throughout his life. He also focused on the question of why the ideas of the Revolution did not have the same success in Germany as they did, for example, in France or England. He linked this research to another major topic to which he also made significant contributions: The relationship between the democracy movement and the emancipation of Jews in Europe. In the context of an interdisciplinary colloquium at the Europa Kolleg Hamburg and the Institute for the History of German Jews in Hamburg, his work was honored and linked to the question of the future of democracy in Europe. This volume presents the results to a broader public. With a greeting by the Senator for Culture Dr. Carsten Brosda. With contributons by Carsten Brosda, Uwe Friesel, Alexander Grab, Andreas Grimmel, Arno Herzig, Yael Kupferberg and Rainer Nicolaysen.

    Abstract: Im Dezember 321 teilte der römische Kaiser Konstantin den Kölner Ratsherren mit, dass es fortan gesetzlich möglich sei, auch jüdische Bürger in den Rat zu berufen. Sein Brief gilt als die älteste schriftliche Quelle, die jüdisches Leben auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Deutschlands belegt. Er ist somit die Grundlage dafür, dass 2021 das Festjahr „1700 Jahre jüdisches Leben in Deutschland“ begangen wurde. In den 24 Beiträgen dieses Buches, die zum überwiegenden Teil auf einen Call for Papers für „Aus Politik und Zeitgeschichte“ zurückgehen, spiegelt sich ein kleines Stück der Vielfalt des jüdischen Lebens in Deutschland wider – von den frühen Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart. Dieses Buch will die Erinnerung an den Holocaust in der Zusammenarbeit von Überlebenden und Zeichner:innen auf ungewöhnliche Weise bewahren und weitergeben, gerade auch an eine junge Leserschaft, indem es eingespielte Sehgewohnheiten und Bilder vom Holocaust aufbricht. Ausgewiesene Zeithistoriker:innen erklären in knappen, instruktiven Nachworten den Kontext der Geschichten, die aber auch ohne solche Erläuterungen unmittelbar und auf ergreifende Weise ein unfassbares Geschehen lebendig werden lassen.

    Abstract: "In Language Contact, Colonial Administration, and the Construction of Identity in Ancient Israel, Boyd addresses a long-standing critical issue in biblical scholarship: how does the production of the Bible relate to its larger historical, linguistic, and cultural settings in the ancient Near East? Using theoretical advances in the study of language contact, he examines in detail the sociolinguistic landscape during the Assyrian, Babylonian, and Achaemenid periods. Boyd then places the language and literature of Ezekiel and Isaiah in this sociolinguistic landscape. Language Contact, Colonial Administration, and the Construction of Identity in Ancient Israel offers the first book-length incorporation of language contact theory with data from the Bible. As a result, it allows for a reexamination of the nature of contact between biblical authors and a series of Mesopotamian empires beginning with Assyria."--

    Abstract: In The Theological Profile of the Peshitta of Isaiah , Attila Bodor explores theological elements in the book of Isaiah as represented in the Peshitta. Through a close study of its interpretative renderings, the author shows that this lesser-known ancient version is not only an important witness to textual history and a repository of early exegetical traditions but also testifies to the beliefs of the early Syriac-speaking community from which the Peshitta emerged. In the monograph, sixty-three Peshitta divergences from the Hebrew version of Isaiah are collected and analyzed in order to illustrate the theological implications and the impact of these divergent renderings on the interpretation and reception of the major Isaianic themes that treat God, the Messiah, and the people of God

For the first time, Empire of Destruction considers Europe’s Jews alongside all the other major victim groups: captive Red Army soldiers, the Soviet urban population, unarmed civilian victims of preventive terror and reprisals, the mentally and physically disabled, the European Roma and the Polish intelligentsia. Kay shows how each of these groups was regarded by the Nazi regime as a potential threat to Germany’s ability to successfully wage a war for hegemony in Europe.     Abstract: Apocryphal traditions, often shared by Jews and Christians, have played a significant role in the history of both religions. The 26 essays in this volume examine regional and linguistic developments in Ethiopia, Egypt, Syria, Armenia, the Balkans, and Italy. Dissenting groups, such as the Samaritans, followers of John the Baptist, and mediæval dualists are also discussed. Furthermore, the book looks at interactions of Judaism and Christianity with the religions of Iran. Seldom verified or authorized, and frequently rejected by Churches, apocryphal texts had their own process of development, undergoing significant transformations. The book shows how apocryphal accounts could become a medium of literary and artistic elaboration and mythological creativity. Local adaptations of Biblical stories indicate that copyists, authors and artists conceived of themselves as living not in a post-Biblical era, but in direct continuity with Biblical personages

Dabei geht es um Themen wie Biopolitik, Eugenik und Zwangssterilisation, die Judenverfolgung in der Vorkriegszeit, die Morde im Rahmen der „Aktion T4“, die Krankenmorde in den Konzentrationslagern und im besetzten Polen, die „Aktion Reinhardt“ sowie die justizielle Ahndung der Verbrechen nach 1945. Die Untersuchungen erweitern unser Verständnis von den Verbrechen im Nationalsozialismus insgesamt und speziell zum Verhältnis von „Euthanasie“ und Holocaust.

    Abstract: One quarter of all Holocaust victims lived on the territory that now forms Ukraine, yet the Holocaust there has not received due attention. This book delineates the participation of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and its armed force, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (Ukrainska povstanska armiia—UPA), in the destruction of the Jewish population of Ukraine under German occupation in 1941–44. The extent of OUN and UPA’s culpability in the Holocaust has been a controversial issue in Ukraine and within the Ukrainian diaspora as well as in Jewish communities and Israel. Occasionally, the controversy has broken into the press of North America, the EU, and Israel. Triangulating sources from Jewish survivors, Soviet investigations, German documentation, documents produced by OUN itself, and memoirs of OUN activists, it has been possible to establish that: OUN militias were key actors in the anti-Jewish violence of summer 1941; OUN recruited for and infiltrated police formations that provided indispensable manpower for the Germans' mobile killing units; and in 1943, thousands of these policemen deserted from German service to join the OUN-led nationalist insurgency, during which UPA killed Jews who had managed to survive the major liquidations of 1942.

    Abstract: Antisemitismus ist wieder sichtbar, teils offen, teils versteckt hinter "unbedachten " Äußerungen und Israelkritik. Doch wo beginnt der Antisemitismus, und wie neu ist, was wir heute erleben? Peter Schäfer beschreibt klar und konzise, wie sich seit der Antike antisemitische Stereotype verbreiteten, zu Verfolgung und Vernichtung führten und auch nach der Shoah virulent sind. Schon in der vorchristlichen Antike gab es Judenhass, Ghettos und Pogrome, doch erst die neutestamentlichen Schriften schufen mit ihrer Gegnerschaft zum Judentum die Voraussetzungen für Ritualmordlegenden und Verfolgungen im christlichen Mittelalter. Luther rief zur Auslöschung der "Teufelskinder" auf, die Aufklärer fanden das Judentum unvernünftig, Wissenschaftler begründeten den Judenhass rassistisch, und allzu viele waren bereit, sich an der "Endlösung der Judenfrage" zu beteiligen oder schauten lieber weg. Man könnte meinen, dass der Schock des Massenmordes heilsam war, doch Antizionismus und rechte Ideologien dringen seit Jahren mit antisemitischem Gepäck in die Mitte der Gesellschaft vor und bereiten den Boden für neue Gewalt. Peter Schäfers Buch ist Pflichtlektüre für alle, die besser verstehen wollen, warum der Antisemitismus so alt und zugleich so aktuell ist und was er für Juden in der Nachbarschaft, in Israel und überall auf der Welt bedeutet

    Abstract: Am 6. Mai 1939 wurde mit einem Festakt auf der Wartburg in Eisenach das »Institut zur Erforschung und Beseitigung des jüdischen Einflusses auf das deutsche kirchliche Leben« auf der Grundlage einer Entschließung von elf evangelischen Landeskirchen gegründet. Das Institut war eng mit der Ideologie und Organisation der aus Thüringen stammenden »Kirchenbewegung Deutsche Christen« verbunden. Ziel dieser kirchenpolitischen Bewegung war es, den christlichen Glauben und die Institution der Kirche den Vorgaben der nationalsozialistischen Weltanschauung anzupassen. Die »Forschungsarbeiten« des kirchlichen »Entjudungsinstituts« dienten dazu, die Ausgrenzungs- und Verfolgungspolitik der nationalsozialistischen Machthaber gegenüber den Juden zu unterstützen und den Antisemitismus als Grundpfeiler der nationalsozialistischen Rasseideologie zu legitimieren. [»De-Jewification« of Theology and Church. The Eisenach "Institute for the Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life" 1939-1945 On 6 May 1939, at a ceremony at the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, the »Institute for the Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life« was founded on the basis of a resolution passed by eleven Protestant regional churches. The Institute was closely connected with the ideology and organization of the »Church Movement German Christians«, which originated in Thuringia. The aim of this church political movement was to adapt the Christian faith and the institution of the church to the guidelines of the National Socialist world view. The »research work« of the ecclesiastical »Institute for De-Jewification« served to support the exclusion and persecution policy of the National Socialist rulers towards the Jews and to legitimize anti-Semitism as the cornerstone of the National Socialist racial ideology and to purify the Protestant Church from all alleged Jewish influences.

    Abstract: This book aims to create an integral picture of the social, economic and cultural history of the Jews in Lithuania during the course of more than six hundred years – from the Middle Ages to the 1990s. It is a translation of the study “Lietuvos žydai. Istorinė studija” (Engl. “Lithuanian Jews. Historical study”), published in Lithuanian in 2012. The Book was written by an interna-tional group of scholars from Lithuania, Israel, the United States of America and Germany. The world of Lithuanian Jewry is reconstructed through different aspects of the development of community and society: demography, social and economic activity, self-government institutions of the community, cultural and religious movements, literature and the press, education, discriminative policy of the authorities and relations with the dominant church, segregation, assimilation and changes of identity, anti-Judaism and anti-Semitism, and the Holocaust

    Abstract: Postkoloniale Studien zählen aktuell zu den einflussreichsten kritischen Interventionen, was angesichts der massiven Effekte des Kolonialismus nicht verwundern kann. Postkoloniale Theorie zielt darauf ab, die verschiedenen Ebenen kolonialer Begegnungen zu analysieren und dabei die sozio-historischen Interdependenzen und Verflechtungen zwischen den Ländern des »Südens« und des »Nordens« herauszuarbeiten. Diese Einführung erschließt das weite Feld postkolonialer Theoriebildung über eine kritische Debatte der Schriften der drei prominentesten postkolonialen Stimmen – Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak und Homi Bhabha. Die aktualisierte dritte Auflage unterzieht insbesondere die neuen Schriften Spivaks und Bhabhas einer kritischen Würdigung, setzt sich aber auch mit den gegenwärtigen Diskussionen um Globalisierung, Religion, Menschenrechte und Dekolonisierung auseinander.

    Abstract: "Gersonides' Afterlife is the first full-scale treatment of the reception of one of the greatest scientific minds of medieval Judaism: Gersonides (1288-1344). An outstanding representative of the Hebrew Jewish culture that then flourished in southern France, Gersonides wrote on mathematics, logic, astronomy, astrology, physical science, metaphysics and theology, and commented on almost the entire bible. His strong-minded attempt to integrate these different areas of study into a unitary system of thought was deeply rooted in the Aristotelian tradition and yet innovative in many respects, and thus elicited diverse and often impassionate reactions.     Abstract: "The authors publish a previously unedited Regimen of Health attributed to Avenzoar (Ibn Zuhr), translated at Montpellier in 1299 in a collaboration between a Jewish philosopher and a Christian surgeon, the former translating the original Arabic into their shared Occitan vernacular, the latter translating that into Latin. They use manuscript evidence to argue that the text was produced in two stages, first a quite literal version, then a revision improved in style and in language adapted to contemporary European medicine. Such collaborative translations are well known, but the revelation of the inner workings of the translation process in this case is exceptional. A separate Hebrew translation by the philosopher (also edited here) gives independent evidence of the lost Arabic original." --

    Abstract: Die vielfältigen Transformationen der Bibel in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart werden exemplarisch an jüdischen und christlichen Transformationen der Davidfigur und des Opfermotivs diskutiert. Die Autorinnen und Autoren dieses Bandes verstehen biblische Transformationen als Veränderungsprozesse von Referenzbereich und Aufnahmebereich, die in der Bibel selbst beginnen. Die im Anschluss an Untersuchungen innerbiblischer Transformationsprozesse behandelten literarischen, musikalischen und (religions-)didaktischen Transformationen von Davidfigur und Opfermotiv reichen vom Hochmittelalter bis in die Gegenwart und berücksichtigen Texte und Musikstücke jüdischer wie christlicher Provenienz. Gerade die Spannung zwischen zwei Narrationen mit anscheinend nur wenig Gemeinsamkeiten ermöglicht einen Blick auf die Unterschiede von Transformationsprozessen biblischer Figuren und Motive

    Abstract: Versöhnung wird aus jüdischer Perspektive genau dann notwendig, wenn der einzelne Mensch oder die Gruppe die gebotene Lebensordnung überschreitet. Dann gilt es Mittel und Wege an der Hand zu haben oder zu finden, um in diese zurückkehren zu können. Schon zur Zeit des Alten Israel wurde ein Tag im Jahr zu eben jenem Zweck formalisiert, der sogenannte „Tag der Versöhnung“ (Jom Kippur).Dieser Band untersucht im Kontext des jüdischen Versöhnungstages das Versöhnungsgeschehen in verschiedenen Relationen: Gott-Mensch, Mensch-Mensch und mit Blick auf die Gegenwart auch die Versöhnung des Menschen mit sich selbst.     Abstract: In Dead Sea Media Shem Miller offers a groundbreaking media criticism of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Although past studies have underappreciated the crucial roles of orality and memory in the social setting of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Miller convincingly demonstrates that oral performance, oral tradition, and oral transmission were vital components of everyday life in the communities associated with the Scrolls. In addition to being literary documents, the Dead Sea Scrolls were also records of both scribal and cultural memories, as well as oral traditions and oral performance. An examination of the Scrolls’ textuality reveals the oral and mnemonic background of several scribal practices and literary characteristics reflected in the Scrolls

    Abstract: In The Jerusalem Temple in Diaspora, Jonathan Trotter shows how different diaspora Jews’ perspectives on the distant city of Jerusalem and the temple took shape while living in the diaspora, an experience which often is characterized by complicated senses of alienation from and belonging to an ancestral homeland and one’s current home.     Abstract: Despite scholars’ ongoing historical and sociological investigations into the ancient family, the right and the status of the firstborn son have been rarely explored by NT scholars, and this topic has not attracted the careful attention that it deserves. This work offers a study of the meaning of the firstborn son in the New Testament paying specific attention to the concept of primogeniture in the Old Testament and Jewish literature. This study argues that primogeniture was a unique institution in Jewish society, and that the title of the firstborn son indicates his access to the promise of Israel, and is associated with the right of the inheritance (i.e., primogeniture) including the Land and the special status of Israel

Askin examines scribal culture as a framework for analysing features of textual referencing throughout the Book of Ben Sira (c.198-175 BCE), revealing new insights into how Ben Sira wrote his book of wisdom. Although the title of "scribe" is regularly applied to Ben Sira, this designation presents certain interpretive challenges. Through comparative analysis, Askin contextualizes the sage's compositional style across historical, literary, and socio-cultural spheres of operation. New light is shed on Ben Sira's text and early Jewish textual reuse. Drawing upon physical and material evidence of reading and writing, Askin reveals the dexterity and complexity of Ben Sira's sustained textual reuse.     Abstract: "The Menorah, the ancient seven-armed candelabrum, was the most important Jewish symbol both in the Land of Israel and the Diaspora. The menorah was the most important of the Temple vessels and it also came to symbolize Judaism, when it was necessary to distinguish synagogues and Jewish tombs from Christian or pagan structures. This book is a continuation of Hachlili's earlier comprehensive study, The Menorah, the Ancient Seven-armed Candelabrum: Origin, Form and Significance. Brill, 2001. It entails the compilation and study of the material of the past two decades, presenting the theme of the menorah, focusing on its development, form, meaning, significance, and symbolism in antiquity"--

    Abstract: In Style and Context of Old Greek Job , Marieke Dhont offers a new understanding of the linguistic and stylistic diversity in the Septuagint corpus. To this end, the author innovatively uses Polysystem Theory, which has been developed in the field of modern literary studies. After discussing the appropriateness of a systemic approach to understanding Jewish-Greek literature, the author reflects on the Jewishness of Greek-language texts. Dhont then presents a thorough literary analysis of the Old Greek version of the book of Job. On this basis, she explains the dynamics that produced the translation of Old Greek Job and its position within the development of a Jewish-Greek literary tradition

    Abstract: Dieses Studienbuch stellt die "Geschichte Israels" von den Anfängen bis zum Bar-Kochba-Aufstand 132-135 n. Chr. dar. Das für Exegese und Theologiestudium unverzichtbare Wissen vermittelt der Autor verständlich und vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Forschung. Er zieht für seine Darstellung alle verfügbaren Quellen heran. Exemplarisch wird aufgezeigt, wie diese Quellen zu interpretieren sind und wo die Grenzen der Rekonstruktion von Geschichte liegen. Dazu führt er in den Stand der archäologischen und historischen Forschung ein und bezieht die Ergebnisse kritisch auf die biblische Darstellung. So entsteht ein Bild der Geschichte des antiken Israel im Kontext der südlichen Levante, das manches Mal vertraut, oft aber auch frisch und unerwartet daherkommt. Für die Neuauflage wurden zahlreiche Abschnitte überarbeitet und neueste Literatur ergänzt. Der Charakter als Studienbuch wurde noch einmal methodisch reflektiert und verstärkt.

    Abstract: "In The Dangerous Duty of Rebuke Matthew Goldstone explores the ways in which religious leaders within early Jewish and Christian communities conceived of the obligation to rebuke their fellows based upon the biblical verse: "Rebuke your fellow but do not incur sin" (Leviticus 19:17). Analyzing texts from the Bible through the Talmud and late Midrashim as well as early Christian monastic writings, he exposes a shift from asking how to rebuke in the Second Temple and early Christian period, to whether one can rebuke in early rabbinic texts, to whether one should rebuke in later rabbinic and monastic sources. Mapping these observations onto shifting sociological concerns, this work offers a new perspective on the nature of interpersonal responsibility in antiquity"--

    Abstract: The essays in Reading the Gospel of John’s Christology as Jewish Messianism: Royal, Prophetic, and Divine Messiahs seek to interpret John’s Jesus as part of Second Temple Jewish messianic expectations. The Fourth Gospel is rarely considered part of the world of early Judaism. While many have noted John’s Jewishness, most have not understood John’s Messiah as a Jewish messiah. The Johannine Jesus, who descends from heaven, is declared the Word made flesh, and claims oneness with the Father, is no less Jewish than other messiahs depicted in early Judaism. John’s Jesus is at home on the spectrum of early Judaism’s royal, prophetic, and divine messiahs
