Abstract:
Contends that the generally successful German political and military actions during 1939-41 escalated the adoption of extreme solutions by the political and military high echelons for the "Jewish question" - beginning with deportation and resettlement, and ending with mass murder and genocide. The available facts regarding the decision-making process suggest Hitler's constant and active involvement (despite the vagueness of his utterances), as well as his inclination to radicalize actions against the Jews in order to implement the "Final Solution". Once Hitler had legitimized genocide as a necessary solution, there appeared the executioners whose experiences in the war prepared them to see the Jews as the ultimate enemy who must be destroyed.
