Abstract: Randolph L. Braham, the authority on the Holocaust in Hungary, spoke out forcefully against the historical revisionism of the Fidesz government in Hungary. Historians and publicists close to that leadership equate the occupation of Hungary by its World War II German ally with its occupation by the Red Army and subsequent decades of Soviet domination. Implying that the Hungarian people suffered at the hands of the Germans just as did the Jews, these writers set forth a nationalist narrative that casts Hungary as a victimized “Christian” nation. Braham submitted this synthetic article shortly before he died in 2018. An introduction by Paul Hanebrink sets Braham’s work in its biographical, political, and historical contexts.

Abstract: The anti-Jewish policies of Germany's allies - Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia, as well as the fates of their Jews during World War II, varied depending on the country's historical traditions, domestic and foreign interests, level of dependence on the Third Reich, and, most of all, on their leaders' changing perceptions of Germany's military fortunes as the war progressed. The first victims of the Holocaust in the German-allied states were Jews in the German zone of occupation in Croatia; and the quickest genocidal operation was carried out in mid-1944 in Hungary, which had only recently been occupied by German forces. On the other hand, after the defeat at Stalingrad, Romania, Slovakia, and Bulgaria revised their anti-Jewish policies and came to regard their Jews as a valuable asset and a bargaining chip in an eventual postwar peace conference. The survival of Jews in Bulgaria and Finland is testimony to the basic decency of the Christian population of these countries.

Abstract: The historiography relating to the antecedents and the processes of destruction of Hungarian Jewry during the period of the Hungarian-Nazi alliance is rich; the question as to why it was possible to destroy the large and relatively intact Jewish community on the eve of the Allied victory has not yet been adequately answered and remains a historical puzzle. Discusses four factors that conditioned the destruction and alleviated its implementation for the Nazis and their Hungarian accomplices. One of them was the reliance of the Hungarian-Jewish leadership on the conservative Hungarian elites, brought up by almost a century of good Hungarian-Jewish relations. This reliance blinded the Jewish leaders regarding the rise of antisemitism in the country from the late 19th century and the governments' anti-Jewish policies in 1920 and from 1938 on. Another factor was the calculations of Hungary's rulers, who hoped that their joining Nazi Germany in its Final Solution (and in its war efforts) would safeguard the territorial acquisitions made by Hungary in 1938-41. The main role was played by the German occupiers' resolution to implement the Final Solution in Hungary, and Horthy's resignation when copnfronted with this resolution. Another crucial factor was a misinterpretation by Hungarian Jewish leaders of the Slovakian Jewish leaders' experience in negotiations with the SS: trying to emulate their Slovakian brethren, the Hungarian Jews were enticed into fruitless bargaining with the Nazis in 1944.
