Abstract:
The officers of the SS and Police placed a high value on general and ideological schooling. The recruits had already been prepared for their tasks at school, in the Hitler Youth, and in the labor corps; now they were to be strengthened in the Nazi outlook throughout their years of service. Several SS and Police departments provided material, including films; the schooling itself was organized by local commanders. The men were given no concrete instructions for the treatment of Jews, but rather the framework within which they were to act and which would enable them to feel that their actions were normal and necessary. Officers were to foster group spirit, to see to it that the men did not become brutalized, and after every traumatic action (deportation, massacre) to stage a social and cultural evening to enable them to suppress the trauma. The mass murder of the Jews of Eastern Europe was proof of the efficacy of the schooling.
