Abstract:
Based on polls and the Israeli press, analyzes Israelis' ambivalence toward Germany. Suggests that mistrust of Germany is based mainly, but not solely, on the Holocaust. It was reinforced by German aid given to Iraq during the Gulf War, and by xenophobic incidents in Germany which are (mistakenly) perceived to be directed mainly against Jews. Israelis who went through the Holocaust have a more differentiated view of Germany than those who did not (who were taught to associate Germany with the Holocaust). The ambivalence even extends to Israelis' attitudes to German football. Finds no significant difference among different sectors of the Israeli population, with the exception of religious and secular persons. The religious overwhelmingly reject normal relations with Germany, in contrast to only a minority of the secular.
