Kurzfassung:
States that Canada took in fewer refugees than any other Western democracy during the 1930s. Blames the director of the Immigration Branch of the Department of Mines and Resources, Frederick Charles Blair, who was an antisemite and was entrusted with almost all the decisions concerning entry into Canada. The Prime Minister, Mackenzie King, believed that admitting refugees would destroy Canada, worsen relations between the federal and provincial governments, and encourage Quebec separatism. Canada was permeated with racism, xenophobia, and antisemitism. In Quebec, harassment of Jews, quotas, and restrictions were common. Quotes a report by Claris Edwin Silcox, a clergyman and leader of the tiny pro-refugee movement, on the reasons for opposition to refugees, among them Nazi propaganda, nativism, and religious antisemitism.
