    Abstract: In Essen im antiken Judentum und Urchristentum untersucht Christina Eschner die Auseinandersetzungen zum jüdischen Gesetz innerhalb des Urchristentums vor dem Hintergrund vergleichbarer Diskurse im antiken Judentum. Ziel ist es, die urchristliche Praxis des Gesetzes in ihrem größeren Kontext darzustellen und ihr gegebenenfalls einen bestimmten Platz im facettenreichen Bild der zeitgenössischen jüdischen Strömungen zuzuweisen. Dabei finden Schriften aus Qumran, dem griechischsprachigen und dem rabbinischen Judentum Berücksichtigung. Der Fokus liegt auf Vorschriften zu verbotenen Speisen, zur Tischgemeinschaft und zur erlaubten Art und Weise der Nahrungsaufnahme. Auch pagane Traditionen werden einbezogen. Damit ist diese Studie besonders interdisziplinär ausgerichtet. Sie bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle zwischen Themenfeldern der neutestamentlichen Wissenschaft, der Altphilologie, der Alten Geschichte und der Judaistik. Sie kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass die urchristlichen Diskurse zum Essen nicht auf eine vollständige Abschaffung der entsprechenden jüdischen Gesetzesanordungen zielen. In Essen im antiken Judentum und Urchristentum Christina Eschner examines the Early Christian disputes about the Jewish law against the background of Ancient Jewish discourses on commands of the law, in order to situate the Early Christian practice of the law within its broader context. Jewish sources include the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish writings in Greek and early rabbinic texts. This study focusses on rules concerning prohibited food, table fellowship and the permissible way of food intake. Pagan traditions are also considered. Thus, the work has an interdisciplinary orientation, discussing issues at the junction of New Testament studies, Classics, Ancient History and Jewish studies. It concludes that Early Christian food discourses do not aim for the complete abolition of the law

    Abstract: In Private Associations and Jewish Communities in the Hellenistic and Roman Cities, Benedikt Eckhardt brings together a group of experts to investigate a problem of historical categorization. Traditionally, scholars have either presupposed that Jewish groups were “Greco-Roman Associations” like others or have treated them in isolation from other groups. Attempts to begin a cross-disciplinary dialogue about the presuppositions and ultimate aims of the respective approaches have shown that much preliminary work on categories is necessary. This book explores the methodological dividing lines, based on the common-sense assumption that different questions require different solutions. Re-introducing historical differentiation into a field that has been dominated by abstractions, it provides the debate with a new foundation. Case studies highlight the problems and advantages of different approaches

    Abstract: S. C. Daley’s book, The Textual Basis of English Translations of the Hebrew Bible , moves us beyond existing uncertainties about the textual basis of modern Bible translations to a fresh understanding of the text-critical constitution of well-known English translations of the past four hundred years. Most translations depart from the Masoretic Text selectively, and in-depth analysis of their textual decisions leads (1) to the identification of distinct periods in the textual history of the English Bible, (2) to a classification of the translations by eclectic type, and (3) to the observation that each translation is ultimately unique from a text-critical perspective. The study then revisits the topic of the text to be translated in Bibles intended for the wider public

    Abstract: Sabrina Schütz untersucht im vorliegenden Band die Vorstellungen von ›Nation‹ und ›Nationalismus‹ im frühen deutschen zionistischen Diskurs vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Im Fokus der Studie stehen eine Reihe von markanten politisch-ideologischen Themenfeldern und Schlüsseldebatten aus der zionistischen Wochenzeitung Jüdische Rundschau, die mit Konzepten der modernen Nationalismus- und Zionismusforschung sowie mit Ansätzen aus der postkolonialen Kritik untersucht werden. In enger Anlehnung an Homi K. Bhabhas Hybriditätstheorie geht die Autorin von der These aus, dass der deutsche Zionismus eine eigentümliche, ›hybride‹ Variante von Nationalismus entwickelte, die einerseits ausgiebig auf die Traditionsbestände des deutschen Nationalismus zurückgriff, und andererseits sich zugleich davon distanzierte. The present study explores concepts of ‘nation’ and ‘nationalism’ in early German Zionism before the First World War. Doing so, it focuses on a series of crucial issues and keynote debates in the contemporary Zionist press, particularly in the prominent Zionist newspaper Jüdische Rundschau. The introduction adapts current theories of Zionism, nationalism and postcolonial studies so as to provide a methodological framework of analysis for Diaspora Zionism. It argues that German Zionism is best understood in line with Homi K. Bhabha’s notion of hybridity as it was characterized by a close affinity to various forms of German nationalism, while, at the same time, by its own distinctive – albeit contradictory or counternarrative – transformations of these adapted ideas.

    Abstract: Despite scholars’ ongoing historical and sociological investigations into the ancient family, the right and the status of the firstborn son have been rarely explored by NT scholars, and this topic has not attracted the careful attention that it deserves. This work offers a study of the meaning of the firstborn son in the New Testament paying specific attention to the concept of primogeniture in the Old Testament and Jewish literature. This study argues that primogeniture was a unique institution in Jewish society, and that the title of the firstborn son indicates his access to the promise of Israel, and is associated with the right of the inheritance (i.e., primogeniture) including the Land and the special status of Israel

    Abstract: "This book discusses the "long fifteenth century" in Iberian history, between the 1391 pogroms and the forced conversions of Aragonese Muslims in 1526, a period characterized by persecutions, conversions and social violence, on the one hand, and cultural exchange, on the other. It was a historical moment of unstable religious ideas and identities, before the rigid turn taken by Spanish Catholicism by the middle of the sixteenth century; a period in which the physical and symbolic borders separating the three religions were transformed and redefined but still remained extraordinarily porous. The collection argues that the aggressive tone of many polemical texts has until now blinded historiography to the interconnected nature of social and cultural intimacy, above all in dialogue and cultural transfer in later medieval Iberia.     Abstract: "Guided by awareness of the problematic relationship between polemical text and history, Opponents and Identity in Philippians seeks to establish a historical context for the letter to the Philippians. The study re-evaluates the relationship between Paul and the Jerusalem-based Christ-believing community from the time of the Jerusalem meeting and the Antioch incident. A more detailed analysis centers on how this relationship is reflected in Philippians. The book argues that Paul was continuously on problematic terms with the Jerusalem community, which means that they are the Jewish Christ-believing opponents referred to at several places in Philippians as well.     Abstract: Over the last decades, studies on cultural memory have taken a 'spectral turn'. They have explored the potential of haunting metaphors for addressing past instances of violence that affect present cultural realities. Zuzanna Dziuban contributes to the discussions on the figure of the ghost by enquiring into its culturally and historically located modality: the emergence of Jewish ghosts in contemporary Polish popular culture, literature and critical art. Locating this new interest in Jewish ghosts on the map of other Polish (and Jewish) ghostologies, this study seeks to explore the cultural and political functions of post-Holocaust haunted imaginaire.

    Abstract: explores the various ways that ancient Jewish and Christian writers engaged with and interpreted the Hebrew Bible in antiquity, focusing on physical mechanics of rewriting and reuse, modes of allusion and quotation, texts and text forms, text collecting, and the development of interpretative traditions. Contributions examine the use of the Hebrew Bible and its early versions in a variety of ancient corpora, including the Septuagint, Dead Sea Scrolls, New Testament, and Rabbinic works, analysing the vast array of textual permutations that define ancient engagement with Jewish scripture. This volume argues that the processes of reading and cognition, influenced by the physical and intellectual contexts of interpretation, are central aspects of ancient biblical interpretation that are underappreciated in current scholarship

    Abstract: The scientific debates on border crossings and cultural exchange between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have much increased over the last decades. Within this context, however, little attention has been given to the biblical Exodus, which not only plays a pivotal role in the Abrahamic religions, but also is a master narrative of a border crossing in itself. Sea and desert are spaces of liminality and transit in more than just a geographical sense. Their passage includes a transition to freedom and initiation into a new divine community, an encounter with God and an entry into the Age of law. The volume gathers twelve articles written by leading specialists in Jewish and Islamic Studies, Theology and Literature, Art and Film history, dedicated to the transitional aspects within the Exodus narrative. Bringing these studies together, the volume takes a double approach, one that is both comparative and intercultural. How do Jewish, Christian and Islamic texts and images read and retell the various border crossings in the Exodus story, and on what levels do they interrelate? By raising these questions the volume aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of contact points between the various traditions

    Abstract: This book is the completest work about life and works of Joseph Penso de Vega, the most prominent author of the Jewish Community of Amsterdam in the XVIIth century. This volume presents a very interdisciplinary study, because of the frequent contacts that the writer had among diasporas and the cultural relationship with Christians and laics. That meant a very intense cultural and literary exchange that Penso knew to represent it in his texts. In this sense, this study offers a very exact portrait –never made before–, not only about his cultural production but also about him as nexus between diasporas concerning religious aspects, History of culture and history of ideas, aspects ignored before but basics to understand his works.

    Abstract: Im Zuge des cultural turn wurde auch in der alttestamentlichen Wissenschaft die Nahrungsaufnahme auf ihre symbolischen Aspekte, kulturellen und historischen Kontexte hin untersucht. Dabei konzentrierte sich die Forschung auf die Darstellung von "realen" Mahlzeiten in der erzählten Welt. Die im Kontext der apokalyptischen Tradition imaginierten künftigen Mähler in der Kommenden Welt wurden bislang nur sporadisch behandelt und weder zusammenfassend noch systematisch dargestellt. An diesem Forschungsdesiderat setzt die vorliegende Arbeit an. Methodisch knüpft sie an den sozialwissenschaftlichen Diskurs zu Ritualen an und adaptiert diesen auf biblische und außerbiblische Texte. Gezeigt wird, dass das Mahl in der Kommenden Welt eine, aber nicht die einzige literarische Möglichkeit war, die Zukunft zu imaginieren. Obwohl es vier prominente Hauptthemen gibt, erscheint die Idee vom imaginierten Mahl als eine Art Angebot, deren Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten von den antiken Autoren individuell angepasst wurden. Deutlich wird immer, dass imaginierte Mahlrituale Projektionsflächen sind, in denen alle Hoffnungen der unvollkommenen Gegenwart in genussvollem endzeitlichen Speisen erfüllt werden.

Dass die Lager nicht abgeschottet, sondern Teil der NS-Gesellschaft waren, verdeutlicht die Analyse der ökonomi-schen Beziehungen, der physischen Gewalt, der Konfliktpotentiale und Gewöhnungseffekte sowie ihrer gezielten Zurschaustellung für die Öffentlichkeit. Dabei bewegten sich die lokalen Akteure zwischen Zustimmung und Mit-machen, Distanzierung und Verweigerung. Die Studie hebt außerdem die Bedeutung des Lokalen für die erinnerungspolitischen Debatten nach 1945 hervor.

The Jewish-Christian Dialogue is one significant result of that shift in mindset. In Germany and Austria, Jewish-Christian discussion initiatives based on the Hebrew Bible - a common document of faith shared by both Judaism and Christianity - were established in the first decades of the post-war period. This monography concentrates on four such dialogue initiatives, and the genesis and development of these dialogue-based educational formats and their reception of the Bible are analysed. The qualitative study grants dialogue-participants ample space for their perceptions und experiences.

    Abstract: "Converts in the Dead Sea Scrolls examines the meaning of the term gēr in the Dead Sea Scrolls. While often interpreted as a resident alien, this study of the term as it is employed within scriptural rewriting in the Dead Sea Scrolls concludes that the gēr is a Gentile convert to Judaism. Contrasting the gēr in the Dead Sea Scrolls against scriptural predecessors, Carmen Palmer finds that a conversion is possible by means of mutable ethnicity. Furthermore, mutable features of ethnicity in the sectarian movement affiliated with the Dead Sea Scrolls include shared kinship, connection to land, and common culture in the practice of circumcision. The sectarian movement is not as closed toward Gentiles as has been commonly considered"--

    Abstract: In Style and Context of Old Greek Job , Marieke Dhont offers a new understanding of the linguistic and stylistic diversity in the Septuagint corpus. To this end, the author innovatively uses Polysystem Theory, which has been developed in the field of modern literary studies. After discussing the appropriateness of a systemic approach to understanding Jewish-Greek literature, the author reflects on the Jewishness of Greek-language texts. Dhont then presents a thorough literary analysis of the Old Greek version of the book of Job. On this basis, she explains the dynamics that produced the translation of Old Greek Job and its position within the development of a Jewish-Greek literary tradition

    Abstract: In The Authority of Law in the Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism , Vroom identifies a development in the authority of written law that took place in early Judaism. Ever since Assyriologists began to recognize that the Mesopotamian law collections did not function as law codes do today—as a source of binding obligation—scholars have grappled with the question of when the Pentateuchal legal corpora came to be treated as legally binding. Vroom draws from legal theory to provide a theoretical framework for understanding the nature of legal authority, and develops a methodology for identifying instances in which legal texts were treated as binding law by ancient interpreters. This method is applied to a selection of legal-interpretive texts: Ezra-Nehemiah, Temple Scroll, the Qumran rule texts, and the Samaritan Pentateuch

    Abstract: This research deals with R. Zadok's innovative writings. According to most scholars R. Zadok continues the doctrine of his rabbi R. Mordechai Yosef Leiner of Izbica and introduces existential fatalism: man has the freedom to act against the customary law, according to God's will which is revealed in his heart, even in his passions, which exceed the Halacha; however, man does not determine the will that is revealed in the root of his soul, but only uncovers it. Many expressions, in content and form, of this fatalism can be found in R. Zadok's writings; yet, he also introduces many remarks about human free choice and its creative power to establish and determine man's root and re-establish and influence the Divine worlds and this world. This research focuses on these passages whose centrality has been so far neglected by research. Hence, its renewed understanding of his doctrine. R.     Abstract: »Deutsche Staatschefs und deutsche Botschafter in Moskau kamen und gingen - aber Gustav Hilger blieb.« - Mit diesen Worten umschrieb Stalin jenen Mann, dessen Biografie im Mittelpunkt von Jörn Happels Studie steht. Als Experte, Diplomat und Dolmetscher war der gebürtige Moskauer von 1918 bis 1941 aus den deutsch-sowjetischen Beziehungen nicht wegzudenken. Er beriet zahlreiche Politiker und Wirtschaftsvertreter und übersetzte für Stalin und Molotov, Hitler und Ribbentrop. Ab 1941 arbeitete Hilger in Berlin als Ost-Experte gegen die Sowjetunion; diese Tätigkeit setzte er nach dem Krieg für die USA fort. Ab 1953 erklärte er im bundesdeutschen Auswärtigen Amt die Politik in Osteuropa. Folgt man der Perspektive Hilgers, kann die Position der Sowjetunion im 20. Jahrhundert in einer deutsch-sowjetisch-amerikanischen Verflechtungsgeschichte neu bestimmt werden. Seine Biografie eröffnet unerwartete Perspektiven auf die internationale Politik des 20.     Abstract: Der argentinische Schriftsteller Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986) gilt als ein Literat, der bereits in seinen Werken der 30er und 40er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts Strukturen geschaffen hat, die später die Postmoderne prägen sollten. Foucault hat sich auf ihn berufen. Borges Erzählungen sind insbesondere von intertextuellen Bezugnahmen und sich in Paradoxien verstrickende Narrative durchzogen. Die Folge ist ein dezentrierter sowie dialogisierender Text, der keine eindeutige Aussage hervorbringt, sondern in einer vielstimmigen und unabgeschlossenen Textauslegung zur Wirkung kommt. Die vorliegende Studie stellt zur Diskussion, ob ein wesentlicher Grund für Borges’ innovatives, die literarische Postmoderne prägendes Textkonzept darin gesehen werden kann, dass sich der argentinische Schriftsteller nachweislich mit jüdischer Schriftkultur auseinandergesetzt hat. Geht man davon aus, dass die in jüdischer Tradition kultivierte mehrschichtige Textdeutung zugleich einen permanenten, unendlichen Rezeptionsprozess zur Folge hat wird deutlich, dass diese Tradition nicht nur kompatibel zu Borges’ Literatur ist, sondern auch zahlreiche Reflexionen in der modernen Literatur und Literaturforschung angeregt hat.

    Abstract: In For Out of Babylonia Shall Come Torah and the Word of the Lord from Nehar Peqod , Barak S. Cohen reevaluates the evidence in Tannaitic and Amoraic literature of an independent “Babylonian Mishnah” which originated in the proto-talmudic period. The book focuses on an analysis of the most notable halakhic corpora that have been identified by scholars as originating in the Tannaitic period or at the outset of the amoraic. If indeed such an early corpus did exist, what are its characteristics and what, if any, connection does it have with the parallel Palestinian collections? Was this Babylonian Mishnah created in order to harmonize the Palestinian Mishnah with a corpus of rabbinic teachings already existent in Babylonia? Was this corpus one of the main contributors to the forced interpretations and resolutions found so frequently in the Bavli?

    Abstract: Mit 23 Jahren verließ die Jüdin Hilde Domin 1932 mit ihrem späteren Ehemann Deutschland. Nach einer langen Odyssee durch Europa und einem 12 Jahre währenden Exil in der Dominikanischen Republik kehrte sie 1954 in ihre Heimat zurück. In einer schweren Lebenskrise begann sie zu schreiben, ihr erster Gedichtband erschien 1959. In Deutschland wurde sie von fast allen Kritikern und Dichterkollegen euphorisch gefeiert. Das Lesepublikum war begeistert. Der vorliegende Band zeichnet die zeitgenössische Rezeption Hilde Domins nach und untersucht sowohl das lyrische Werk als auch ihre poetologischen Essays. Beide bilden insofern eine Einheit, als das künstlerische Werk Ausgangspunkt für die kunsttheoretischen Überlegungen ist. Seit Beginn der 70er Jahre wendete sich Hilde Domin mit Resolutionen, Aufrufen, kritischen Leserbriefen der gesellschaftlich/politischen Situation der Bundesrepublik zu, Gedichte schrieb sie kaum noch. Trotzdem hat ihre Lyrik bis heute nichts von ihrer Wirkung verloren. Worin diese besteht und was die lyrischen Texte noch so aktuell macht, wird ebenfalls in diesem Band verdeutlicht.

    Abstract: This biography - the first of its kind - is dedicated to the life and works of Vilém Flusser. Born as the son of Jewish parents in Prague in 1920, he flees from the Nazis, who murder his whole family in a concentration camp, via London to Brazil in 1939. In 1972 he returns to Europe, where he becomes famous in Germany as a "digital thinker"in the 1980s. His influence on philosophy, and particularly media science, are undisputed. Vilém Flusser's extraordinary and turbulent life, which ends in a fatal car crash in 1991, is also a portrait of the 20th Century with all its contradictions. Due to the wide thematic range of Vilém Flusser`s work, this biography is also interesting to readers of other subjects besides philosophy and media theory.

    Abstract: In Hebrews and the Temple Philip Church argues that the silence of Hebrews concerning the temple does not mean that the author is not interested in the temple. He writes to encourage his readers to abandon their preoccupation with it and to follow Jesus to their eschatological goal. Following extensive discussions of attitudes to the temple in the literature of Second Temple Judaism, Church turns to Hebrews and argues that the temple is presented there as a symbolic foreshadowing of the eschatological dwelling of God with his people. Was genau macht ihre Attraktion aus?Eine Antwort darauf gibt Nicole Maria Bauers religionswissenschaftliche Analyse des »Kabbalah Centre«, einer Ende der 1960er Jahre in den USA gegründeten neureligiösen Bewegung, die seit einigen Jahren auch in Deutschland vertreten ist und der sich Menschen aus unterschiedlichen religiösen Kontexten anschließen.Die transdisziplinäre Studie beleuchtet die Konstruktion religiöser Identität auf institutioneller und personaler Ebene und entwirft einen neuen Ansatz für deren Untersuchung. Dabei werden auch aktuelle Trends wie etwa die Frage nach »Religious Branding« aufgegriffen und mit neueren Ansätzen aus der Identitätsforschung verknüpft.

    Abstract: Jewish Love Magic: From Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages is the first monograph dedicated to the supernatural methods employed by Jews in order to generate love, grace or hate. Examining hundreds of manuscripts, often unpublished, Ortal-Paz Saar skillfully illuminates a major aspect of the Jewish magical tradition. The book explores rituals, spells and important motifs of Jewish love magic, repeatedly comparing them to the Graeco-Roman and Christian traditions. In addition to recipes and amulets in Hebrew, Aramaic and Judaeo-Arabic, primarily originating in the Cairo Genizah, also rabbinic sources and responsa are analysed, resulting in a comprehensive and fascinating picture

    Abstract: Der russisch-jüdische Dichter Ossip Mandelstam, 1891 in Warschau geboren, ist einer der bedeutendsten Lyriker des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sein tragisches Schicksal im Stalinismus steht exemplarisch für das Los der Intellektuellen und Künstler in den Diktaturen der Moderne.Der extrem sensible, eigensinnige, demonstrativ individualistische Mandelstam war zwar in der Sowjetunion bis hin zu Stalin selbst als herausragender Poet anerkannt. Letztlich aber wurde dem Dichter seine Unangepasstheit zum Verhängnis: Nach einem Epigramm auf Stalin in das Mahlwerk von Miliz und Geheimdienst geraten, wurde Mandelstam bestraft, verbannt, rehabilitiert, wieder verhaftet und am Ende in den sibirischen Gulag deportiert, wo er durch die Strapazen des Lagerlebens umkam. Pavel Nerler, wohl der beste Mandelstam-Kenner der Gegenwart, hat in langjährigen Recherchen aus den Archiven unbekanntes Material zusammengetragen und kann so die letzten Lebensjahre des Dichters in erschütternder Anschaulichkeit schildern: die Intrigen der Kollegen, aber auch die Versuche ihn in die Sowjetgesellschaft einzubinden, die Verhöre, die Widrigkeiten der Verbannung, die psychischen Zusammenbrüche und am Ende den Tod in Sibirien.

    Abstract: »Gott liebt die Juden«. Erst während des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils brachte die Kirche es über sich, diese Erklärung in ihre Verlautbarungen aufzunehmen. Zuvor hatte sie jahrtausendelang gelehrt, dass das Volk, dem die Kreuzigung Jesu zur Last gelegt wird, von Gott verflucht sei und bleibe. In den 1940er Jahren schwieg die Katholische Kirche überwiegend, als Juden von den Nationalsozialisten zu Millionen ermordet wurden. Wie kam es dazu, dass eine Institution mit der Aura der Unfehlbarkeit einen der revolutionärsten ideologischen Paradigmenwechsel der Neuzeit unternahm? Die Gründe für diesen radikalen Schnitt entspringen den Jahren kurz vor dem Holocaust, aus einem verzweifelten theologischen Kampf, den eine kleine Gruppe katholischer Konvertiten bestritt, um ihre neuentdeckte Glaubensgemeinschaft vor dem Einfluss der nationalsozialistischen Ideologien zu schützen. Insbesondere der ehemalige Jude Johannes Oesterreicher sowie der einstige Protestant Karl Thieme überwanden diesen besonders fraglichen Aspekt der katholischen Kirchengeschichte, indem sie in jahrelangem Engagement Debatten in akademischen Schriften anstießen, sich für die Volksbildung einsetzten und ihre Interessen auch im Vatikan selbst durchzusetzen versuchten. Doch ihr letztendlicher Erfolg war nicht die Folge immer neuer Aufrufe zu mehr Menschlichkeit, sondern der Neuentdeckung bis dahin vernachlässigter Teile der Heiligen Schrift. Der Band beleuchtet das erstaunliche Stillschweigen, welches die Kirche während des Holocausts bewahrte, und zeigt die uralten Lehren auf – laut derer die Juden erst vom Fluch Gottes erlöst würden, wenn sie sich Christus zuwendeten –, die zu der problematischen Haltung der Christen dem Judentum gegenüber führte

    Abstract: In Ontological Aspects of Early Jewish Anthropology , Tyson L. Putthoff explores early Jewish beliefs about how the human self reacts ontologically in God’s presence. Combining contemporary theory with sound exegesis, Putthoff demonstrates that early Jews widely considered the self to be intrinsically malleable, such that it mimics the ontological state of the space it inhabits. In divine space, they believed, the self therefore shares in the ontological state of God himself. The book is critical for students and scholars alike. In putting forth a new framework for conceptualising early Jewish anthropology, it challenges scholars to rethink not only what early Jews believed about the self but how we approach the subject in the first place

Peters finds a way to maintain linguistic integrity and yet simplify cognitive linguistic methods to provide non-specialists an access point. By employing a cognitive approach one can coordinate the world of the biblical text with the world of its surroundings. The language of cooking affords such a possibility - Peters evaluates not only the words or lexemes related to cooking in the Hebrew Bible, but also the world of cooking as excavated by archaeology"--

    Abstract: Im neunten Band der Reihe geht Ansgar Martins kabbalistischen Spuren in der Philosophie Theodor W. Adornos (1903–1969) nach. Der Frankfurter Gesellschaftskritiker griff im Rahmen seines radikalen materialistischen Projekts gleichwohl auch auf ‚theologische‘ Deutungsfiguren zurück. Vermittelt durch den gemeinsamen Freund Walter Benjamin (1892–1940) stieß Adorno dabei auf das Werk des Kabbala-Forschers Gershom Scholem (1897–1982). Zwischen Frankfurt und Jerusalem entwickelte sich eine lebenslange Korrespondenz. Für Adorno erscheint vor dem Hintergrund lückenloser kapitalistischer Vergesellschaftung jede religiöse Sinngebung in der Moderne als unmöglich. Der Tradition der jüdischen Mystik schreibt er hingegen eine innere Affinität zu dieser hoffnungslosen Logik des ‚Verfalls‘ zu. Sie scheint ihm zur unumgänglichen Säkularisierung religiöser Gehalte aufzufordern. Adornos kabbalistische Marginalien beziehen einen breiten Horizont jüdisch-messianischer Ideen ein. Er verleugnet dabei nie, dass es ihm um eine sehr diesseite Verwirklichung geoffenbarter Heilsversprechen zu tun ist: Transzendenz sei als erfüllte Immanenz, als verwirklichte Utopie zu denken. In diesem Anliegen sieht Adorno selbst jedoch gerade seine Übereinstimmung mit der Kabbala. Adornos kabbalistische Motive, die auf Scholems Forschungen zurückgehen, werden hier ausführlich an seinen Schriften und Vorlesungen untersucht. In seinem Verständnis der philosophischen Tradition sowie im Modell der Metaphysischen Erfahrung suchte er etwa explizit Anschluss an Deutungen der Kabbala: Das unerreichbare Urbild der Philosophie sei die Interpretation der geoffenbarten Schrift. Wie säkularisierte heilige Texte wurden Werke von Beethoven, Goethe, Kafka oder Schönberg so zum Anlass für ‚mystische‘ Interpretationen. Deren detaillierte Untersuchung erlaubt, das viel beschworene jüdische Erbe von Adornos Philosophie zu konkretisieren und bedenkenswerte Einzelheiten von der Negativen Dialektik zur Ästhetik in den Blick zu nehmen.

    Abstract: "In The Danielic Discourse on Empire in Second Temple Literature, Alexandria Frisch asks: how did Jews in the Second Temple period understand the phenomenon of foreign empire? In answering this question, a remarkable trend reveals itself--the book of Daniel, which situates its narrative in an imperial context and apocalyptically envisions empires, was overwhelmingly used by Jewish writers when they wanted to say something about empires. This study examines Daniel, as well as antecedents to and interpretations of Daniel, in order to identify the diachronic changes in perceptions of empire during this period. Oftentimes, this Danielic discourse directly reacted to imperial ideologies, either copying, subverting, or adapting those ideologies. Throughout this study, postcolonial criticism, therefore, provides a hermeneutical lens through which to ask a second question: in an imperial context, is the Jewish conception of empire actually Jewish?"--

    Abstract: In Exegeting the Jews: The Early Reception of the Johannine \'Jews\' , Michael G. Azar analyzes the rhetorical function of the Gospel of John’s \'Jews\' in the earliest surviving full-length expositions of John in Greek: Origen’s Commentary on John (3rd century), John Chrysostom’s Homilies on John (4th century), and Cyril of Alexandria’s Commentary on John (5th century). While scholarship often has portrayed the reception history ( Wirkungsgeschichte ) of the Gospel’s “Jews” as simply and uniformly anti-Jewish or antisemitic, Azar demonstrates that these three writers primarily read John’s narrative typologically, employing the situation and characters in the Gospel not against contemporary Jews with whom they regularly interacted, but as types of each patristic writer’s own intra-Christian struggle and opponents

    Abstract: In Nuptial Symbolism in Second Temple Writings, the New Testament and Rabbinic Literature , André Villeneuve examines the ancient Jewish concept of the covenant between God and Israel, portrayed as a marriage dynamically moving through salvation history. This nuptial covenant was established in Eden but damaged by sin; it was restored at the Sinai theophany, perpetuated in the Temple liturgy, and expected to reach its final consummation at the end of days. The authors of the New Testament adopted the same key moments of salvation history to describe the spousal relationship between Christ and the Church. In their typological treatment of these motifs, they established an exegetical framework that would anticipate the four senses of Scripture later adopted by patristic and medieval commentators

    Abstract: In Turning Proverbs towards Torah , Elisa Uusimäki offers the first monograph on the early Jewish wisdom text 4Q525 from Qumran. Following the reconstruction of the fragmentary manuscript, Uusimäki analyses the text with a focus on the reception and renewal of the Proverbs tradition and the ways in which 4Q525 illustrates aspects of Jewish pedagogy in the late Second Temple period. She argues that the author was inspired by Proverbs 1-9 but sought to demonstrate that true wisdom is found in the concept of torah. He also weaved dualistic elements and eschatological ideas into the wisdom frame. The author's intention, Uusimäki argues, is to form the audience spiritually, encouraging it to trust in divine protection and blessings that are bestowed upon the pious

    Abstract: This research concentrates on the investigation of the Responsa literature and the examination of attitudes of Jewish religious decisors towards artificial insemination (AI), as well as other reproductive technologies such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF), surrogacy and egg donation. The study attempts to elucidate the formation of Halacha on this question according to the Responsa literature starting from the Rishonim (the early authorities) period (11th till 15th centuries) and up to the Acharonim (the later authorities) period (from the 16th century and onwards), and concentrating primarily on the modern era and last century. The aim of this research is to examine the process of reasoning and decision making of religious authorities, dealing with the penetration of technological and scientific advancements into a closed and conservative society. Our analysis shows how rabbis are facing the conflict between medical and social necessity to access advanced medical treatments and fear of social transitions and religious implications, caused by such technologies. In addition to analysis of the Orthodox Responsa, this study surveys also the opinion of rabbis in Reform and Conservative Judaism.
    Abstract: מצוות הפריון הינה אחת מן המצוות החשובות ביהדות ומגדירה במובנים רבים את מהות קיומו של האדם היהודי הדתי. זוגות דתיים אשר סובלים מבעיית פריון נקרעים לא פעם בין מחוייבותם הדתית והלחץ החברתי בקהילתם לבין אי יכולתם להביא ילדים לעולם בדרך טבעית. החל מאמצע המאה ה 20- הפכו טכנולוגיות פריון רפואיות לנגישות לציבור הרחב בישראל ובעולם והובילו למהפכה חברתית אשר אפשרה לזוגות חשוכי ילדים להגשים את חלומם בפעם הראשונה ולהפוך להורים. פריצת דרך רפואית זו לא נעלמה מעיני הציבור הדתי על זרמיו השונים וגרמה לטלטלה בתפיסת עולמם של מנהיגיהם, אשר נדרשו לתת מענה הלכתי הולם המאזן בין רווחת קהילותיהם לבין שמירה על ערכי ומצוות הדת היהודית. על רקע תמורות אלו התפתח שיח הלכתי ואקדמי חשוב ומעניין באשר למקומה של טכנולוגיה מודרנית בחברה המתנהלת על פי קודים מסורתיים. עם זאת, הדיאלוג החי המתקיים בין מנהיגי היהדות לבין קהילותיהם, אשר מתועד כאוסף שאלות ותשובות (שו"ת) לבעיות הלכתיות אקטואליות בתחום הפריון, לא נחקר דיו. עבודתנו עוסקת במחקר ספרות השו"ת ובגישת פוסקי ההלכה להסתייעות בטכנולוגיית ההזרעה המלאכותית ובטיפולי פוריות חדשניים נוספים שהתפתחו בעקבותיה כגון הפריה חוץ גופית, פונדקאות ותרומת ביציות. העבודה סוקרת את התגבשות ועיצוב ההלכה בשאלה זו, כפי שעולה מספרות השו"ת החל מתקופת הראשונים (המאות ה 11- עד ה- 16 ) ועד לפוסקים מתקופת האחרונים (המאה ה- 16 ואילך), ומתמקדת בעיקר בתקופה המודרנית של המאה האחרונה. במרכז העבודה יעמדו מעמדם ההלכתי של האם והוולד בעקבות שימוש בהזרעה והפריה מלאכותית וכן השלכותיהן ההלכתיות של השימוש הרפואי בזרע. תרומתו של מחקר זה הינה בהצגת וניתוח התמודדות הפוסקים עם העימות הערכי וההלכתי שמעוררות תמורות במבנה המשפחה ובדפוסי הורות מסורתיים כתוצאה משימוש הולך וגובר בטכנולוגיות פריון מתקדמות בחברה המודרנית. יתר על כן, מחקר זה מרחיב את הדיון ההלכתי אל מעבר לעמדות הפוסקים ביהדות האורתודוקסית, הנצמדים לעקרונות ההלכה ההיסטורית, ומציג לראשונה אף את קשת הדעות של רבנים המשתייכים לזרמי היהדות המתקדמת והקונסרבטיבית, הדוגלים בפיתוח ההלכה והתאמתה למציאות החיים המשתנה. כך, מעניקה עבודת מחקר זו תמונה שלמה ומקיפה יותר באשר להתמודדות הרבנים עם שאלת ההזרעה המלאכותית ומציגה את רב גוניותה של ההלכה כפי שמשתקפת בזרמי היהדות השונים בישראל ובתפוצות.

    Abstract: Das Judentum ist als pädagogisch wirkender Kulturzusammenhang anzusehen, der global und interkulturell zu betrachten ist. In drei Etappen – von der Binnenperspektive zu transkulturellen Aneignungen – stellt der Band die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang von Bildung und Kultur neu. Im ersten Teil werden pädagogische Strukturen des kulturell institutionalisierten Judentums aus einer Binnenperspektive historisch begründet. Dabei geraten ihre Einflüsse von Moderne und Aufklärung ebenso in den Blick wie ihre Ursprünge in der Thorah. Der zweite Teil widmet sich verschiedenen Denkansätzen von Pädagogen jüdischer Herkunft und deren zentraler Rolle für die allgemeine, über eine spezifisch jüdische Kultur hinausweisende pädagogische Kultur.     Abstract: In The Fabric of Religious Life in Medieval Ashkenaz , Jeffrey R. Woolf presents the first integrated presentation of the ideals and beliefs that comprised the self-image and worldview of Ashkenazic Jews in the Central and High Middle Ages (900-1300). Through careful examination of a wide range of sources (legal, customal, liturgical, artistic), Woolf shows how religious practice played a dual role in creating and sustaining Jewish life in a hostile environment. They instilled these values, and recast religious traditions to reflect them. The author demonstrates how hitherto underappreciated ideals such as Purity, Sanctity, and a palpable sense of Divine In-Dwelling played a central role in Ashkenazic religiousity and merged to form the texture, or the \'Sacred Canopy,\' of their lives

    Abstract: This study examines the relationship between time and history in Second Temple literature. Numerous sources from that period express a belief that Jewish history began with an act of covenant formation and proceeded in linear fashion until the exile, an unprecedented event which severed the present from the past. The authors of Ben Sira, Jubilees , the Animal Apocalypse , and 4 Ezra responded to this theological challenge by claiming instead that Jewish history began at creation. Between creation and redemption, history unfolds as a series of static, repeating patterns that simultaneously account for the disappointments of the Second Temple period and confirm the eternal nature of the covenant. As iterations of timeless, cyclical patterns, the difficult post-exilic present and the glorious redemption of the future emerge as familiar, unremarkable, and inevitable historical developments

    Abstract: Time and eternity are concepts that have occupied an important place within Jewish mystical thought. This present volume gives pride of place to these concepts, and is one of the first works to bring together diverse voices on the subject. It offers a multivalent picture of the topic of time and eternity, not only by including contributions from an array of academics who are leaders in their fields, but by proposing six diverse approaches to time and eternity in Jewish mysticism: the theoretical approach to temporality, philosophical definitions, the idea of time and pre-existence, the idea of historical time, the idea of experiential time, and finally, the idea of eternity beyond time. This multivocal treatment of Jewish mysticism and time as based on variant academic approaches is novel, and it should lay the groundwork for further discussion and exploration
