Abstract:
A revised version of a lecture delivered in Oxford, October 1991. Discusses the symbolic meanings of Auschwitz for different peoples (Europeans, Jews, Gypsies) who experienced the Second World War. Mentions the collapse of the communist regimes and the Carmelite Convent controversy which impel one to review its meaning. Calls for the "demythologization" of Auschwitz and of the history of the Holocaust, particularly by Poles, Germans, and Jews. Suggests that it is necessary to ensure, from a Jewish point of view, that Auschwitz is sacralized rather than left to rot.
