Abstract:
Describes various ways in which the Holocaust has been remembered in West Germany - by politicians (e.g. Willy Brandt and Helmut Schmidt), writers (e.g. Günter Grass), and in the media and the arts. Several of the works cited attack a society which stressed taking orders as a paramount value. Notes that Christian churches of all denominations have supported the process of confronting the Holocaust on all levels of German society. Mentions Germany's special relationship with the State of Israel and German press support for Israel. States that the Holocaust as the ultimate disastrous expression of Nazism is a living part of the collective consciousness of the Federal Republic, with little evidence of militarism or antisemitism.
