Abstract:
In their traditional status as a religious and cultural minority, the Jews of Germany were aliens - they enjoyed state protection but were excluded from the civic body and subjected to discriminatory "Jews' regulations". Emancipation debates began in Berlin in 1770. The emancipation achieved during the Napoleonic period was rendered ineffective after 1815. While the emancipation granted in 1848 was withdrawn in 1851, the eventual integration of the Jews in cultural and political life was part of a general liberalization process achieved in most German states in the 1860s.
