Abstract:
Having strictly limited Jewish immigration to Palestine in May 1939, Britain was genuinely interested in finding another solution to the Jewish refugee problem. British colonies in Africa were marked as refuges for German Jews. Among these, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) was seen as the best option. Its gates remained open during the entire prewar and wartime periods. However, only 250 Jews actually went to Northern Rhodesia, mainly in 1939-41. Among the obstacles were lack of information on the Rhodesian option, emigration obstructions of the Gestapo, and refugees' fear of the "dark continent". After 1939 emigration from Germany was much more difficult. Focuses on the role played by Colonial Secretary Malcolm MacDonald in attempts to find ways to solve the refugee problem.
