Abstract:
Hitler's obsessive determination to destroy the Jews had the tone of a religious, messianic mission. Argues that the source of this tone may be found in Wagner's influence. A reading of Wagner's ideological prose works and libretti shows that they reflect not merely a personal antisemitism but a world view, similar to that of Nietzsche. They are religious allegories of the struggle between the pure-blooded, instinctual, and amoral Aryan hero, representative of Germany, and the treacherous Jew who seeks to poison the hero through Judaeo-Christian morality. In "Parsifal" Wagner elaborated these themes under the influence of Schopenhauer's atheistic philosophy and Gobineau's racism. Wagner sought a redeemer of the Aryan race and of humanity, and Hitler cast himself in this role.
