Abstract:
Summarizes conclusions reached in the author's "Ostjuden in Deutschland, 1918-1933" (1986). Discusses the absorption of East European Jewish immigrants and the attitudes of the national and Prussian state governments and of the German Jewish community. Right-wing parties demanded a stop to their immigration, and expulsion of those already in Germany; liberal and left-wing parties, although they too were often tinged with antisemitism, defended equal rights for all. Notes that the states severely restricted all immigration because of the economic crisis.
